  • He Needs It To Feel Close

He will not say he missed anyone.

He will, however, appear in a doorway at half ten with that look. The one that pretends it is casual. The one that has already decided the evening has a destination. Jacket still on. Voice a bit lower than it was in the group chat. Hands already doing the talking his mouth refuses to.

That is the whole trick, really. Sex as the translator. The act doing the job of a sentence he will not risk out loud.

It is almost impressive, if you squint. He can be inside someone and still not manage I like you. He can come and call it closeness. He can go quiet afterwards and believe the quiet is intimate, not empty. A whole emotional life stuffed into twenty minutes and a bit of breath on a neck. Then he wonders why the room feels unfinished.

Here is the confusing bit. He is not always cold. That would be easier. Cold is honest. This type is warm in the specific places that do not require language. Mouth, hands, the way he pulls a person in like the body has already agreed to a conversation the brain is still dodging. Tender when it is dark. Capable of being properly filthy and oddly gentle in the same stretch of minutes. Then morning arrives and he is a locked cabinet again. Asks if there is coffee. Does not ask how anyone slept. The closeness clocked off with the orgasm.

It would be funny if it did not keep working on people. Because it does work, a bit. Bodies are not stupid. Skin against skin still does something. A hand at the back of a head still lands. Being wanted in that blunt, physical way can feel like being chosen, even when the words never turn up to confirm it. That is the trap. The body says yes. The morning says, hang on.

He skips the talking that would make the act land. That is the line. Not that he will not talk at all. He will talk. About work. About a mate who is being an idiot. About a film. He will talk right up to the edge of the useful stuff and then reach for a zip instead. As if the useful stuff is dangerous and the zip is safe. Backwards, that. The zip is the bit that actually leaves a person open. The sentence is just air.

Watch him try to say something real and you can see the panic behind the eyes. Not big panic. Small. The kind that makes a man suddenly very interested in someone’s mouth so he does not have to use his own for anything risky. Kissing as a diversion. Sex as a cover band for feelings he will not put on the main stage.

And it is sexy, that is the annoying part. Of course it is. A man who wants someone badly enough to skip the speech can feel like heat. No preamble. No committee meeting about what it means. Just the weight of him and the knowledge that this is the only language he trusts. There is a charge in that. Always has been. The problem is what he thinks the charge is paying for.

He thinks the orgasm is the paragraph. He thinks if it was good, the closeness has been delivered, signed, filed. He does not understand that for a lot of people the good bit needs a place to sit afterwards. A stupid comment. A hand that stays. The unglamorous proof that he is still in the room as a person, not just as a pulse. Without that, the sex can be excellent and still feel like it happened in a lift that opened on the wrong floor.

The after is where he gives himself away. Some of them go soft and sweet and ruin the theory. Those ones exist. This one goes quiet like he has completed a task. Not cruel. Just finished. Scrolls. Stretches. Makes a joke that is a little too light for the thing that just happened. The body is still warm and he is already halfway back to being a flatmate of his own feelings.

Ask him what he meant by it and he looks vaguely betrayed. Meant by what. It was sex. It was nice. Why does it have to be a press conference. Which would be a fair point if he had not just used the sex to say the thing he will not say. You cannot employ an interpreter and then deny there was a message.

This is why they are such confusing creatures. He can want someone in a way that is almost hungry, almost honest, and still treat the honesty like a stain. He can need to be close so badly it comes out as urgency, then flinch when closeness asks to stay for breakfast. He will chase the feeling and then act surprised that the feeling has a person attached.

There is a version of this that is almost sweet, which makes it worse. He was probably not raised to say I feel small today. He was raised to be fine. Fine does not get to ask for a hand on the chest and a bit of quiet that is not sex. Fine gets to get hard and call that a personality. So the body becomes the only approved channel. Want becomes thrust. Care becomes how carefully he takes someone’s clothes off. Love, if that word is even in the building, becomes how he looks at a mouth like it might save him.

It is not that he does not feel it. That is the old lazy story and it is mostly rubbish. A lot of them feel it so much they have to smuggle it in through the bedroom because the front door is alarmed. The act is not empty. It is overcrowded. Too many unsaid things riding in on one physical moment. No wonder it sometimes feels rushed. He is trying to move a whole sofa through a cat flap.

The talking he skips is not a thesis. Nobody needs a PowerPoint on attachment styles at midnight. It is the small stuff. I kept thinking about you on the way over. I like how you do that. Stay a bit. That was more than just getting off for me. Tiny sentences. Cheap. Effective. He treats them like they would cheapen the heat, when they are the thing that stops the heat from evaporating the second he pulls out.

Without them, sex becomes a very pretty shrug.

There is also the practical comedy of it. He wants to feel close, so he goes straight for the part that requires the least vocabulary and the most assumption. Then he is faintly wounded if the other person is not telepathic. He did the intimacy. Why is there still a gap. Because he performed closeness and did not build it. Different jobs. One is a scene. The other is a habit.

A person can be on their back, properly into it, making those sounds that are not for show, and still notice the gap. That is the sexy-and-sad overlap he never accounts for. Pleasure does not cancel the question. Sometimes it sharpens it. The better it is, the louder the silence afterwards. If this is how he says it, what exactly is he saying.

Some nights it is just sex and that is fine. Brilliant, even. Not every shag needs a subplot. The issue is when he only knows one setting. When every bit of need gets poured into the same mould. Horny and lonely come out wearing the same face. Then he leaves someone to sort the recycling of his feelings while he has a shower.

He is good at the physical sentence, a lot of the time. That should be said. Hands that pay attention. A mouth that is not in a hurry for once. The particular focus of a man who is safer doing than declaring. It can be filthy in a way that feels like praise. Looked at like that, the whole thing is a compliment he is too shy to put in English. Looked at in the morning light, it is also a bit of a cop out.

The loop is stupid and very human. He cannot feel close until it happens. The other person cannot let it land until there is some sign he will still be there when the sweat dries. So he pushes for the act to create the feeling, and the missing words stop the feeling from sticking. Both of them walk away slightly mis-translated.

He will swear he is not bad at talking. He talks all day. Emails. Banter. A whole personality built out of being easy. Easy is not the same as open. Easy is the joke. Open is the bit after the joke where he admits the reason he came round was not just the obvious. That second bit is where a lot of them fall down the stairs.

There is a tell, if anyone is collecting them. He gets more intense when the week has been bad. Not more verbal. More physical. A harder kiss. A tighter hold. Sex as mood regulation. Sex as I had a shit day and I do not have another way to put my body next to someone without making it weird. It is not nothing. It is just a blunt instrument. Sometimes a blunt instrument still feels good. Sometimes it leaves a bruise that is not quite on the skin.

The hilarious part, and it is hilarious once the sting fades, is how proud he can be of the silence. As if not needing to say it makes it purer. More masculine. More real. No. It makes it unfinished. A film that cuts before the last scene and calls the cut artistic. Some of us like credits. Some of us like to know the actor is still employed.

He treats sex like it can carry the whole relationship on its back. Sex is strong. It is not that strong. It cannot do the job of a text that says get home safe. It cannot replace the unsexy check-in. It cannot be the only proof that someone is not just a convenient warmth. When it is asked to be all of that, it starts to feel heavy. Even when it is hot. Especially when it is hot.

Because the heat is not the problem. The heat is often excellent. That is why this type keeps getting away with it. If he was bad in bed and mute, the mystery would solve itself. He is often good enough that the mute feels like a style choice rather than a limitation. Style choice. Limitation. Same coat, different lining.

A useful man, in the end, can do both. Can want someone in that low, specific way and still find a sentence that does not kill the mood. Can let the act be filthy and let the talk be plain. Can need closeness and not make one body responsible for an entire inner life. That man exists. He is just not the one standing in the doorway pretending the look is enough.

This one needs the act to feel close and then uses the act as evidence that closeness has occurred. Circular. Neat. Wrong. Closeness is what is left when nobody is performing. The bit where he could say something small and true and instead reaches for a phone. The bit where a person is still half undressed and already doing the maths on what any of it meant.

He wants the feeling. He just wants it without the risk of being understood.

That is the whole animal. Hungry. Shy. Convinced that a good shag is a paragraph with a full stop. It is not. It is a clause. The sentence still needs the rest of the words. Until he finds them, he will keep translating himself through skin and wondering why the other person keeps asking what he meant.

He meant it. That is the joke. He just said it in a language that disappears when the lights come on.

  • Why He’s Soft Then Defensive

It happens in the least cinematic second of the night. Everything is going fine. Better than fine. Mouths, hands, that warm stupid rush where the brain clocks off and the body takes the meeting. Then the plot twist. He dips. Not dramatically. Not with a trumpet. Just a quiet retreat, like the guest of honour has remembered another appointment.

And then, immediately, the press conference.

It was the room. Too warm. Too cold. The lighting. That one glass of wine, except it was four and it was two hours ago. Work. His boss. His knee. The universe, basically, lining up to sabotage a perfectly good Friday. Never, under any circumstances, the simple fact that bodies are unreliable little traitors and sometimes they just change their mind.

The softness is not the crime. The press conference is.

There is something almost impressive about the speed of it. One minute he is all heat and certainty, the next he is a man giving evidence. He needs a cause. A culprit. A narrative that does not include the words I got nervous or I got tired or I have been gripping myself like a stress ball since I was fifteen and now live sensation is a bit of a shock. No. It has to be external. The duvet was too heavy. Someone looked at him wrong in 2019 and the trauma chose this exact moment to surface.

It would be funnier if it were not so consistent.

The body does a normal body thing and the ego files a formal complaint. That is the whole article, really. The rest is colour.

