  • Stop Performing The Porn Sounds

The soundtrack can go. Not the sound. The soundtrack. That is the distinction nobody bothers with, and it is doing more damage than a bad angle ever did. There is a noise a body makes when something is actually working. Then there is the other noise, the one borrowed from a clip that was scored for an audience of one man and a ring light. One of those belongs in a bed. The other belongs in a bin.

It starts innocently enough. Someone wants to be good at this. Someone wants him to know it is going well. Someone has watched enough of the official version to believe sex comes with a house band. So the mouth supplies one. A little high. A little regular. A little too ready, like applause at the end of a sentence that has not finished yet.

The room knows. That is the unfunny part.

Fake sound has a texture. It arrives on schedule. It swells when the choreography swells, not when the body does. It sits on top of the breath instead of coming out of it. After a while it is not even sexy. It is set dressing. He hears encouragement. What he is actually getting is a review written in advance.

This is where the joke and the problem share a flat.

The joke is obvious. Two people in a dark room and one of them is doing community theatre. The moan that could have been emailed in. The gasp with punctuation. The little oh that does not belong to the person making it. It is funny until you notice what it trains.

Because he is listening. Of course he is. Men are not mind readers, and most of them will take the loudest available information and call it a map. If the soundtrack peaks when he does the move from the video, he files that move under success. If the soundtrack dips when he finally hits the pace that might have worked, he files that under not that. The performance does not just cover the truth. It writes over it.

Then everyone wonders why the night keeps missing.

There is a serious reason this happens, and it is not vanity. A lot of people were taught that being wanted meant being easy to read in the flattering direction. Make it simple for him. Make it obvious. Do not let the room go quiet long enough for anyone to notice you are still climbing. Noise becomes manners. Manners become a script. The script becomes the price of staying in the scene.

Faking a sound is not always the same as faking an orgasm. Sometimes it is smaller and stranger than that. It is filling the air so nobody has to sit inside the real pace of a body. Real pace is uneven. It goes silent. It goes ugly. It catches. It sounds like someone running for a bus, not like someone starring in their own preview clip. That silence can feel dangerous if the whole point of the night has been to keep him comfortable.

    So the mouth works overtime.

Breath is better. That sounds like wellness sludge until it is happening. Breath is the honest instrument. It changes when something is good. It snags when something is too much. It goes shallow when the brain is still deciding. It goes low when the body has stopped negotiating. You cannot really counterfeit it for long. You can try. It still gives you away.

A real noise is almost never pretty in the way the clips are pretty. It is shorter. It is less musical. It might be a laugh that surprises you. It might be a swear under the breath. It might be nothing for a whole minute and then one ugly sound that would never make the edit. That is the one that actually moves the room. Not because it is louder. Because it is attached to a person instead of a performance.

The myth is that being vocal is automatically hot. Being vocal can be hot. Performing vocal is a different job. One is presence. The other is customer service.

There is also the practical mess of it. If the soundtrack is always on, there is no signal left for the useful words. “There.” “Slower.” “Do not move.” Those lines need air around them. They need the contrast of a mouth that is not already busy doing scales. When every thrust gets a review, none of the reviews mean anything. He cannot tell the difference between you being polite and you being close. That is how people end up with ten minutes of enthusiastic nonsense and no ending worth the sheets.

It is not his fault if he believes the audio. It is not entirely yours either. The official version of sex has been dubbed for years. Women in those clips are not having a conversation with their own nervous system. They are providing evidence. Evidence that he is effective. Evidence that the scene is working. Evidence that nobody in the room is allowed to be ordinary.

Ordinary is where the good sex lives, which is an annoying sentence and still true.

Ordinary sounds like breath against a shoulder. Ordinary sounds like a swallowed laugh when a knee goes somewhere stupid. Ordinary sounds like the quiet of someone concentrating. That quiet is not a failure of atmosphere. It is the body doing maths. Heat, pressure, timing. The second you plaster music over that, you interrupt the only person in the room who knows the actual score.

There is a particular cruelty in how early this starts. First times. New people. The nights when nobody wants to look inexperienced. The soundtrack arrives as proof of fluency. Look how easy I am. Look how good this is. Look how little work you will have to do to understand me. It is a kindness that backfires. He learns the wrong language. You get tired of translating yourself into a version that sells.

Then later, with someone who might actually be paying attention, the habit is still in the mouth. The noise comes out before the feeling does. Like saying thank you before the plate has landed.

Stopping it is less glamorous than it sounds. You do not need a manifesto. You need to let a few seconds exist without covering them. If nothing is happening yet, let nothing happen out loud. If something is happening, let the sound be late. Late is the tell that it is real. The performed version is always early. It is trying to create the moment instead of reporting it.

That can feel exposed. Of course it can. Silence makes a person visible. A real sound makes a person visible too, just in a different outfit. There is a reason people reach for the theatrical version. It is armour with reverb.

