  • Schedule It Without The Shame

Spontaneous is a lovely story. It is also how weeks disappear.

The myth does a lot of work. Two people look at each other across a kitchen, the air changes, clothes come off, the night arranges itself like a film. No calendar. No conversation. Just weather. Want arrives fully dressed and on time, and everyone gets to feel chosen rather than organised.

Then Monday happens. Then the inbox. Then the flatmate in the next room running a bath. Then the train that makes a person feel sixty. Then Thursday, which is somehow already Friday, and the only thing that happened in bed was sleep with a phone still in somebody’s hand.

Waiting for lightning is not romantic. It is a system with no system. The diary fills itself with everything except the thing that is supposed to make the rest of the week feel less like admin.

There is a particular shame around putting sex in the plan. It sounds unsexy the second it becomes a sentence. Schedule it and the magic dies. Say Thursday and the whole thing starts smelling like a dentist reminder. People would rather have nothing than admit they need a slot. Pride is expensive like that.

It is a strange pride, too. Nobody is ashamed of booking a haircut. Nobody waits to feel spiritually moved before they buy toothpaste. Food gets planned. Work gets planned. Seeing friends gets planned, even the friends who are supposed to be easy. Sex, which actually requires two bodies in the same room with enough energy left to be useful, gets left to chance like it is a shooting star.

    Chance is terrible at diaries.

The serious bit sits under the joke. A sex life does not usually end with a row. It ends with gaps. One tired night becomes three. Three becomes a fortnight. The fortnight starts meaning something. Then the meaning gets heavier than the wanting, and the wanting gets shy because it has not been practised. Bodies are not mystical. They are habitual. Leave them unused and they do not stay poised. They go quiet. Then someone calls it a loss of spark, as if spark is a lodger who packed a bag for no reason.

Spark is often just opportunity with better lighting.

Wanting can arrive after the decision. That is the part people do not like saying because it ruins the legend. The legend says desire has to come first, fully formed, or the night is fake. Plenty of nights start as a practical yes. A look. A time. A closed door. Then the body catches up, because bodies are suggestible when they are given half a chance. Heat is not always a lightning strike. Sometimes it is a tap you bother to turn.

This is not an argument for grim duty sex. Grim duty sex is how people start resenting the other person and their own skin. The point is not to lie there doing a favour. The point is to stop treating desire like a mood that must announce itself before anyone is allowed to act. Moods are flaky. They get buried under Tesco runs and late emails and the particular emptiness of getting home and sitting down for “five minutes.”

    Pick a night.

Not every night. That is how it starts feeling like a second job. One night. Or two, if the week can take it. Put it somewhere that is not already doomed. Sunday evening when both of you are already half gone is a poor bet. Wednesday when work has teeth is a poor bet. A night with a bit of runway is better. Time to eat. Time to stop being an employee. Time to remember there is a body attached to the person who has been answering Slack like it owes them money.

The fear is that naming the night makes it official and official makes it cold. It can. If the night gets treated like a meeting, it will feel like one. Shoes off, phone on the side, a quick glance at the clock, right then, shall we. That version deserves the mockery it gets.

There is another version. The night is protected the way a decent dinner is protected. You do not invite a third conversation into it. You do not start a row at 8pm and hope the body will forgive you at 9. You do not keep one eye on a delivery slot. You make the room slightly easier than usual. Not petals. Not a soundtrack from a hotel advert. Just less friction. Door shut. Light that does not feel like an interrogation. The phone in another room, which is a small act of civilisation people treat like a spiritual practice.

Then you start before anyone is impressive.

That is where scheduled sex usually fails. People turn up expecting the finished product. They want the heat without the dull first ten minutes. They want to be ready on contact, as if bodies keep an engine running all day on the off chance. Most bodies do not. Especially not after a commute and a day of being polite. The first stretch is allowed to be ordinary. Kissing that is not trying to win anything. Clothes coming off without a deadline. Hands that are paying attention rather than rushing the plot.

Give it twenty minutes of not being in a hurry and the appointment feeling starts to loosen. The night stops being an item and becomes a room again.