Because here is the part that never gets said cleanly. Losing hardness mid-way is ordinary. It is so ordinary it should have its own loyalty card. Alcohol does it. Overthinking does it. Trying too hard does it. Coming close then trying to hold it then panicking does it. A stray thought about emails does it. A compliment that lands too well and suddenly he is performing instead of feeling, and performance is a terrible way to keep blood where you want it. Porn does a number on it too, the long sessions, the death grip, the idea that arousal is a switch and not a weather system. None of that is a moral failing. It is plumbing plus pride.

    Pride is the loud one.

Watch the face when it happens. There is a flicker of surprise, then calculation, then the little tightening around the mouth that says this cannot be allowed to exist as a neutral event. It has to mean something. If it means something, it can be argued with. If it can be argued with, he is still in charge of the story. That is the defensive bit. Not the softness. The scramble to stay the author of the night.

Some of them joke. That is the better version. A groan, a laugh, a forehead on a shoulder, give me a minute. Human. Recoverable. Sometimes even hotter, because the performance drops and there is an actual person in the bed instead of a highlight reel. Others go quiet in a way that sucks the air out. Others get sharp. Others start problem-solving like the fire brigade has been called. Hands everywhere, rushing, trying to force the plot back on track, which is about as useful as shouting at a kettle.

Forcing it is how you turn a dip into a saga.

The sexy version of this moment is not technical. It is tone. Someone who can stay in the room when his body clocks off for a tea break. Keep kissing. Keep talking like a person. Let the heat sit there without demanding a verdict. There is a particular kind of confidence that looks like not making it a referendum on masculinity. Rare as hen’s teeth, that one. When it shows up it is properly attractive. When it does not, the whole thing gets weirdly official, like sex has been adjourned pending investigation.

And the excuses. God, the excuses.

The room is a favourite because the room cannot answer back. Stress is another classic, broad enough to cover anything from a genuine rotten week to the fact he has been watching too much of other people’s sex and now his nervous system expects a soundtrack and three camera angles. Then there is the implied one, the worst one, the one that slithers in without being said. Something about the other body in the bed. Not hot enough. Not doing it right. Too much pressure. As if desire is a customer service job and someone failed the mystery shop.

That last one is where the defensiveness stops being funny and starts being cheap.

A body changing its mind is not a review. It is not a rating. It is not a verdict on anyone’s mouth or hips or the way the evening started. It is blood and nerves and timing. Treating it like a performance review is how you make the next ten minutes colder than they needed to be. The irony, of course, is that the panic is often what keeps it from coming back. Nothing kills a return ticket like a man furiously trying to prove he is still the main character.

There is also the aftercare of the ego, which is a whole separate industry. The checking. Did that ruin it. Are you annoyed. Say something so I know I have not been diminished. It is needy in a way he would never admit, because neediness is meant to live on the other side of the bed. Funny, that. The same person who can be all swagger on the way in becomes a legal team on the way down. Wanting reassurance is fine. Demanding that the night reorganise itself around his pride is not.

What actually helps is almost insultingly simple and therefore ignored. Time. Touch that is not a mission. Less commentary. A bit of filth that is playful rather than corrective. Or just stopping, properly, without turning it into a tragedy. There is a version of this where two people laugh, drink some water, carry on with hands and mouths and the kind of unhurried filth that does not require a supporting erection like it is scaffolding. That version is excellent. It also requires him to accept that sex is bigger than one trick.

A lot of them have not accepted that.

They were sold a story where hardness equals wanting, wanting equals worth, and any interruption is a plot hole. So when the body does something human, the story cracks, and they patch it with blame. The universe. The temperature. Last Tuesday. Anything but the quiet truth that male arousal is not a monument. It is more like a mood with blood in it. It comes and goes. It can be shy. It can be drunk. It can be overstimulated from three nights of his own company and then startled by actual skin.

Actual skin is different. It talks back. It has a pace. It does not buffer. For someone used to a screen and a firm grip and a skip button, live contact can be too much and not enough at the same time. Too present. Not controllable. The brain starts narrating. The narration is fatal. You can watch it happen, the second he leaves his body and starts watching himself from the ceiling, assessing, scoring, panicking. Softness follows the narrator in like a loyal dog.

    Then the defence.

I have been with the jokers and the sulkers and the ones who turn into project managers. The project managers are the most exhausting. Right, new plan, different position, more of this, wait no, hang on. It is sweet in theory. In practice it feels like being on a building site. The sulkers are worse. They take the dip personally and then make sure everyone else does too. The jokers, if they are actually laughing and not just covering, are the ones you stay in bed with.

There is a sexy honesty available here if anyone wants it. A muttered I got in my head. A hand that keeps moving because the night is not a pass or fail exam. A willingness to be wanted without being rigid as proof. That is the bit people remember. Not the mechanics. The lack of theatre.

Instead, too often, there is this brittle little masculinity that cannot survive a plot change. He can talk a good game about being relaxed, experimental, good in bed, all the brochure language. Then one physical wobble and he is giving a TED talk about air flow. It is hilarious. It is also revealing. You find out very quickly whether he is having sex with a person or auditioning for a version of himself.

The confusing part, the properly confusing part, is how fast the story shifts from I want you to I must not be seen wanting and failing at the same time. Wanting is allowed. Failing, even for thirty seconds, is treated like a character flaw. So the room takes the blame. Or the day. Or the drink. Or, quietly, the other person, which is the coward’s version.

Bodies are chaotic. They get tired. They get overexcited and then lose the thread. They respond to safety more than speeches. They do not care about the myth that a man is either ready or rejected. That myth has done more damage in bedrooms than bad lighting ever has. Bad lighting is just bad lighting. The myth turns a dip into a referendum and a referendum into a sulk and a sulk into a night that could have been filthy and easy and instead becomes a group project about his feelings.

And look. Softness can be hot if nobody panics. There is a lot of sex that does not require a supporting beam. Mouths. Thighs. The slow grind of two people who have not decided the evening is cancelled. Hands that know what they are doing. A bit of weight, a bit of talk, the kind of unhurried greed that does not need a standing ovation from anyone’s anatomy. The men who understand that tend not to need the press conference. The ones who do not understand it will keep blaming the radiator.

    The radiator is innocent.

So is the day, usually. So is the universe, which has better things to do than sabotage one person’s Friday night. What is guilty, if anything, is the idea that a body must perform on cue or the whole self is at risk. That idea is fragile and it makes people weird. It makes them defensive when they could be present. It makes them explain when they could kiss. It makes them turn a small, ordinary, human glitch into a weather event.

The glitch is not the story. The defence is.

A man who can stay kind and a bit filthy when his body goes quiet is rare and extremely attractive. A man who needs the furniture to take responsibility is a sitcom. Both exist. Sometimes they are the same person on different nights, which is its own joke. Stress is real. Drink is real. Porn habits are real. Anxiety is real. All of that can sit in the bed without turning into a court case. The court case is optional. He keeps choosing it.

    That is the tell.

Not the softness. The speed with which the ego needs a villain. The refusal to let a moment be small. The way a change in his body becomes a problem for the whole room to solve, preferably without naming the obvious. Bodies change their minds. Egos hate a plot twist. One of those two things can be worked with. The other one talks too much.

And the talking is rarely sexy. Explanation is not foreplay. A thesis on temperature is not intimacy. What works, when anything works, is staying in the skin of it. Less story. More contact. A laugh that is actually a laugh. The humility of hanging on while the blood decides what it is doing. If it comes back, good. If it does not, the night is still allowed to be good. That sentence alone would save a lot of people a lot of strange silences.

He will not always want to hear it. The myth is sticky. Hardness as proof. Softness as verdict. Defensiveness as shield. It is an old script and it makes otherwise decent nights feel like damage control. The funny part, the properly funny part, is that the cover-up is so much louder than the thing it is covering. A quiet body. A noisy pride. Same old double act.

Next time the plot drops, notice which one speaks first. The body is usually just taking a second. The ego is already writing a statement. One of them is telling the truth. It is not the statement.

  • Dirty Talk Copied From Clips

There is a very particular quiet that falls when a man says something he learned from a clip and waits for the room to behave like the comments section.

    It does not.

The heating is on. There is a glass of water on the side. Somebody’s jeans are still half on because the zip got dramatic about it. And then, from a perfectly normal mouth, comes a line that sounded filthy through cheap headphones at one in the morning. In the actual room it sounds like the year six play. Everyone knows their cue. Nobody believes a word.

That is the whole joke. Dirty talk copied from clips. Headset hot. Bedroom wooden. He is trying. Properly trying. Shoulders committed. Voice dropped half an octave like he booked it in advance. The effort is almost sweet. The script is not.

Porn talk is written for an audience that cannot answer back. Nobody in the clip is going to say, hang on, that does not make sense with the lighting we have got. Nobody is going to snort because he just called her princess and whore in the same breath like a menu. The audio is doing half the work. Music underneath. Editing. A performer who has said the sentence two hundred times and found the angle. Take that sentence out of the edit and drop it onto a Tuesday in a flat in Essex and it goes stiff. Not the good kind.

He will go for the classics. You like that. Take it. Who’s your. The greatest hits, delivered with the sincerity of a man reading out a parcel code. Sometimes he goes bigger. Filth with a capital F. Words that belong in a caption, not in a mouth that twenty minutes ago asked if there were any clean towels. The whiplash is the funny bit. One minute he is a person. Next minute he is doing an impression of a person.

It is confusing, which is the theme with them generally. He can be funny in the kitchen. Sharp over a pint. Then the clothes come off and he becomes a genre. As if desire has a required accent and he practised it on the bus.

