Ask What He Is Like

The chat has already lied to you once. That is the starting point, not the twist. He has been funny in the clean way, then funny in the filthy way. He has asked about your day with just enough care to look house trained. He has built a little weather system between your phone and his, warm enough that getting on a bus at ten pm starts to feel reasonable. None of that tells you what he is like when the clothes come off. It tells you what he is like when he has time to edit.

So ask him before you travel.

Not his star sign. Not whether he is a morning person. Not the soggy dating question about what he is looking for, which is how men end up saying connection while packing a toothbrush they do not intend to use. Ask the dirty practical one. What do you actually enjoy doing.

It sounds simple because it is simple. That is why so many of them cannot do it.

Women get trained out of the question. You do not want to look intense. You do not want to kill the mood you have spent four days building in a message thread. You do not want to be the one who makes sex sound like a meeting with an agenda. So you go. You arrive. You let the night invent itself. Then you discover he has one speed, one idea, and a face like you have asked him to assemble furniture without the manual.

Men who cannot answer will not suddenly become fluent in bed. Fluency is not a spell that kicks in at the doorway. If he cannot name a preference with his clothes on and his thumbs warmed up, he is not going to become a generous, curious, specific lover under worse lighting.

There is a serious reason to do this and a funny one, and they live in the same sentence. The serious reason is time, safety, and the fact that your body is not a complimentary welcome drink. The funny reason is that some of them panic as if you have asked for their national insurance number. Watch that panic. It is useful.

A good answer has texture. I like going slow at the start then getting a bit rough if it is working. I am better with my hands than people expect. I want to go down on you before anything else or I get in my head. I like being told what to do. I go quiet when I am close, that does not mean stop. That is a person who has met himself at least once.

A bad answer is fog. Whatever you want. I am easy. I just like making a woman feel good. All of it, baby. Those are not preferences. Those are posters. Whatever you want often means I have not thought about you as a specific body. I am easy often means I would like you to run the evening so I cannot be blamed for it. I just like making a woman feel good is the sentence men use when they have never asked a woman what good would be.

Then there is the grocery list. Oral, doggy, hair pulling, choking, finish on your. No order. No temperature. No sense of what he is like when someone is actually there. That is not honesty. That is a search history with the lights on. Thank him for the clarity and decide whether you are in the mood to be a scene partner in a clip he has already watched.

Ask before you travel so the answer can still change the plan. In the doorway it becomes etiquette. On the bus it is still a choice. In the chat it is even cleaner. You are not trapped in his kitchen making conversation with a man whose best sexual idea is enthusiasm and hope.

You can keep the tone light without making it a joke you do not mean. You already know how to talk to him. Use that. I am heading over in a bit. Before I get on the train, what do you actually like doing. Not the polite version. The real one. If that feels too blunt for the thread you have built, put it inside the filth he has already started. You have been talking a big game. Tell me what you actually enjoy, not what you think sounds hot.

The point is not to run an interview. The point is to see whether there is a person behind the performance.

Some of them will flip it straight back. What do you like. That can be fair. It can also be a dodge. Answer him, briefly, then put the ball back. I like being warmed up properly and I like a man who can stay on one thing when I say do not stop. Your turn. Men who only want to hear your list are collecting instructions they do not intend to follow. Men who listen to your list and then offer their own are at least in the same room as the idea of sex as a two person activity.

This is where the humour writes itself. The man who was feral in the DMs goes suddenly pastoral. The man who sent a paragraph about your mouth cannot say the word mouth without coughing. The man who asked for photos develops a stammer when asked what he would do if the photos became a body on his sofa. It is funny until you realise you almost left the house for that.

Take the stammer seriously. Shyness is allowed. Silence dressed up as mystery is not. There is a difference between I go a bit awkward talking about it and I have no idea what I am like because I have only ever copied what I have seen. One can still have good hands. The other arrives pre loaded and then looks injured when the live version does not behave like the screen.

You are allowed to want app sex that is still sex, not a transaction with moaning attached. Asking what he enjoys is how you find out whether he thinks of sex as something that happens to a woman or something he is in. That sounds heavy. It is not. It is the difference between a man who says I want to fuck you and a man who can tell you how he likes to start, what he does when he gets nervous, and whether he notices anyone else in the bed.

Pay attention to where his answer lives. If every sentence is about what he will do to you, he may be generous or he may be directing a film in which you are the set. If every sentence is about what he wants done to him, you already know the shape of the night. If he can hold both, there is hope. Not a wedding. Hope. Hope is the correct currency for Hinge.

There is also the safety layer that people skip because it feels like ruining the dress. A man who cannot talk about sex often cannot talk about condoms, pace, stop, or the fact you have work in the morning. The question is not a condom talk. It is a fluency test. People who can name a want are more likely to hear a limit. Not always. Often enough that it is worth putting on your shoes a little later.

If his answer is all intensity and no brakes, believe him. If he only lights up when the subject is how wrecked you will be, believe that too. Filth is fine. Filth without a picture of you as a person with a nervous system is just appetite with better spelling.

Try treating the answer as a preview, not a contract. He likes giving oral. Good. That does not mean he is good at it. It means he has a place he wants to begin. He likes it rough. Fine. That does not mean he understands warm up, or timing, or the small matter of asking whether rough is welcome tonight. You are not booking a package holiday. You are seeing whether his imagination includes anyone but himself.

A useful follow up, if he manages a real first answer, is what he does not like. Watch that even closer. I do not like being rushed. I do not like fake noise. I do not like being compared to whoever came before. I go off if I feel like I am being tested. Those sentences have blood in them. They also give you a way to be decent to him, which matters if you still want the night to be hot rather than extractive.

You can be generous without being a rehabilitation project. That is the line. Asking the question is not an offer to teach a grown man the plot. If he answers like a person, you can play. If he answers like a slogan, you can stay home, wash your hair, and keep the peculiar optimism for a better thread.

The walk of honour feels different when you asked first. You are not lying there doing amateur detective work on a stranger’s technique, trying to guess whether the quiet is shyness, selfishness, or a man who thought the job was turning up. You already have a scrap of truth. He told you he likes to take over. He told you he likes to be told. He told you he does not really know. That last one is annoying and oddly respectable. Do not know is better than I am easy. Do not know means you can decide whether you feel like finding out with him.

None of this makes app sex virtuous. It just stops it being quite so stupid.

Women waste a comic amount of energy translating men who were never going to be specific. You sit on the edge of a bed that is not yours, being pleasant, giving him the benefit of the rhythm, while he does a greatest hits of things that work on nobody in particular. Afterwards he will say that was amazing because he came, and you will get in a car with your coat over last night’s clothes wondering why the chat was better than the body.

The chat was better because the chat had time. The body only has what he brought with him.

So make him bring it in words first.

If he can tell you what he enjoys, you can meet him there or you can decline. Both are adult. Both are hotter than arriving on a wish and a vibe. If he cannot tell you, you have learned the only thing that matters before your Oyster card takes the hit. He is not mysterious. He is unprepared.

There will still be nights you go anyway. Want is like that. The question does not make you sensible. It makes you harder to sell a stranger to. That is enough. Ask what he is like. Listen to the shape of the answer. Then decide whether the door is worth it.