Humour helps, and not the brittle kind. The fact of it is already funny. Two adults, supposedly wild, negotiating their own lust around bin night and a shared bathroom. There is nothing dignified about whispering “are we still on for later” over pasta. Dignity was never the point. The point is that later actually happens.

A flat makes this more comic and more necessary. Thin walls. A housemate who does not understand headphones. The kettle as a warning system. Planning is not the enemy of heat in a flat. Planning is how anyone gets a locked door and a clear hour without someone asking if the washing is done. Spontaneity in a shared hallway is just noise with consequences.

Work does a similar thing. A personal assistant diary is already a monument to other people’s needs. If sex only gets the scraps, the scraps will look like scraps. Putting it in the week is a small act of rank. It says this counts. Not more than rent. Not more than keeping a job. Enough to exist beside those things instead of underneath them.

There is a class of advice that tells people to “just initiate more,” as if initiation is a personality trait some lucky bodies were born with. Initiation is easier when there is already a yes in the calendar. The guesswork drops. Nobody has to perform mind reading. Nobody has to risk a whole speech at 11pm when the other person is already horizontal and half gone. The night has been chosen. What remains is follow through, which is less glamorous and much more useful.

Follow through is the serious part.

Because once a night is picked, it can still be ruined with impressive efficiency. One person treats it like a box to tick. The other feels the ticking. Someone brings a mood from work and unloads it onto the mattress. Someone keeps the phone face up, just in case. Someone expects an orgasm on a timetable and then gets brittle when bodies refuse to perform like trains. That is not scheduling. That is turning intimacy into customer service.

If the night is going nowhere, say so before it becomes a bad play. Tired is allowed. Not tonight is allowed. The whole point of a plan is that it can move. Shift it. Do not let one failed Thursday become proof that planning is death. One cancelled gym session does not mean fitness is a lie. People are very dramatic about sex in a way they are not about anything else that requires showing up.

There is also the opposite problem, which is more common than anyone admits. The night arrives, both people are there, and then nobody starts because starting still feels like a request. The schedule was supposed to remove the awkwardness. It only removes it if somebody is willing to be obvious. A hand. A look. A sentence that does not pretend this is a surprise. “Come here” will do. It is not poetry. It works.

Wanting, when it does turn up after the decision, often turns up sideways. Not as a cinematic surge. As interest. As the body getting involved once it realises it is allowed. A mouth that was only being polite becomes useful. A laugh happens. The day starts falling off. That is the bit the lightning myth cannot account for, because the myth needs desire to be a visitor. Sometimes desire is just what happens when two people stop treating each other like colleagues who share a duvet.

None of this means spontaneous sex is dead. When it arrives, it is still one of the better jokes life plays. A Tuesday with no right to be good. A look in the kitchen that does not get filed under later. Those nights should be taken. They just cannot be the business model.

A sex life that only runs on surprise will lose to the diary every time. The diary is aggressive. It does not feel shame about putting itself first. Work will take the hour. Tiredness will take the hour. Scrolling will take the hour and call it rest. Sex will stand outside like a guest who was never given a time.

    So give it a time.

Call it what it is if that helps. Thursday. After food. Before the episode that turns into four episodes. Do not dress it up as a wellness practice. Do not turn it into a spreadsheet with goals. Keep it human. Keep it a bit greedy. The shame is mostly borrowed from a story that was never built for people with jobs and rent and a brain that will happily postpone pleasure until it becomes theoretical.

Theoretical sex is very easy to be sophisticated about. Actual sex needs a door, a bit of time, and the unfashionable decision to treat it as real enough to plan.

Lightning can still visit. Let it. Just stop pretending the house should stay dark until it does.

  • Quickies Work With Focus

A quickie gets a terrible reputation for a reason. People treat it like leftover sex. The scraps. The thing you do when there is no time for the proper version, as if the proper version is always a two hour production with lighting and a soundtrack and a beginning, middle and end that would satisfy a film editor.

That is how five minutes turn cheap.

Not because five minutes is too short. Because ambition walks in and tries to cram a whole night into the gap between a locked door and a kettle boiling. Too many positions. Too much plot. Hands everywhere and nowhere useful. Clothes half off in a panic rather than half on with intent. Then both of you standing there afterwards like you have just sprinted for a bus and missed it.