The clip version of dirty talk has no weather. No context. No knowledge of the body in front of him. It is generic hunger in a generic voice. Real heat is specific. It notices. It names the thing that is actually happening, not the thing that performed well last quarter on a For You page. A hand at the back of a neck. The way someone goes quiet when they are into it. The fact that the left side is more trouble than the right and he has finally clocked it. That is talk. The other stuff is karaoke.

And karaoke can be charming for a song. Less so when it is happening against a pillow and he is waiting for a review.

There is a particular strain of copied talk that thinks volume is the same as filth. Louder equals hotter. It does not. It equals a neighbour considering a note. Heat is often quieter. Closer. A bit wrecked. The voice that forgets to perform because the body has taken over the meeting. Copied talk never forgets the meeting. It keeps minutes.

Then there is the character work. Good girl. Bad girl. Little this. Daddy that. Sometimes it fits. Sometimes it is the sexual equivalent of turning up to a house party in a rented costume and refusing to take the mask off. The room has to decide whether to play along or start laughing, and laughing during sex is allowed, obviously, but not when he looks wounded because the monologue did not get a standing ovation.

He looked it up. That is the secret nobody says out loud. Not in a sinister way. In a homework way. He heard a line, saved it, field tested it on the next available evening, and now it lives in his rotation like a signature dish he cannot cook. Confidence without taste. Technique without timing. It is the same energy as the man who changes pace the second it starts working. He has the clip in his head. Reality is the cover version.

What makes it sexier when it is real is how little of it sounds like content. A muttered Jesus. A stupid compliment that is too specific to have been borrowed. Your name, said like it just occurred to him. The opposite of a script: surprise. He is in the room, not in the footage. He sounds like himself with the volume turned toward want. That is the trick they keep missing. The attractive version is not a better actor. It is a worse actor. Less polished. More present. A bit ruined.

Copied talk also has a consent problem dressed up as confidence. The clip assumes the other person is a function. Take it. You love it. Look at you. Fine as play when both people are in on the joke. Less fine when it is dropped on someone who has not agreed to be a stock character tonight. Desire is not a genre you cast people in without asking. The confusing part is he often thinks the line is the asking. It is not. It is set dressing.

There is comedy in the near misses. The man who whispers something apocalyptic and then immediately asks if the window should be open. The one who goes full cinema and then gets shy about taking his socks off. The one who nails a filthy sentence and then grins like he has submitted coursework. Almost. So close. The body was doing something decent and the mouth clocked in with a side hustle.

Women talk about this constantly, just not in the tidy way magazines pretend. It comes out as a look across a table. A replay in the bathroom. That thing he said. It was meant to be hot. It was a PowerPoint. Nobody wants to crush him. That is the other half of the confusion. The ego is fragile in a way the clip never showed. So the line gets a polite moan it did not earn, and he files it under success, and the script survives another week.

What actually works is embarrassingly simple and therefore ignored. Talk about what is happening. Not a fantasy imported wholesale unless that is the game and everyone signed the form. This. Now. That mouth. That pace. Do not stop, said because stopping would be a crime, not because a caption said so. A laugh when something is ridiculous, because sex is ridiculous and pretending otherwise is how you end up with community theatre. Filth that belongs to the two people in the room, not to a stranger with ring lighting.

He could say less. That would help more often than it would hurt. Silence with good hands beats a monologue with poor timing. A single honest sentence beats a paragraph lifted from the internet’s collective dirty mind. The sexy version of talk is not more words. It is better aim.

There is also the aftertaste. Copied talk makes the whole thing feel slightly watched. Like there is a third person in the bed and that person is an algorithm. Hard to stay in a body when the language is doing cosplay. Real talk keeps it local. Skin. Breath. The stupid intimacy of two people who know this is a bit mad and are doing it anyway.

None of this means filth is off the table. Filth is excellent. Filth with a pulse is even better. The difference is authorship. Did he write that sentence with the person in front of him, or did he rent it? Rented lines have a smell. You can clock them the way you clock a fake designer bag. Looks the part from a distance. Up close the stitching is wrong.

The men who get it are not poets. They are just paying attention. They notice what makes someone go still. They steal from the night they are actually in, not from last week’s saved folder. They can be crude. They can be soft. They can be funny in the middle of it, which is underrated and extremely useful. They do not need a persona. The wanting is the persona.

The rest of them are doing a cover and wondering why the crowd is polite.

It would be easier if they were doing it to be annoying. Most of them are doing it because they think that is the assignment. Be filthy. Sound like the clip. Prove you are not boring. The irony is the clip talk is the boring version. It is the same three nouns in a trench coat. Real people are weirder. Better. Meaner in a precise way. Kinder in a precise way. They have a specific laugh. A specific spot. A specific way of going quiet that is worth more than any imported catchphrase.

So the scene keeps repeating. Clothes off. Heat on. And then a line that belonged to a stranger with a ring light. He waits. The room declines to become a set. Somebody has to decide whether to kiss him anyway, because the body is still interested even when the dialogue department has gone on strike.

Usually the kiss wins. Bodies are like that. Generous. A bit foolish. Willing to work with the material.

The talk can learn. It just has to get off the internet first.

  • Aftercare Was Never In The Manual

There is a specific silence that arrives about forty seconds after he finishes. Not the good kind. Not the heavy breathing, forehead on your shoulder, still half inside the moment kind. The other one. The one where the heating clicks, the street noise comes back, and his personality clocks off like a shop assistant at five on the dot.

Sex happens. Then the emotional lights go out.

He will still be in the bed. That is not the same as being there. The body stays. The person who was biting your shoulder two minutes ago has been replaced by a man doing a very convincing impression of someone who has just completed a task. Water? No. Hand? Maybe if it lands on you by accident on the way to his phone. A stupid joke to make the air less naked? Absolutely not. He thinks the scene ended when he did. Credits. Theme music. Please make your way to the exits.

I have watched this trick more times than I can pretend is research. It is always the same shape. During, he is present in that hungry, slightly unhinged way that makes you think, right, this one gets it. He looks at you. He makes a noise that is not performed. He holds on like the mattress might try to leave. Then he comes, and it is as if someone pulled a plug out of the wall. Warmth first. Then nothing. Then the phone face down on the cabinet becomes face up, which is worse.

I am not asking for a speech. I am not asking for a playlist and a fruit platter. Aftercare is not a spa day. It is the part where two people remember they are still animals who just did something intense and now have to live in the same room as the evidence. Sweat. Shake. That daft little laugh because the whole thing is a bit ridiculous when you think about it. A glass of water because mouths get dry and nobody looks elegant after. A hand that stays. That is the manual. Apparently nobody gave it to him.

What he does instead is a sort of professional withdrawal. He will tidy. Not the room. Himself. Pull up, roll, become suddenly interested in whether the window is locked. He will say “that was nice” in the same voice people use for a sandwich. Nice. As if you have both attended a reasonably successful meeting. Then he is on his back staring at the ceiling like it owes him an explanation, or worse, he is already narrating the rest of the night in his head. Food. Sleep. Tomorrow. You are still wet and blinking and he is scheduling.

It would be funnier if it was not so consistent.

The sexy part of aftercare is not complicated. It is the slowness after the rush. Fingers that were urgent becoming lazy. The stupidly specific compliments that only come out when nobody is performing anymore. The way a thigh stays thrown over yours because moving would mean admitting the temperature of the room. Kissing that has no destination. That is erotic in a way the main event sometimes is not, because there is nothing left to prove. He already came. You might have. The scoreboard is shut and there is only skin left. Some men treat that like an empty stadium. Lights off, stewards waving people out.

I keep thinking about how confident they are on the way in. How sure. How they can talk, tease, pin a wrist, find a rhythm, look almost dangerous with it. Then the second it is over they go shy, or efficient, or oddly polite, like intimacy has a time limit and they have overstayed. It is hilarious in a bleak little way. All that hunger and then they cannot look at you properly while you find your underwear. As if the sight of a person they just had inside them is suddenly too much information.

There is also the phone. God, the phone. It appears with the speed of a magic trick. No intermission. One minute he is making that wrecked sound into your neck. The next he is scrolling like the universe might have texted. Nothing important is on there. That is not the point. The point is the room has become optional. You could be glowing, messy, still twitching, and he is checking whether someone liked a story. If aftercare was ever in the manual, that page got ripped out and used as a screen wipe.

I have had the version where he falls asleep so fast it is almost impressive. Mid sentence. Mid breath. Gone. There is a comedy to it, the sudden snore after all that drama, but it still leaves you lying there with your pulse doing overtime and nobody to aim it at. I have had the version where he gets up immediately and goes to the bathroom for a suspiciously long time, then comes back as if the sex happened to two other people. I have had the version where he wants to talk about work. Work. While I am still deciding whether my legs work. That one deserves its own award.

What I want is not a speech about feelings. I want the animal to stay an animal for ten more minutes. Stay warm. Stay a bit stupid. Ask if I want water and then actually get it. Laugh because the condom situation was undignified. Put a hand on my stomach for no reason. Say something filthy and fond in the same sentence. That mix is the whole point. Sex without the landing is just a drop. Fun on the way down. Rough when you hit the floor.

People get precious about the word aftercare, like it belongs only to a certain kind of night, ropes and traffic lights and a written contract. Fine. Use a duller word then. The bit after. The come down. The part where your nervous system is still ringing and someone either helps you put it back in your body or leaves you to do it yourself. Men who think the scene ended when they finished have never noticed that the body does not work like a light switch. Yours does not. His barely does either, he just pretends the slump is a personality.

