He can talk. That is not the same as listening.
This is the part people dress up as chemistry or timing or him being nervous, when it is often much simpler. You said a short sentence in a clear voice and he treated it like background noise. Not malice, necessarily. Just a man who heard the sound of a request and filed it under optional.
The test is ugly because it is small. You do not need a manifesto. You do not need a three page list of likes. You pick one simple thing and you say it like you mean it.
Slower.
There.
Do not stop.
Then you watch what he does with it.
If he adjusts, stays, keeps the thing going because you asked him to, you have information. If he nods, makes a noise of agreement, and immediately changes pace anyway, you also have information. The second kind is the one that wastes evenings. He is not a puzzle box. He is homework you should not mark.
App nights make this worse. The chat has already done a version of listening. He liked your photos. He remembered the bar you mentioned. He sent the right amount of filth at the right hour. It feels like attention. Then you are in a room and the body version of him arrives with a preloaded idea of how this is supposed to go. Your sentence has to compete with that idea. A lot of the time the idea wins.
It is funny until you have lived it enough times to lose the novelty. Funny because the request is not exotic. You are not asking him to recite poetry or hang from the ceiling. You are asking him to stay on a rhythm his own hips already found. You are asking him not to wander off the second something starts working. You are asking him to treat your voice as part of the sex instead of a podcast playing in another room.
He will say he is listening. They nearly always do. Listening, in this context, is not the same as waiting for his turn to continue.
There is a generous reading and a less generous one. The generous reading is nerves. First time in a new bed. He wants to be good. Good, in his head, means variety. Variety means changing it every forty seconds so you do not get bored, as if a woman mid sentence is a television programme that needs a new camera angle. He thinks he is being considerate. He is actually breaking the thing that was building.
The less generous reading is that he likes the idea of you enjoying yourself more than he likes the work of staying with what you asked for. A request makes the night less about his performance and more about your actual body. Some men find that exciting. Some find it a bit insulting, like you have marked his coursework before he has finished showing you his method.
You can feel the difference in the air. The first kind goes still for a second, then follows. The second kind smiles, says yeah, and does the other move he had planned in the hallway.
This is why one request is enough. Ten requests turn you into a project manager. One request is a door. He walks through it or he does not.
Say it once while you still have patience. Say it again when he drifts. Keep the words short. Long explanations give him somewhere to hide. If you start a speech about how your body works, he can nod through the speech and miss the instruction. Slower is an instruction. There is an instruction. Do not stop is an instruction. Instructions have a better success rate than essays.
It will feel blunt the first time you do it without the softener. People are trained to wrap desire in please and if that is okay and only if you want to. Manners are fine. Manners are also how a clear sentence gets sanded down until it sounds like a preference he can ignore. You can still be warm. Warm is not the same as faint.
If he laughs and slows down, good. If he gets a bit proud of himself for doing the obvious thing, let him. Pride is useful if it keeps him in the right place. If he goes quiet in that sulky way, as if you have broken the spell by having a nervous system, that is also useful. The spell was only working for one of you.
There is a serious bit under the joke and it is worth saying without a wink. Not being listened to in bed is not a cute quirk. It is how people learn to make the noise instead of the request. It is how a night becomes something you manage rather than something you are in. You start thinking ahead. You start steering with your hips instead of your mouth because the mouth did not work. You start calling it fine.
Fine is a miserable standard for a body.
The app makes that standard easier to accept because the bar is already on the floor. You matched. He turned up. He was not weird at the door. The kiss was all right. By the time you are undressed, a lot of women have already spent their assertiveness budget on getting through the logistics. Asking for a condom. Asking if anyone else is in the flat. Asking whether this is actually happening. Then the sex starts and the last bit of energy goes on being pleasant.
Pleasant is how you get a man who thinks the night went well.
Try the test before you are too far in to be honest. Early is kinder to both of you. Early also means you have not invested the whole performance. If he cannot hold a simple line in the first twenty minutes, he is unlikely to discover patience at minute forty five. People love a redemption arc. Most Tuesday night hookups are not going to grow one while you wait.
You can make it part of the heat instead of a correction from the sidelines. Pull him closer and say it into his mouth. Put your hand over his and move it. Say there when he lands on the place that actually does something. If he stays, reward that with the kind of response he cannot miss. Men are not complicated about feedback when it is physical and obvious. Use that. It is not manipulation. It is teaching the room what works.
If he treats the request like a challenge to his expertise, end the experiment. Expertise that cannot take direction is just ego with its shirt off. You are not obliged to soothe that. You are not obliged to spend the next hour proving you can come anyway so he does not feel criticised. That is unpaid labour with kissing attached.
There will be the man who listens once, gets you close, and then decides he knows better. He has seen the finish line and would like to add his own flourish. This is the most common failure. Do not stop means do not stop. It does not mean now surprise me. It does not mean faster to show enthusiasm. It does not mean switch sides because he is getting tired and would like a different view. Tired is allowed. Changing the one thing that was working, without a word, is how you lose the plot.
Say it again. Same words. No new speech. If he still cannot do it, you have your answer and you can stop trying to translate.
The humour is that this should not need an article. Listening is not an advanced kink. Children manage it when you tell them not to touch the hob. Grown men lose the skill the second they are turned on, as if arousal floods the part of the brain that handles short sentences. Some of them recover it. Some of them need it spelled out so plainly it feels almost rude. Rude is fine. Rude and clear will get you further than polite and unfinished.
There is also the version where he listens to the request and then interviews you about it. Why slower. Is this always. Did I do it wrong before. That is not listening either. That is making your pleasure into a performance review for him. You do not have to hold a seminar on your own nervous system for a man you met after nine. A sentence should be enough. If he needs a dissertation, he is not present. He is anxious and looking for a grade.
Anxiety is human. Your body is not his calming toy.
What you are testing is not whether he is a good person in the round. He might be lovely about splitting the bill and walking you to the taxi. He might text when he says he will. None of that automatically transfers to the part where you ask him to stay where he is. Character in daylight and attention in the dark are related and still not identical. Judge the bit you are actually in.
If he passes, do not act shocked. Let it be normal. That is the point. Listening should not feel like winning a prize. It should feel like the minimum temperature of the room. You can get filthier after that. You can get softer. You can try the thing you did not mention in the chat. Competence creates space. Incompetence fills the space with your own effort.
If he fails, resist the urge to coach him through a full rehabilitation in one night. That instinct comes from being good at communication and assuming other people want to use the skill. Some of them do not. They want to be told they were great. They want the story of the evening to survive contact with your actual feedback. You cannot fix that between midnight and two.
Get dressed when you are ready. Be civil. Be done. The app will still be there in the morning, which is either depressing or practical depending on how much sleep you got. The useful part is this. You did not spend three more dates training a man to hear a three word sentence.
There is a reason the test works better than a long pre game conversation. Talk is cheap on Hinge. Talk is cheap in the kitchen while the kettle boils. The body is where the hearing shows. You can tell him your whole inventory of likes and still watch him default to whatever he did last time. One live request, repeated, cuts through the inventory. It is happening now. It is small enough that failure looks like failure.
Slower.
There.
Do not stop.
If those words cannot land, nothing fancier will. Save the fancy for someone who has already proved he can do the ordinary thing. The ordinary thing is the whole game. Everything else is decoration.
A man who can listen is not automatically the love of your life. He is simply safe to get more honest with. That is a higher bar than people admit. Honesty in bed is not a personality trait you switch on alone. It needs a pair of ears that do not treat your voice like garnish.
So start there. One line. Said twice if you have to. Watch the hips, not the nod. The nod is theatre. The hips are the truth.
