Make The You Up Worth It

Eleven pm is not a personality.

It arrives like it always does. Short. Casual. A little bit proud of itself. You up. Two words that have ended more evenings than bad wine and started more ones than decent conversation. No plan. No sentence with a verb in it. Just a man poking the dark with his thumb to see if anyone still has the lights on.

The joke writes itself. He has had all day to find language and he chose the same two words his dad probably used in 2004, except then it was a Nokia and a slightly more honest version of the same request. Come over. Be convenient. Be warm. Be the thing that turns a restless night into a finished one.

Humour first, because the text is funny. It is also a test dressed as laziness.

A you up is not automatically an insult. Late wanting is allowed. Bodies do not keep office hours. The problem is the blankness of it. He has not told you what he is offering. He has not asked what you want. He has sent a trapdoor and waited to see if you fall through it wearing nice underwear.

So ask him what he wants to do.

Not as a speech. Not as a TED Talk about emotional labour. One line. What are you actually after. Sex. Company. A film and then sex. A quick one and a taxi. If he cannot answer that without getting sulky, he was not inviting you into a night. He was inviting you into a slot.

Men go peculiar when you ask them to name the thing they have already named with their timing. Eleven pm is the confession. The follow up question just makes them say it in English. Some will rise to it and get specific, which is immediately more attractive than mystery. Some will dodge, joke, send a smirking emoji, and hope you do the translating for them. That second group is why the walk of honour exists.

If the answer is just come over, try one condition.

One. Not a contract. Not a mood board. One thing that makes the night yours as well as his.

Lights, time, or a condom plan.

Lights matter more than people pretend. Pitch black is romantic in theory and sloppy in practice. You cannot see his face. You cannot see whether he is paying attention. You cannot see whether the room is a scene or a storage unit with a bed in it. A lamp on changes the temperature of the whole arrangement. It says this is happening to two people, not to a body in the dark that he can edit later in his head.

Time is the unsexy condition that saves the morning. I can stay until one. I am leaving after. I need to be on the last train. It sounds cold until you have woken up in a stranger’s flat with a dead phone and the peculiar shame of having given the whole night away because nobody mentioned a clock. A time limit does not kill desire. It gives desire a shape. Men who only wanted a hole in the schedule will flinch at a leaving time. Men who actually want you in the room will work with it.

The condom plan should not even be a negotiation, and yet here we are, still treating basic safety like a vibe that might ruin the atmosphere. Put it in the message while you still have clothes on and a brain that is not negotiating with itself. Have you got condoms. I am bringing some. If that ends the conversation, the conversation ended in your favour. There is nothing erotic about a man who finds responsibility unsexy. There is something very revealing about one who does.

This is the serious bit, and it does not need dressing up.

A late text from an app is still a stranger situation even if you have been trading photos for a week. You know his jawline. You do not know his habits. Tell someone where you are going. Take your own way home. Keep enough battery to leave without borrowing his charger like a hostage. Desire is not a character reference. Chemistry in the chat is not proof he will listen when you say slower, stop, not that.

You can want him and still treat the night like it has logistics. Those two things are not opposites. The women who get burned on you ups are rarely the ones who wanted sex. They are the ones who confused being wanted with being considered.

Now the funnier truth. A lot of you ups are bad sex wearing a leather jacket.

He has been half hard since the pub and fully lazy since the sofa. He has watched enough of other people’s bodies that he thinks arrival is the same thing as effort. He wants the shortest route from the doorway to finishing. Foreplay is whatever happened in the messages. Aftercare is a glass of water if you are lucky and the back of his shoulder if you are not.

That is why the condition matters. It is not about being difficult. It is about refusing to be the easy ending to his day.

Try asking for one thing you actually like before you travel. Not a menu. One. Mouth first. Slow at the start. Keep the lamp on. If he can hold a single request in his head on a Tuesday at midnight, he might be worth the taxi. If he treats it like you have asked him to assemble furniture, stay home and keep your own hands. They already know the plot.

There is a particular optimism that opens the app again after a dud you up. The brain does a little edit. Next time will be filthier. Next time he will talk. Next time the silence after he comes will turn into a person. It rarely does, not with the ones who could only manage two words to get you there. The effort they skip in the text is the effort they skip in the room. The medium is the message, and the message is I would like you to do the rest.

That does not mean every late night is cheap.

Some of the best sex of a careless year starts after eleven because both people are already in their bodies. The performance of the evening is over. Nobody is pretending this is leading to a farmers market. You can be direct. You can be a bit greedy. You can laugh when the condom wrapper fights back and it does not have to become a scene. There is a heat in honesty that dinner dates spend three hours trying to manufacture.

The difference is mutual. He wants you there, not just an ending. He can say sex without coughing. He can hear a condition without acting wounded. He puts a glass of water near the bed like a man who has met a body before. He does not vanish into monk mode the second he finishes, or if he goes quiet he still keeps a hand on you, which is the only kind of quiet that does not feel like a firing.

You can feel that in the messages if you stop being flattered long enough to read them.

You up from someone who has already been specific with you is an invitation. You up from someone who has only ever been thirsty is a vacancy. Same two words. Different job advert.

Say no more often than the itch suggests.

No is a complete night. No is leftover takeaway and a show you have already seen and the private luxury of not putting a bra back on for a man who could not stretch to a full sentence. The culture around these texts pretends that declining is prude or punishing. It is neither. It is taste. High drive does not mean always available. It means you know the difference between hunger and being used as catering.

When you do go, go as yourself.

Do not arrive already performing the girl who is cool about everything. That girl gets rushed, under-kissed, and thanked with a grunt. Be the person who likes sex and would like it to be good. Ask him to slow down when he starts doing clip speed. Put his hand where it is useful. If the chat was filthy, bring one line from it into the room and see whether he can live up to his own thumbs. Plenty of them write like they have a reputation and then kiss like they have a bus to catch.

Leave when you said you would.

The extra hour is how you wake up negotiating a version of the night you did not agree to. Breakfast. Soft talk. The sudden boyfriend audition from a man who wanted a body at eleven and companionship at eight in the morning. Or the opposite, which is worse: you lingering in a bed that has already mentally checked you out. Get your clothes. Get your train. Let the night be a night. Aftermath does not have to mean confusion. It can mean you got what you came for and you still own the morning.

If it was good, you will know because the you up will not be the whole story next time. He will try a bit harder in the language. He will remember the condition and meet it without being asked twice. That is the only promotion these men should get. Better words. Better hands. Not another blank text and the assumption that last Tuesday bought him a key.

If it was not good, do not coach him in the doorway. Do not send the gentle feedback paragraph at 1:40 am like a disappointed manager. Unmatch is cleaner than a training scheme. The app will refill. That is the one promise it has never broken.

The peculiar bit, the bit that keeps the whole machine running, is how small the ask is and how large it feels.

You up.

Two words. A whole weather system.

Make it worth the clothes, the taxi, the risk, the sleep you will not get. Ask what he wants. Add one condition. Lights on, time set, condom sorted. If that is too much admin for him, he was never offering a night. He was offering a gap in his own boredom and hoping you would be polite enough to fill it.

You do not have to be polite with your body. You can be funny about the text and serious about the door. Both can sit in the same evening. That is the whole trick. Laugh at the laziness. Do not sleep in it.