There is a physical joke in it too. He will be oversensitive, twitchy, a bit wrecked, and still act like he is the one who has completed the programme. Meanwhile you might be halfway there, or all the way there and floating, or not there and pretending, and he has already filed the evening under done. If you say you need a minute he hears it as criticism. If you go quiet he assumes you are fine. If you reach for him he sometimes looks surprised, as if affection after orgasm is an unpaid extra.

I am greedy about this. I will say that plainly. I like sex. I like it a lot. I like the mess and the mouth and the way a night can tilt from chatting to not chatting at all. What I do not like is being dropped the second the useful part is over for him. It makes the whole thing feel thinner. Like he borrowed a body and returned it without looking. You can be good with your hands and still be rubbish at staying. Those are different skills. One of them gets practised. The other one gets skipped because nobody put it in the video.

The funny part, the part that keeps me from getting too sincere about it, is how obvious the fix is. It is not therapy. It is not a seminar. It is a glass of water and a bit of lingering. It is not launching into the logistics of whose Uber it is while I am still finding my bra. It is saying something true and slightly embarrassing instead of “that was nice.” It is letting the quiet be warm instead of empty. Most of them could do it if they did not treat coming like a finishing line with a medal and a press conference.

I think some of them are scared of the softness. During is allowed to be filthy because it has a job. After is just two people, sticky, breathing, no plot. That is the bit that asks more of you. You cannot hide inside technique. You are just there. So they leave without leaving. They go into their heads. They become suddenly practical. They turn into housemates with better abs.

There is a version of aftercare that is quietly filthy rather than tender in a candle way. Keeping a hand where it was. Talking about what just happened like it was good, because it was, and you both know it. Asking if you want to go again later without making it a performance review. Wiping up without making it a sanitation project. Kissing the inside of a wrist for no reason except the night is still happening. That is sexy. It keeps the heat from falling off a cliff. It also makes the next time better, which they would know if they ever stayed long enough to find out.

Instead, the emotional lights go out and you lie there doing the maths. Was it good. Was it worth the sudden vacancy. Do you want tea. Do you want him to leave. Do you want him to stop being a man who thinks bodies reset at the same speed as his. The answer is usually mixed, because the sex can be perfectly decent and the ending can still be cheap. That is the confusing creature part. He can be all in and then all gone. Same hour. Same bed. Different tenant.

I do not need him to narrate his childhood. I need him not to vanish. Stay in the room you just made. The one with the kicked sheet and the laugh that almost happened. Hold the back of my neck like you mean it for another minute. Get the water. Make the stupid joke. Be a person after you have been a body. That is the whole manual. It was never long. He just never opened it.

And if he reaches for the phone before he reaches for you, the scene did not end when he did. It ended when he decided you were optional. That is not mysterious. That is just bad timing with a nice face.

  • He Initiates Only When Blurred

He can sit on your sofa for three hours talking about his manager and not so much as rest a hand on your knee. Tea. Telly. A polite little gap between your thighs and his. You could be wearing the thing that usually does damage and he will compliment the cushion covers. Then he has two pints, maybe three if he is feeling brave, and suddenly he has opinions. About your mouth. About the hallway. About how long he has wanted to get you out of that dress. The wanting was there the whole time. He just outsourced the spine to the lager.

It is a specific kind of confusing. Not the cartoon drunk who cannot find the door. The other one. Functioning. Charming. Still using full sentences. Just loosened enough that the version of him who actually fancies you is allowed out of the cupboard. Sober he is polite furniture. Useful. Neutral. You could put a lamp on him. Two drinks later he is a manifesto.

I have watched it happen enough times to clock the exact minute the switch flips. It is rarely the first sip. First sip he is still performing decency. Second drink the eye contact lasts a beat too long. Third and his voice drops and he starts finding reasons to pass behind your chair. By the time the glass is empty he has rewritten the evening. All that careful distance was a costume. Underneath it he was clocking your collarbone like homework.

Which would be hotter if it did not come with terms and conditions. Because the manifesto only publishes after last orders. Before that you get the respectful act, the I-do-not-want-to-make-you-uncomfortable act, the I-am-a-nice-bloke-who-can-sit-next-to-a-woman-without-being-an-animal act. Fine. Manners are not the enemy. The problem is he treats desire itself like it needs a licence. Alcohol is the licence. Without it he would rather die politely than put a hand on your waist and mean it.

I do not need a man leering over breakfast. I also do not need one who only discovers his own blood after a pint of something cheap. There is a middle. Most of them refuse to live there.

The funny part, and it is funny once you stop being irritated, is how committed they are to the split. Sober him will walk you to the station and not kiss you. Drunk him will text at 1:13am about what he would do if he were there. Same man. Same week. Same body that apparently requires ethanol to admit it has a pulse. You can feel the want coming off him in the daylight. He just will not pick it up. He leaves it on the table like a bill he is hoping someone else will pay.

Lager courage is an old joke until you are the one it keeps arriving for. He gets brave about the filthy stuff and cowardly about the simple stuff. He can say he wants you on your knees after a cider. He cannot say, at 7pm on a Tuesday, that he has been thinking about your mouth since lunch. One of those is supposed to be harder. He has them backwards.

There is a theory that he is being careful. Consent. Respect. Not assuming. All good words. Then you watch him assume plenty once he is blurred. Hands. Timing. The sudden confidence that tonight is the night, because the beer said so. Careful sober. Reckless after. That is not ethics. That is a man who needs a chemical permission slip to want something he already wants.

It gets sexier and stupider in the same breath. Because drunk initiation can be good. I will not pretend otherwise. The edge comes off him. He stops narrating himself. He kisses like he means it instead of like he is filing a request. Clothes come off with less committee. For a stretch of twenty minutes he is present in a way sober him only hints at. Heat. Weight. That low voice that does not show up in the office or on the morning commute. If you already wanted him, that version can feel like the real one finally clocking in.

    Then morning happens.

Morning him treats last night like a rumour. Or worse, like a favour he did while possessed. He makes tea too loudly. He cannot look at your throat. He does a little comedy about how smashed he was, which is a tidy way of saying do not hold me to any of it. The manifesto gets shredded. Polite furniture returns to the showroom. You lie there with the evidence still on your skin and watch him rebuild the gap on purpose.

That is the bit that stays with you. Not the sex. The retraction.

Some of them are shy. Fair. Shyness is allowed. Shyness that only dissolves in alcohol is a different animal. It means he has decided his desire is slightly embarrassing unless he can blame the drink. You become the thing he does when he is not fully himself. Which is a rotten place to stand, even if the night itself was filthy and good. Especially then. Because you know what he is capable of when he stops managing his own reflection. He just will not offer it sober. He rations it. He puts it behind a lock that only opens at last orders.

I have been with the ones who get handsy in the pub and monastic on the walk home, as if the cold air sobered the want out of them. I have been with the ones who wait until they are sloppy and then act wounded when you are not in the mood to be a closing-time decision. I have been with the ones who can only say the filthy sentence if they can laugh afterwards and call it the drink talking. The drink was not talking. He was. He just wanted a witness he could fire in the morning.

It makes the whole dance feel like a loophole. He gets the release. You get the maybe. Maybe it meant something. Maybe he will start it again when he can spell his own name. Maybe the man who was in your bed is the same one making toast. Usually he is not, or he pretends not to be, which is almost the same thing.

There is also the practical mess of it. A man who only initiates when blurred is not always in a state to be good at the thing he has suddenly demanded. Coordination dips. Tempo goes strange. He mistakes volume for skill. He can be tender in a sloppy way and then lose the plot completely. You end up midwifing the night, steering, checking, deciding whether this is still fun or just a project. Nothing kills heat like becoming the responsible adult in a scene he started because he finally felt brave.

And yet. The body does what the body does. There is a particular charge to being wanted in that unedited way, even when you know the editor will be back at dawn. The way he looks at you when the performance drops. The way he says your name like he has been holding it. The way his hands stop being polite. If you like sex, and I do, you can understand why people keep walking into the same pattern. It works just enough. It is hot just enough. It leaves a bruise of almost.

What it does not do is build anything you can stand on. You cannot plan desire around last orders. You cannot ask a pint to be consistent. You cannot have the conversation about what he likes, what you like, the slower stuff, the specific stuff, when half his personality is still at the bar. Sober he will not start it. Drunk he will not remember it properly. The middle, where two people actually get good at each other, never gets a shift.

I keep coming back to the spine. That is the whole article, really. The wanting exists. You can see it in how he watches your mouth when you talk. In how he finds reasons to stay. In the texts that run a fraction too long. He is not empty of it. He is frightened of owning it in daylight. Rejection feels bigger when you are sober enough to sit with it. Alcohol shrinks the consequence and inflates the nerve. So he waits for the shrink. Then he calls it chemistry.

It is chemistry. Plus a pub.

The arrogant part of me thinks it is a waste. A man who can be that direct after two drinks and that absent before them is sitting on a perfectly usable appetite and treating it like contraband. He could just say it. Come here. I have been thinking about you. Stay. He could put a hand on the back of your neck at 8pm and mean it. He could risk looking keen. Keen is not a crime. Keen is the entire point. Instead he launders the keenness through a bottle so that if it lands badly he can shrug. Bit pissed. Ignore me.

I do ignore it, eventually. Not the sex, if the sex is good and everyone is actually capable of choosing it. The pattern. The waiting around for a personality to arrive with the second round. Life is too short to be fancied on a timer. Want me when you can still pronounce it. Start it when the kitchen light is on. Kiss like you will still admit it in the morning.

Otherwise he is just furniture that sometimes comes alive after last orders. Amusing. Occasionally filthy. Not to be relied on. And the joke, if you sit with it long enough, is that he thinks the drink makes him honest. It does not. It makes him loud. Honest would be doing it sober, with his name still attached.