Short sex works when it has a job. One job. Pick the thing that actually works and do that. Stay there. Keep the pace. Leave the variety pack in the drawer.

This is not an argument against long nights. Long nights are excellent. Long nights are where the talking happens and the teasing happens and somebody can take the scenic route around a body like they have paid for the tour. A quickie is a different animal. It is heat with a clock on it. The clock is not the enemy. The refusal to respect the clock is.

Start with the unromantic bit, because the unromantic bit decides whether anyone enjoys themselves.

Door. Time. Noise. Where the clothes can go that is not a trip hazard. Whether anyone is about to knock. Whether you need a condom or a hand on the packet before anyone is too far gone to think. Quickies fail on logistics more than they fail on chemistry. Chemistry is usually present. That is why you are in the hallway considering poor decisions. What is missing is a brain that will admit, we have seven minutes, so we are not auditioning for a highlight reel.

Clothes half on is not a compromise. It is the aesthetic and the practical truth of the thing. A skirt shoved up. A shirt still buttoned wrong. Jeans open and not even fully down. There is a specific charge in that. The body is available and the day has not been fully clocked off. You can still hear the outside world. You can still feel the ordinary life sitting one room over. That tension is doing work a scented candle will never do.

The second you try to get fully naked, find the perfect angle, relocate to the bed, dim a light and have a conversation about who is in the mood for what, you are not having a quickie any more. You are having a cancelled evening that has not admitted it yet.

Pick one position you can both do without a briefing. Against a wall if the height works and the wall can take it. Sitting on a kitchen counter if the counter is not a death trap. Bent over something sturdy. On top, but the lazy version, the grind, not the athletic show. Lying down only if the bed is already right there and nobody has to migrate like you are moving house.

Then pick a pace and treat it like a contract.

This is where most short sex goes stupid. Somebody finds a rhythm that is actually doing something and immediately decides to improve it. Faster. Deeper. A new angle. A hand that was useful leaves to go and be ambitious somewhere else. The body was climbing. The remix starts. The climb falls over.

In a long session you can recover from that. There is time to find the thread again. In a quickie there is not. The useful window is small. Guard it like it is expensive, because it is.

If a hand on the clit is what makes the rest possible, that hand stays. If a certain pressure against a certain spot is the whole trick, do not abandon it for a position that looks better in theory. If mouth first is the only way the rest of the body catches up, then start there and do not treat it as a courtesy nibble on the way to the “real” bit.

The myth that penetration is the main event is how women end up having efficient sex for somebody else. A quickie can still centre the part of the body that actually finishes the job. Fingers. Mouth. A small toy you can reach without turning on a light. Him inside and a hand where it needs to be, same time, no debate. Short does not mean simple for him and vague for you. Short means concentrated.

That is the serious centre of this.

A lot of people, men especially, hear “quickie” and translate it as “I get to skip the part I find confusing.” No warm up. No attention. No check that anyone else is even in the building. Just urgency, a bit of thrusting, a proud look, and the sense that something adult has been achieved.

Urgency is hot. Urgency without aim is just haste. Haste feels like being fitted in. There is a difference between I want you now and I can squeeze this in before my mate texts. The body knows. The body is not stupid.

So the standard is this. If there is only time for one thing, the one thing should still belong to both people. Not equally in some spreadsheet way. In the ordinary human way where nobody is being used as a convenient warm location.

Say the useful words early, because there is no second act for a long discussion.

That. Stay. Harder. Slower. Do not stop. Hand here. That is enough. A quickie is not the moment for a TED talk on desire. It is the moment for clear directions and a bit of filth if filth arrives naturally. One honest sentence will do more than a paragraph of performance.

Dirty talk in a short window goes wrong when it tries to set a scene. There is no time for a scene. There is time to name what is happening. You feel good. I have been thinking about this. Do not you dare stop. Keep it close to the facts. The facts are usually sexier than the script.