He knows that. That is why he waits.

  • Why He Lasts With A Screen

He can go ages with a laptop and fold in under a minute when there is actual skin in the room. That is the joke people whisper and then pretend they did not just think. Minutes for a video. Seconds for a person. Then the little mental hop that makes the live body the problem. It is not. Attention is. And he has been spending his somewhere else for so long that a real night feels like a pop quiz he never revised for.

A screen does not sigh. A screen does not shift its weight and change the angle by accident. A screen does not say wait, or there, or slower, or laugh when something ridiculous happens. A screen is obedient in a way no human ever is. It starts when he wants. It holds the shot. It never asks how work was. It never needs water. It never looks at him like it would like to come too, thanks. Of course he lasts. He is not having sex. He is conducting traffic.

That is the bit that gets missed when the conversation turns sour. The comparison is rigged. One version is a highlight reel with the boring parts cut and the lighting sorted and the performer already warmed up by the time the clip begins. The other version is a Tuesday. Breath. Elbows. A duvet that will not stay put. A person who can tell when he has left the room in his head. No edit. No skip. No second take if the first thrust is a bit eager and a bit nothing.

He lasts with a screen because the screen asks nothing of him except his eyes and his hand. That is a very specific kind of stamina. It is the stamina of a spectator. Put him in the scene and suddenly there is a plot. There is another nervous system. There is the faint pressure of being perceived. Some men find that hotter than anything. Plenty do not. Plenty have trained themselves on a diet of friction and novelty until a living partner feels like too much information.

Novelty is the quiet villain. A video can be a different body every night without any of the social cost. New mouth, new angle, new ridiculous scenario that would get someone thrown out of a flat in real life. The brain likes new. It lights up. It delays. It can wander around a buffet for forty minutes and call it endurance. Then a familiar person takes their jeans off and his system treats it like the same song on repeat. Familiar should be an advantage. Familiar should mean he knows the map. Instead familiar gets filed under already seen, and the body he actually has access to becomes the thing he rushes through.

There is also the small, unsexy mechanical truth. A lot of men have taught their hands a tempo no mouth or hips can match. Tight. Fast. Specific. Same grip, same speed, same finish line. Do that for years and a person is not a disappointment. A person is simply not a fist. The wiring gets used to a level of pressure and predictability that skin does not offer. Then he is in bed acting confused about why the usual trick is not working, as if the live version failed a test it was never set.

Performance anxiety sits under it too, even when he would rather die than call it that. A video cannot judge the angle. A video cannot notice he is thinking about whether he is doing it right. A video will not go quiet in that particular way that means the mood just left the building. With a person there is the possibility of being average. That possibility makes some men speedrun the whole encounter just to get to a result they can recognise. Finish. Proof. Done. The screen never asks for proof. The screen already performed the fantasy for him.

It is funny until it is not. Funny because the contrast is so cartoonish. He can narrate an entire plot line to a glowing rectangle and then lose the plot the second someone puts a hand on his stomach. Not funny when the person in the bed starts doing that private little audit. Is it me. Is it the body. Is it the way I sound. Is it that I had the nerve to be three dimensional. That audit is a waste of a good evening. The live version is not the defect. The live version is the only version that can actually touch him back.

Attention is the whole trick. He lasts when he can disappear into looking. He finishes fast when he has to stay. Looking is easy. Staying means tracking a breath, a hip, a change in pressure, the moment someone gets close and then slips away if he panics and changes everything. Staying means he cannot mute the other character. A lot of men have been practising disappearance. They call it winding down. They call it taking the edge off. What they are actually practising is sex without a witness.

And yes, it can still be hot, the screen thing, in the abstract. There is a reason people like watching. Control. Distance. The particular filth of being able to stop time. None of that is a moral failing. It becomes a problem when the watching sets the standard for the doing. When the body in the room is expected to compete with a thousand edited strangers and a hand that already knows the shortcut. That is not chemistry. That is a rigged match.

Someone can be properly good in bed and still lose to a clip. Not because they lack some secret move. Because they blink. Because they exist at a normal temperature. Because they want something back. Desire that goes two ways is slower and stranger and less obedient. It also happens to be the only kind that feels like anything the next morning. A video does not leave a mark on the day. A person does. Some men find that intensity and bolt for the finish line like the building is on fire.

There is a particular face they make. Not the pleasure face. The concentrating face. The one that says he is trying to stay in it and the mind has already opened a second tab. That tab is usually a comparison. A memory of a scene. A private highlight. Once that tab is open the clock starts. He is not with the body in front of him. He is trying to overlay a picture onto it. Pictures do not take as long as people. Pictures do not need warming. Pictures do not say that was nice, do that again, and then wait to see if he heard.

Hearing is the other casualty. A screen never talks back, so he never has to practise listening with his hands. In a bed the information is constant. Faster. Left. Less teeth. Keep going. Do not you dare stop now. If he has spent years in a one way conversation with pixels, those instructions feel like criticism instead of a map. So he hurries. Hurrying feels like competence. It is not. It is just panic in a sexy font.

The confusing part, the proper male mystery of it, is that he can want the person and still treat them like an interruption. He can fancy them in the kitchen, get hard in the hallway, then treat the actual sex like a task to complete before his attention runs out. Wanting and attending are not the same skill. Plenty of men have the first in bulk and the second in crumbs. The screen trains the crumbs. It rewards the shortest path to a result. A person rewards the long way, the stupid detour, the minute where nothing happens except two people not rushing.

That minute is where he loses. Not because he is broken. Because he has not used that muscle. The muscle that stays when it would be easier to finish and roll over and check a phone. The muscle that can be a bit useless for a stretch and not take it as a verdict. Real stamina is not the number of minutes a clip can hold him. Real stamina is whether he can remain in the room when the room is warm and unscripted and looking back.

It gets sexier when he does remain. Obviously. When the rush drops and he actually clocks the way a stomach tightens, the way a laugh turns into something else, the way a person will take over if he stops treating the night like a race he has to win against his own habit. That version lasts. Not always in the clock sense. In the I am still here sense. Which is the only duration that matters once the lights are off and there is no pause button.

Until then the pattern stays petty and a bit tragicomic. Long sessions with a rectangle. Short ones with a pulse. Then the quiet implication that the pulse was the issue. No. The issue is a man who got very good at being alone with an image and then seemed shocked that a body wanted him present. Presence is the kink a lot of them have not practised. It is also the one that makes the cheap comparison fall apart.

A screen will wait. A person will not wait forever. That is not a threat. That is just how attention works when it has somewhere better to be. He can keep the laptop. Fine. What he cannot keep doing is acting baffled when the live show refuses to behave like content. Content is easy. Content is patient. Content does not get wet and then look at him like it would like him to notice.

Notice. That is the whole article, really. He lasts with a screen because noticing is optional there. In a bed it is the main event. Miss that and of course the timing goes to pieces. Hit it and the minutes stop being the point. The point becomes the stupid, specific, uneditable fact of someone actually being there.

  • Eye Contact During Oral Panic

There is a particular silence that happens when a man is on his knees and suddenly remembers he has a face. Not the good silence. Not the thick, filthy kind where the room goes quiet because something is actually working. The other one. The one where his eyes do something unhinged and the whole evening has to decide whether it is still sexy or whether it has become a performance review.

He has two settings. That is the joke and also the problem.

Setting one is the job interview. Full beam. Unblinking. Locked on like he has been told eye contact equals enthusiasm and he is going for employee of the month. It is intimate in the way a torch in the face is intimate. You can feel him thinking. You can almost hear the little internal checklist. Am I doing this right. Do I look into it. Should I smile. God, do not smile. He smiles anyway. It is the smile of a man being photographed against his will. Very earnest. Slightly damp. Absolutely fatal to the mood if it goes on too long.

Setting two is the opposite and somehow just as loud. He looks anywhere else. Ceiling. Headboard. A fascinating bit of paintwork from 2019. His own forearm, as if it has just arrived and needs introducing. Sometimes the eyes shut so tight it looks like prayer. Sometimes they drift to the side with the thousand yard stare of a man doing maths. That one is my personal favourite. Nothing says passion like watching someone divide 333 by 3 while their mouth is theoretically occupied.

Both options announce themselves. That is what people miss. Looking away is not subtle. Staring is not confident. They are just two different ways of panicking with the lights on.

I have thought about this more than a well adjusted person should. Comes with the territory when you actually like sex and keep meeting men who treat faces like a health and safety issue. The middle ground exists. It is not complicated. Present. A bit filthy. Not performing. Rare as hen’s teeth, that one. When it turns up you notice, because the room stops being a scene and starts being a body again.

Why the panic, though. That is the bit that keeps being funny long after it should have got boring.

Part of it is porn, obviously. Not in the pearl clutching way. In the practical way. On a screen the camera does the looking for everyone. The person receiving is arranged. The person giving is cropped. Nobody has to decide what to do with their actual human eyes in a badly lit flat in Essex at twenty past eleven on a Wednesday. Then they get into a real bed and suddenly there is a whole face attached to the situation. Faces are information. Information is dangerous. So he either overcommits or absconds.

Part of it is ego. Eye contact during oral is intimate in a way thrusting never has to be. You can hide in rhythm. You cannot hide in a look. If he glances up and catches something like pleasure, he has to live with the fact he caused it. If he glances up and catches something like patience, he has to live with that too. A lot of them would rather inspect the ceiling than risk either verdict.

Part of it is just not knowing where to put themselves. Men get told to be present. Then they get told not to stare. Then they get told confidence is hot. Then they get told reading the room matters. By the time they are actually down there the advice has stacked up into a small nervous breakdown happening behind the eyes. You can watch it in real time. The brows do a little negotiation. The gaze tries a position, hates it, tries another. It is like watching someone test chairs in IKEA except everyone is undressed and one of you is trying to have a nice time.

The job interview version usually comes from the ones who have read a tip. Somewhere, sometime, a blog told them eye contact during oral is the sexiest thing you can do. They took it literally. No dose information. No timing. Just apply continuously until the subject is either impressed or slightly frightened. There is a difference between catching someone’s eye because the moment pulled you there and pinning them like you are waiting for a signature. One feels like heat. The other feels like being audited.

And it is a shame, because a look in the middle of it can be filthy in the best way. Not a speech. Not a performance. Just that flicker of I know exactly what I am doing and I like watching it land. That is the stuff. That is the thing people mean when they say presence. It lasts a second. It does not require a TED talk. Then he can go back to the work, which, if we are being honest, is the point.

The looking away crowd think they are being polite. Or cool. Or mysterious. What they are mostly being is elsewhere. Closed eyes can be hot if it is because the sensation knocked him out of language. Closed eyes because he cannot bear being seen is a different animal. You can tell. The jaw tells on him. The hands tell on him. There is a version of looking down that is hungry, focused, almost rude in the nicest sense. Then there is the version that is just escape. Same direction. Completely different temperature.

I once had a man stare so hard I started wondering if I had something on my face. Not metaphorically. Actually. Mid way through what was supposed to be a good idea I nearly asked if I had toothpaste on me. That is how official it felt. Like he was about to slide a form across the duvet. Another one kept his eyes on a plant in the corner with such commitment I wanted to introduce them. Lovely fern. Hope you two are very happy.

The comedy would be enough on its own. Except it is also sexy when it goes right, which is why the panic is irritating rather than just background noise. Because the body is already doing something vulnerable and specific. Oral is not casual, no matter how casually people pretend. It is close. It is wet. It is noisy in ways nobody puts on the group chat. Adding a stare down or a full spiritual departure on top is just poor project management.

What the good ones do is simpler than they think. They look when there is something to look at. They look away when the sensation takes the wheel. They do not treat the eyes like a switch that has to be either slammed on or ripped out. A glance up because he wants to see the effect. A half smile that is not a job application. Then back to it, mouth busy, brain not writing a review. That is presence. That is the middle. It feels like being with a person instead of a strategy.

There is also the strange cousin of all this, the man who makes eye contact for one intense second and then whispers something he heard in a clip. Please do not. If the look was working, the TED Talk ruins it. Filthy and quiet beats filthy and scripted. Always. A look that says I want this is hotter than a sentence that says I want this while his eyes are doing payroll.

Women talk about technique until the cows come home. Hands, rhythm, the obvious geography everyone pretends is mysterious. Fair. Technique matters. Faces matter more than people budget for. You can forgive a clumsy minute if the person in front of you is actually there. You cannot forgive perfect mechanics delivered by someone whose soul has nipped out for a vape.

That is the confusing creature bit, really. He will spend twenty minutes telling you how much he wants it. He will light up at the idea. He will be hard before the kettle has boiled. Then the second the thing he asked for is happening, his eyes file a resignation. Or they overstay. Desire with no idea how to inhabit itself. Hunger that gets shy when it has to have a witness. It would be tragic if it were not so consistently funny.

I do not need a man to gaze into my soul like we are in a period drama. I am not asking for cinema. I am asking for him not to look like he is either proposing or hiding. The bar is on the floor and somehow still catching shins.

When it works, you feel it immediately. The room tightens. Not because anyone is performing heat. Because somebody stopped managing their face and let the moment have it. He looks up because he wants to. He looks down because that is where the job is. He does not narrate either choice. That little stretch of ordinary filth, the one with no branding on it, is worth more than the whole confident act he practised in his head on the way over.

Men treat eye contact like it is a personality test. It is not. It is just another part of the body that can either help or hover awkwardly in the doorway. Use it. Do not move in with it. Do not evict it. Let it come through when the thing in front of you is good enough to watch.

Until then, we will keep getting the two classics. The interview. The ceiling. Both very committed. Both missing the plot by about six inches and one entire nervous system.

The middle is still available. It always was. He only has to stop thinking about what his eyes mean and start noticing what they are looking at. Revolutionary stuff. Almost rude, how simple it is.

  • All Women Work The Same Apparently

He does the thing. The Thing. Capital T. The move that got a noise out of someone in a rented room in 2019 and has been on tour ever since. No interval. No rewrite. Just the same little flourish, rolled out like a house special he is still proud of.

It usually arrives with confidence. That is the part that makes it funny. Not shy confidence. Not the sweet kind where a person is trying and hoping. The other kind. The signed, sealed, already decided kind. He has a method. The method worked once. Therefore the method is science.

Bodies are not science like that. Bodies are weather. One night a hand on the hip is filthy and perfect. Next night the same hand feels like someone parking a trolley. Same skin. Different day. Different head. Different week. He does not clock any of that. He is too busy plating the signature dish.

There is a sequence. There is always a sequence. Kiss that lasts the approved amount of time. Hand under the top like he is clocking in. A squeeze that means well and still manages to feel like customer service. Then the descent, brisk as a fire drill, as if the interesting part of a person starts and ends in one postcode. It is not even bad, exactly. It is familiar. That is worse. Familiar in bed is how you end up thinking about emails.

The 2019 move has variants. Sometimes it is a particular angle he swears by. Sometimes it is a bit of dirty talk that sounded devastating in his head and lands like a line from a phone advert. Sometimes it is the two-finger situation delivered with the energy of a man who watched a diagram once and never asked whether the diagram had opinions. He looks pleased with himself either way. That face. Like he has just remembered the wifi password.

Curiosity would save him. Curiosity is hotter than the move. Curiosity is a person paying attention when the breath changes, when the hips do that tiny unhelpful thing, when the noise is polite instead of involuntary. Confidence without that is just volume. Loud, sure. Not accurate.

He will tell you, if it comes up, that he knows what women like. Women, plural, as if we were a brand with a manual. Same settings. Same buttons. Same finish time. It is almost sweet until you realise he means it. He has met enough bodies to feel qualified and not enough to notice they keep disagreeing with each other.

One wants pressure. One wants almost nothing and then a lot, suddenly. One can come from being looked at too long in a kitchen. One needs twenty quiet minutes and a brain that has clocked off from work. One likes being told what to do. One will leave if you try it. He applies the 2019 special to all of them. Then looks faintly betrayed when the reviews come back mixed.

The arrogance is the sexy part and the stupid part at the same time. There is something compelling about a person who just goes for it. Hesitation can kill a room. So can the opposite, though. The opposite is a man performing a greatest hits set for an audience he has not actually met. You can feel the setlist. Track one. Track two. Guitar solo that does not belong. Encore nobody asked for.

I have been on the receiving end of the Greatest Hits. More than once. It is never identical and it is always identical. That is the joke. Different flats, different mouths, same plot. He finds a spot that made a previous person swear and he camps there like it is a holiday let. Does not check whether this particular body is on holiday. Just unpacks.

Sex gets better when someone treats it like a conversation you can have with your hands. Not a speech. Speeches are what you get from men who think technique is a personality. Conversation is when he changes because something in the room changed. A laugh. A flinch. A yes that comes out ugly and honest. That is the bit that makes your stomach drop in the good way. Not the recycled swirl. The listening.

He rarely asks. Asking, to him, sounds like incompetence. As if wanting information were the same thing as not knowing how to undo a bra. So he guesses. Guessing can be filthy when it is attuned. Guessing is grim when it is stubborn. There is a difference between I think you might like this and I have decided you like this because a girl in Shoreditch made a noise in the last decade.

The tasting menu idea is not complicated. You try a thing. You watch. You adjust. You try the thing next to it. You do not announce yourself as a chef because you reheated last year’s pasta. Some of the best nights start clumsy. A bit of laughing. A wrong turn that becomes the point. That requires a person who can bear not looking like an expert for thirty seconds. A lot of them cannot. Expertise is the whole costume.

Porn does not help. Of course it does not. It trains the brain to expect a standard model. Standard speed. Standard reactions. Standard finishing pose, chin up, lighting decent. Real bodies are poorly lit and oddly timed and sometimes go quiet when they are closest. Real bodies do not come with a progress bar. He keeps waiting for the progress bar. When it does not appear he switches move, bigger, harder, as if volume were translation.

There is a particular tragedy to the man who is generous and still generic. He is trying. He wants it to be good. He will stay down there like he has paid rent. And he will do the same pattern he did on a Thursday in 2022 because that Thursday got a result. Effort without attention is still a bit lonely. You can feel the effort. You can also feel that it is not about you. It is about the routine proving itself again.

Then there is the opposite man, the one who does ask, but asks like a survey. What do you like. List format. In the doorway. Before anyone is even warm. That is not curiosity either. That is admin. The good version is smaller. A pause. A look. A “this?” said into skin. Room to say no without writing a statement. Room to say more without producing a PowerPoint.

People pretend women are mysterious on purpose. Some of that is laziness with better branding. Plenty of it is men refusing the ordinary work of noticing. Noticing is not romantic poetry. It is clocking that the same stroke is now annoying. It is clocking that talking filthy works until it suddenly feels silly. It is clocking that she was into it ten minutes ago and now she is in her head about tomorrow’s meeting. None of that is a riddle. It is just a person.

The 2019 move survives because it is easy. Easy on the ego. Easy on the learning curve. You do not have to admit that the last body taught you something that does not transfer. You do not have to start again at beginner every time you get someone new out of their jeans. Starting again is the hot part, if you can stand it. New map. New pace. New stupid joke when teeth clash. That is alive. The signature dish is leftovers.