Humour helps, until it becomes a way of dodging the fact you are both a bit desperate and a bit exposed in daylight, or in work clothes, or in a bathroom that was not designed for romance. A laugh is fine. A running commentary that turns the whole thing into a joke is how the heat leaks out. You can be funny after. During, keep a little of the seriousness. Wanting someone fast is already a serious thing. It means the day was not enough. It means the body voted.

Morning versions have their own rules. Mouths are rough. Hair is a crime scene. Nobody looks like a campaign. That is the appeal if you let it be. Water helps. Lube helps more than pride will admit, especially if you have gone from sleep to yes in the space of a weather report. The lazy grind beats the sudden athletics. Save the dramatic tempo for nights with more runway.

Lunchtime versions, the ones with an hour that is not really an hour once you count walking in and looking normal after, need even more focus. Do not start something that requires a shower, a personality change and a recovery period. Choose the version that leaves you able to go back into the world without looking like you have been in a minor incident.

Night ones, the “we have twenty minutes before someone gets home” ones, are where people get greedy. Twenty minutes feels luxurious after five, so they try to have the long night in compressed form. That is how you get half of everything and all of nothing. Still pick one route. You can have a slightly longer on-ramp. You cannot have four chapters.

There is also the question of coming, which people get weird about as soon as a clock is involved.

He will often assume that if he finishes, the quickie has succeeded. That is a very tidy definition if you are him. For the other person in the room it can feel like the story ended at the interval. Sometimes there really is not time for two endings. That happens. Adults can live with it if the attention was real and nobody pretended otherwise. What wears thin is the pattern where short always means his ending and your almost.

If the short window is a regular feature of the sex life, then the planning has to include you as more than atmosphere. Start with what works for you. Or finish that way. Or keep a toy in the drawer that does not require a meeting and a mood board. Efficiency should cut the waffle, not the female half of the plot.

And if you do not come, that does not automatically make it a failure. Sometimes a quickie is about the hit of being wanted in the middle of an ordinary day. The kiss that goes too far. The hands under clothes. The proof that the other person is still in there, still animal, still interested when the calendar is being rude. That has value. It just should not be the only value on offer, week after week, while one of you keeps leaving the room more finished than the other.

Aftercare in miniature still counts. You will not get the long, stupid, tender sprawl. You can get a mouth on a mouth. A forehead. A bottle of water. A look that says that happened and I am still here. Then you both put the day back on. Button the shirt. Smooth the hair that cannot be saved. Walk back into the kitchen like the furniture has no idea.

That last part is part of the pleasure if you let it be. The return to normal. The secret sitting under smart casual. The knowledge that the body had a plot twist and now it is answering emails again. A long session changes the temperature of a whole evening. A good quickie changes the temperature of the next hour. Both are worth doing well.

What to try, practically, next time the window is small.

Decide the location before the clothes become a debate. Stay near a wall, a counter, a bed that is already there. Keep standing if standing is stable. Sit if the knees are not in the mood to be heroic.

Keep as many clothes on as the act allows. The restriction focuses the hands. It also saves the later faff of finding a sock.

Choose the single move that has the best hit rate for your body. Not the one that looks the most like sex in the abstract. The one that makes your breath change. Then refuse to upgrade it.

Put a hand where it is needed and leave it there. If that means you are touching yourself while he is doing the other part, that is not a sad compromise. That is competence.

Use spit or lube without a speech about it. Dry and rushed is how short sex becomes sore sex, and sore sex makes the next invitation less welcome.

Watch the tempo like it is the only instrument in the band. When it is working, it is working. Stay boring on purpose.

Stop when the time is gone rather than trying to steal a finale that needs another half hour. Ending cleanly is hotter than ending in a scramble.

The cheap feeling people complain about is rarely about the minutes. It is about being hurried through someone else’s urgency. Focus fixes that. Focus says, we have a small amount of time and I am going to spend it on the thing that makes this worth doing. Not on the performance of having done many things.

    That is the whole trick.

Want fast. Aim small. Stay with it. Leave the epic for the nights that can hold an epic. A quickie is not the understudy of real sex. It is real sex with a narrower brief. Treat the brief with a bit of respect and it stops feeling like leftovers. It starts feeling like the best decision anyone has made all afternoon.