I like confidence. I will say that plainly. A timid night can feel like everyone is waiting for a manager. There is a way to be sure of yourself without treating a stranger’s nervous system like a vending machine you already know the code to. Sure looks like this: I am going to try. I am going to watch. I am not going to sulk if the thing that slayed in 2019 gets a polite smile and a redirect.

Redirects are where the evening actually starts. A hand moved. A yes, like that. A no, not there. A laugh that means keep going but for the love of god change the angle. Men who take that as criticism miss the point so hard it is almost athletic. It is not a performance review. It is collaboration. Collaboration is sexier than being impressive. Impressive is a pose. Collaboration gets people noisy in the way they cannot fake.

There is also the myth that if you are good in bed you should just know. That myth has ruined more nights than bad lighting. Nobody just knows. They learn the person in front of them, or they learn a script and hope the person fits it. Hope is not a technique. Hope is how you end up doing the hip thing again while the other person stares at the ceiling and wonders whether the plant needs watering.

Specificity is the erotic bit people skip. Not fifty positions. Not a suitcase of toys by default. Specificity is he remembered that the back of the neck does something unhelpful and kind. Specificity is he stopped talking when talking was getting in the way. Specificity is he did not assume the same pressure, the same words, the same finish. That is what makes it feel like it is happening to a particular body, not a category.

Category is the insult hiding inside the compliment. You are so sexy. You are like other sexy people. Therefore the hits collection applies. It flattens you into a type. Types are for dating apps and bad films. In a room with the door shut, type is a way of not looking.

I keep coming back to the face he makes when the move lands. Pride. Relief. A little bow, even if he does not stand up. He did the thing. The thing is done. If the room does not catch fire he looks briefly confused, then doubles down, same thing, more commitment, like shouting a wrong postcode louder will get you to the right house. Commitment to a bad idea is still a bad idea. Just sweaty.

The men who get it are not magicians. They are nosy. They want the data. They want the ugly honest noises more than they want to look skilled. They will abandon a move they like if it is doing nothing. That abandonment is filthy. It says the person matters more than the routine. You can feel your whole spine react to that. Being seen is not a soft idea. In this context it is physical. It changes how the air sits.

Meanwhile the signature dish guy is still out there, touring. New kitchen. Same plate. He will leave thinking it went fine because nobody made a speech. Most people do not make speeches. They just do not text first the next day. He will not connect those facts. He will connect them to timing, to mood, to Mercury, to anything except the possibility that last year’s special is cold.

It would be easier if it were cruelty. Cruelty you can bin. This is sloppier. This is a person who likes sex and still cannot be bothered to treat it as particular. He wants the feeling of being good at it more than he wants the evidence. Evidence would require looking up from the method.

So the method stays. The 2019 swirl. The approved squeeze. The line that almost worked on someone whose name he does not say. Confidence where curiosity should be. A tasting menu replaced by one plate, reheated, served with a grin that expects applause.

Some nights you take the plate anyway. Some nights it is late and you are not running a seminar. That does not make the cooking better. It just means people are hungry. Hunger explains a lot of average sex. It does not excuse calling it a recipe.

The ones who last in the memory are never the ones with a move. They are the ones who threw the move out when it bored the room. Who asked without turning it into a meeting. Who treated a body like it had not read the same article he did. That should not feel rare. It does. That is the whole problem, plated and still steaming, as if novelty were included.

It is not. Novelty is just attention with its sleeves rolled up. He could try it. He probably will not. He already knows what women like. He learned in 2019. He has not had a reason to update the specials board since.

  • He Thinks Arousal Means Yes

He clocks the heat and files it under permission. That is the whole trick, really. A flush at the throat. A shift in the hips. The body doing that ancient, inconvenient thing where it gets interested before the rest of the person has finished thinking. He treats it like a signed form. Wetness as a contract. A harder breath as the green light. Physics mistaken for a decision.

It would be funnier if it did not keep happening in rooms that were otherwise going quite well.

Arousal is a reflex with better lighting. It is blood and nerve endings and a brain that likes a mouth on a collarbone. It is not a plan. It is not a timetable. It is not I have reviewed the evening and I would like you to proceed to the main event now please. The body can be halfway down the road while the person is still checking the map. Plenty of people have been turned on in situations they did not want to finish. Plenty have wanted someone and still said not tonight, not like this, not you, not yet. That is not a glitch. That is a person having more than one system running at once.

He does not love that version. Too many moving parts. The simple story is nicer. She is warm, therefore she is in. She made that sound, therefore the rest is housekeeping. If she liked him enough she would not pause. If she were really into it there would be no sentence starting with wait.

I have watched that logic arrive in real time. One minute it is all hands and that lovely stupid urgency, the next he has leapt three steps ahead because the evidence looked promising. The evidence was a body doing what bodies do. The decision had not clocked in yet.

There is a particular look they get. Not cruel, not even always arrogant. Just certain. Like the case is closed. Like continuing is the polite thing, the obvious thing, the thing any reasonable adult would do now that the temperature has changed. You can feel the room shrink when that look lands. Suddenly the air is full of an expectation nobody agreed to out loud. Suddenly saying hold on feels like cancelling a booking he already paid for in his head.

And the thing is, the heat can be real. Proper real. That is what makes the mix-up so sticky. Nobody is pretending the body is a nun. A good kiss can light the whole fuse. A hand at the back of the neck. The weight of someone who smells right. Wanting can sit in the same chair as caution and they do not cancel each other out. They just sit there, both of them, waiting to see who gets the remote.

He acts like they cannot share the furniture.

I have been so gone for someone my knees went a bit useless and still known, clear as a till receipt, that I was not sleeping with them that night. Not because the wanting was fake. Because wanting is not the same as choosing. Because the morning after lives in the same body as the night before. Because liking a mouth does not mean handing over the rest of the evening on a plate. That distinction is not complicated. It only becomes complicated when someone needs it to be simple for their own convenience.

The carried away speech is a classic. As if desire is a runaway pram and he was merely jogging behind it, helpless, a passenger in his own trousers. Funny, that. The same man can pause a match, answer a text, not crash the car, and remember where he put his keys. Agency exists right up until it would be useful for him to have less of it. Then it is all instinct and poor timing and I thought you wanted to.

Thought is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

What he thought was that the body had voted and the person was a formality. What he missed is that people vote more than once. They vote with their mouth. They vote by stilling a hand. They vote by laughing and changing the subject. They vote by staying dressed. They vote by saying I fancy you and I am going home anyway. All of those are answers. The flush on the chest is not the only ballot paper in the room.

There is also the myth that a no after heat is a personal insult. As if the body getting involved was a promise and the pause is a breach. You can watch the sulk form. Not always loud. Sometimes just a cooling, a little withdrawal, the energy of a man who feels tricked by biology he does not understand. He was ready. The evening had a shape in his head. Now it has a different shape and he takes that as a verdict on him rather than a verdict on the moment.

It is not about him. That is the part that never quite lands. A person can want the taste of someone and still not want the whole plot. A person can be soaked and still be thinking about work in the morning, the flatmates on the other side of the wall, the fact they have only known this face for four hours, the condom situation, the vibe that just shifted, a hundred unsexy and completely valid pieces of information. Desire does not wipe the board clean. It just turns the lights down and hopes nobody notices the admin.

I like sex. I like it a lot. I like the stupid rush of it, the way a good night can make the week feel less like a spreadsheet. I am not writing this from a tower of restraint. That is why the confusion winds me up. If anyone is going to be sloppy with the difference between heat and a yes, it should not be the person who benefits from collapsing the two. Being good in bed is not speed. It is not assumption. It is not treating a gasp like a signature. It is staying in the room with the actual person, not the version you pre-approved when their breathing changed.

The sexy version of this, the one that actually works, is slower in the head even when it is filthy in the hands. Check the face. Listen for the sentence, not just the sound. Leave a gap big enough for someone to change their mind without having to make a speech. Wanting someone and waiting half a beat is not a vibe killer. The vibe killer is the sense that the ending has been decided and you are now an extra in it.

I have had nights where the wanting was ridiculous and the answer was still later. Later can be hotter than now, if now would have come with a little grit in the teeth. I have also had nights where the yes was so obvious it could have had its own postcode. Those nights did not require a detective. They required a person who could tell the difference between a body saying ooh and a person saying yes. Astonishingly, those are not the same noise.

Men get very philosophical about self-control when it is theoretical. In the doorway it gets mystical. She was into it. She kissed me back. She let me under the shirt. Each of those can be true and still not add up to the next thing. Letting someone under a shirt is not a loyalty card. Ten stamps and you collect the prize. It is a shirt. It can come off. It can stay on. Both options can exist in a body that is thoroughly, inconveniently interested.

The room gets smaller when he starts negotiating with the heat instead of the person. You can feel the argument forming even if nobody raises their voice. But you were into it. But you made that noise. But we already started. Started is doing another load of heavy lifting. Started what. A kiss is a kiss. A hand on a waist is a hand on a waist. The rest is a separate invitation. Treating the first as a down payment on the last is how people end up smiling with their mouth and bracing with the rest of them.

Bracing is a terrible way to have sex. It is also a very common one. Not because the wanting was absent. Because the decision got steamrolled by someone who thought the wanting was the whole story.

There is a kinder reading, and I will give it to him for a second, because I am feeling generous and the kettle has not boiled yet. Some of them were taught that male desire is a weather system and female desire is the forecast that must match it. If she is sunny, the picnic is on. If she clouds over after looking sunny, she must be playing games. Nobody handed them a diagram that said the nervous system can rev up while the person attached to it is still doing risk assessment, taste assessment, timing assessment, do I actually like this one assessment. So they panic. Or they push. Or they go quiet in that wounded way that makes the other person feel like they have committed a paperwork error.

Still not an excuse. Just an explanation with a hole in it.

The better ones ask without turning it into a committee meeting. They leave space. They can take a not now without turning into a damp sock. They understand that a body can be loud and a mouth can still say another time, and that this is not a moral failing or a bait and switch. It is just two different instruments. The pulse is not the chairperson.

I keep coming back to the contract idea because that is what it feels like from the other side. An invisible terms and conditions page that got ticked when the breathing changed. You did not tick it. He is already quoting clause four. That is when the evening stops being dirty fun and starts being a debate you did not schedule.

None of this means desire should be treated like a court case. God, no. The good nights are sloppy and obvious and a bit stupid in the best way. You know when it is yes because the yes is coming from the whole person, not just the bit with the blood in it. There is a looseness. A leaning in that does not have a flinch underneath. You can feel the difference the same way you can feel the difference between someone laughing with you and someone laughing to keep things moving. One is heat. One is management.

He confuses those two and then looks baffled when the room goes tight.

If there is a punchline, it is this. The body is easy to read if you only want one answer. The person takes slightly more attention. Attention is the bit that separates a good time from a story someone tells later with their jaw a little set. Wanting can be filthy and still come with a pause. A pause is not a rejection of him as a species. It is a person remaining in charge of their own evening. That should not be a controversial hobby.

Heat is not a yes. It is heat. Lovely, inconvenient, sometimes extremely useful heat. The yes lives somewhere else. In the words. In the way someone pulls you closer instead of going still. In the fact they are still looking at you like a choice, not like a scene that has already been shot.

Until he gets that, he will keep walking into rooms that felt big and leaving them smaller. And he will keep calling that chemistry.

It is not chemistry. It is a mix-up with good lighting.

  • Mixed Signals In The Dark

He is starving at midnight. Proper starving. Hands already under the shirt before the kettle has even thought about boiling, mouth on the neck like he has been thinking about it since lunch and only now got permission from his own nervous system. The room goes small. The telly becomes wallpaper. He wants skin, heat, the sort of contact that makes conversation feel like a waste of a good mouth.

    Then morning happens.

Same man. Same bed. Same mouth that was filthy four hours ago now doing a very convincing impression of a locked door. A polite kiss if you are lucky. A grunt if you are not. Phone in hand. Body angled toward the wall like closeness is a weather system that passed overnight and left him damp and slightly resentful.

It is the same desire. It just comes with a fire exit.

That is the bit that does the head in. Not the horniness. Horniness is honest. It is simple. It has a beginning and a middle and, if everyone is paying attention, a decent end. The confusing part is the speed of the retraction. One minute he is all heat and urgency, pressing a person into the mattress like the world might end if he does not get closer. Next minute he is allergic to needing anyone. Acts like wanting was a glitch. Acts like the night was a favour he did himself and morning is when the invoice arrives.

It is sexy until it is not. That is the joke.

Because midnight him is good. Let’s not pretend otherwise. Midnight him is the version that looks at you like dinner. Handsy in that specific way that is not clumsy so much as decided. He finds the waistband without a meeting. He makes that low sound when something works. He wants it messy and close and a bit greedy. There is a thrill in being wanted like that, in the dark, when the day has been put down and nobody is performing competence anymore. Clothes come off with less ceremony. The flat is quiet except for breath and the occasional stupid laugh when teeth clash or a knee goes somewhere unhelpful. It is hot. It is easy. It feels like the most straightforward thing two people can do.

Then the light changes and so does he.

Morning him treats the night like a rumour. He will still take a cup of tea. He will still say the traffic is bad. He will not, under any circumstances, look like a person who was gasping into a pillow at two in the morning. The body is there. The appetite has clocked out. If he touches at all it is practical. A hand on the back as he passes. The sort of contact you give a colleague with a birthday card. Meanwhile the sheets still smell like him. That is the rude part. Evidence everywhere and the witness refusing to take the stand.

People love to call this a mystery. It is not that mysterious. He can want the act without wanting the aftermath. He can want the heat without wanting the fact of being wanted back in daylight, when it looks a bit more like feeling and a bit less like sport. Night gives him cover. Morning asks questions. Even silent ones. A look held too long. A foot finding his under the duvet. The soft, dangerous possibility that last night meant something other than getting off and going to sleep.

So he builds a back door into the desire and leaves it on the latch.

He will text late. Not early. Late is safer. Late is horny without the administrative burden of being a person in someone’s day. Late says I want you in a way that can still be blamed on whisky, insomnia, or a sudden and very localised power cut in his self control. Then he goes quiet enough to make the phone feel heavy. Not blocked. Not cruel. Just… unavailable in that floating, foggy way that makes a person check the last message three times to see if they imagined the tone.

The sex, when it happens, often carries the same split. Present in the body. Half out the window in the head. He can be excellent with his hands and still vanish the second it is over, lying there like a man who has completed a task and would now like to be praised without being known. Or he stays for the second round because the body has not finished arguing with itself, then treats the cuddle as optional DLC. Nice if it happens. Not part of the base package.

It would be less funny if it were not so consistent.

There is a type. Not all of them. Obviously not all of them. The ones who stay warm in the morning exist and they should be studied for science and possibly cloned. But the mixed signal model is common enough to have a smell. Cologne and vape and that little flicker of panic when tenderness shows up uninvited. He can do filthy. Filthy is a performance he has rehearsed. Soft is the scene he keeps skipping.

Ask him what he wants and he will say you. Ask him in the morning and he will say coffee. Both answers are true in their time slot. That is what makes it slippery. He is not always lying. He is just only available in certain lighting.

The erotic part sits right next to the joke. Because the midnight version is not fake. The mouth is real. The urgency is real. The way he says stay when he is inside that heat is real enough to believe for an hour. Bodies do not fake hunger very well. What they fake is aftermath. What they fake is the bit where two people have to exist as more than pulse and skin. So the night gets the good scenes. The morning gets the credits nobody watches.

It is almost impressive, the speed of the switch. One minute he is biting a shoulder like he might leave a receipt. Next minute he is discussing bins. The same hands that were greedy are now occupied with socks. There is a comedy in it if you squint. A man can be deep in the most unguarded sound of his week and still, by eight a.m., have reconstructed his entire personality around not looking keen.

Keen is the enemy. Keen means he might need something. Need means someone could leave and take the feeling with them. So he does the desire in the dark, where it can be intense and still deniable, and he does the distance when the kettle clicks. A tidy system, if you ignore the person on the other side of it trying to work out which version they are dating.

The allergy to needing anyone is the engine. You can see it in the way he flinches at plans. In the way he will crawl across a mattress at 1 a.m. and then take three hours to reply to a normal message. In the way he can be desperate for a body and still allergic to the sentence I missed you. He wants the temperature without the weather. He wants the spark without the small, unglamorous fact of being in someone else’s morning.

And it works, for a while, because the spark is good. Let’s be adults. A man who wants you like that, late, with no audience, can make a flat feel like the only place on earth. There is a particular quality to being pulled back into bed when the night is already supposed to be over. Half asleep, half laughing, then not laughing. The kind of sex that does not need a playlist. Just heat and the faint knowledge that tomorrow he may act like a lodger who has never seen you naked. The contrast is part of the charge. Annoyingly.

That is the trap. The mixed signal is not only confusing. It is compelling. The brain tries to solve him like a puzzle because the midnight chapter was vivid enough to replay. So the distant morning becomes a cliffhanger. Maybe he is shy. Maybe he is busy. Maybe he feels more than he can say. Maybe the universe will correct itself if the next night is even better. The hope does push ups in the background while he puts his trainers on and leaves a kiss on the cheek that could have been for his nan.

Meanwhile the body remembers. That is the unfair bit. Skin keeps receipts. A person can be perfectly clear, in the head, that this is a man with an escape hatch, and still feel the ghost of his mouth at lunch. Still catch themselves smiling at a stupid joke he sent at 00:41 and then frowning at the radio silence that followed. Desire with a back door already open is still desire. It still lands. It just does not stay.

Some of them know they are doing it. You can tell by the timing. The late text after a good day of being unavailable. The sudden heat after a week of being mates. The way he gets extra present right before he gets extra gone. Others look genuinely startled by their own temperature drop, as if morning them is a roommate they have not been introduced to. Both versions are exhausting. One is strategy. One is mess. The result in the bed is similar.

There is also the particular comedy of him acting starved. Starved men should, in theory, be simple. Feed them. Done. Except this hunger comes with terms and conditions written in invisible ink. He wants it now, badly, like he has been running on fumes. Then the second it is done he would prefer not to be a person who needed it. The shame is quiet. It does not announce itself. It just puts a bit of air in the bed and calls it normal.

So the night gets the honesty and the morning gets the brand management.

A better design would be one man in both lighting conditions. Same mouth. Same want. Same stupid softness after, the kind that does not require a speech, just a hand that does not leave. That version exists. He is not a myth. He is just not the one sending mixed parcels at midnight and unmarked boxes at dawn.

Until then, the pattern keeps repeating in flats all over the place. Handsy. Distant. Starved. Allergic. A whole weather system in eight hours. Sexy enough to say yes to. Funny enough, later, to tell a friend while vaping on the balcony and shaking your head at the sheer talent it takes to want someone that much and still leave a door on the latch.

The dark makes him brave. The morning makes him careful. And the careful version always acts like the brave one was a different bloke entirely.

Which, in a way, he was.