The humour is that the armour fools almost nobody. He may not have the vocabulary for why the night felt off. He still felt it. Bodies clock performance even when brains are busy being flattered. There is a tightness in fake sound. A brightness. A little too much air in the wrong place. It is the same feeling as a laugh that does not belong to the joke.

And it kills filthy talk as well, which is a shame, because filthy talk is useful when it is specific. “That” is hot. “Harder” is hot. A paragraph of cinema moaning is just weather. It takes up the space where a real instruction could have lived. If the night needs direction, the soundtrack is vandalism.

There is a balance worth keeping. This is not an argument for lying there like a sock. Dead quiet can be its own performance, the opposite costume, I am too cool to be affected. That is also a script. The point is not to become mute. The point is to stop renting your voice out to a genre.

Try this on a night that already has enough safety in it to bear a small experiment. Drop the extra noise for five minutes. Keep the hands. Keep the pace. Let the breath do the reporting. If a sound wants out, let it be the unpretty one. If nothing wants out, let the room be a room. Watch what his body does when it stops getting a laugh track. Some men get lost. That is information. Some men slow down and actually look. That is better information.

If he asks whether you are all right because you have gone quieter, that is not a crisis. That is a man noticing the edit changed. You can say you are here. You can say it is good. You can say keep going. What you do not need to do is turn the volume back up to reassure him that the scene is still a scene.

The serious bit, the one under the joke, is that a lot of people have been praised for being easy to fuck and not for being easy to read. Easy to fuck often means generous with evidence. Sounds, faces, the whole complimentary package. Easy to read means he might have to work with the truth, including the bits where you need more time, a hand, a different speed, or a break that does not come with a smile.

Real sound is part of that truth. It is feedback. It is also a kind of selfishness, the healthy kind. The noise comes out because it happened to you, not because the room required proof.

There will still be loud nights. Good. Loud is excellent when it has a cause. There will be nights that sound like a fight with the mattress. Also good. What can go is the preloaded audio, the one that starts at the first decent kiss and continues on a loop until somebody comes or somebody gives up.

If it feels fake in the mouth, it is landing fake in the room as well. That line is not poetry. It is acoustics. You can hear the join. He can feel the join even if he smiles through it. The body you are actually in does not need a backing track. It needs time, a bit of honesty, and enough quiet to tell the difference between being desired and being entertained.

Let the breath go first. Let the ugly sound follow if it wants to. Let the theatrical one take itself home.

The night gets better when it stops sounding like it is trying to get renewed for another season.

  • Aftercare Is Still The Sex

The night does not end when he comes. That is the bit a lot of people pretend not to know.

There is this habit of treating the orgasm like a full stop. Heat, rhythm, the usual beautiful mess, then a sudden administrative silence, as if the body has filed the paperwork and gone home. Water would help. A hand would help. One ugly sentence would help. Instead the room gets that emptied out feeling, the one where the skin is still doing the job and the rest of the evening has already left the building.

It looks small from the outside. It is not small in the body.

Aftercare is a soft word for a serious thing. People hear it and picture robes, playlists, a tray of something expensive. That version exists if anyone wants it. Most nights need far less theatre. A glass of water. A palm on a back. Stay here a minute. That was a lot. You all right? Even a stupid observation about the neighbour’s bin night will do, because the point is not poetry. The point is that somebody is still in the room.

Sex turns the volume up. Heart rate, breath, the particular kind of attention that makes a person feel looked at and wanted at the same time. Then the volume drops. Chemicals move. The brave version of everyone gets quieter. That drop is normal. What happens in the drop is the part that decides whether the night felt like closeness or like being used politely.

The body keeps score in a way the mouth sometimes will not admit. It notices if the hands vanish. It notices if the talking stops the second the useful part is over. It notices if it is left buzzing and half naked next to someone who has already become a warm object with a pulse. Safety is not a speech. Safety is whether anyone stays.

This is why the quiet after can sting even when the sex was fine. Fine is not the same as finished. A person can come and still feel oddly exposed, a bit stupid, a bit too seen. That is the window where a hand on the hip does more work than another round. That is also the window where a phone screen feels like a small insult, even if nobody meant it that way.

There is humour in it, because of course there is. The same man who had a lot to say on the way in can become a closed parish the moment he is done. All that commentary. All that I have been thinking about this. Then the credits. House lights. Please make your own way to the exit. It is funny until the third time, when the pattern stops looking like tiredness and starts looking like a policy.

Tired is allowed. Overwhelmed is allowed. Not being a talker is allowed. None of that requires a vanishing act. A quiet person can still pass a glass of water. A shy person can still keep an arm where it was. The difference is presence. Presence does not need a monologue. It needs not leaving.

For women who actually like sex, this gap is louder. The night often still has miles in it. The skin is still interested. The room is still hot. Then the temperature of the attention changes and the body has to decide, quickly, whether it is safe to stay open or whether it should start putting the shutters down. That decision does not wait for a relationship meeting. It happens in the ten minutes after, in the stupid ordinary minutes nobody puts on a playlist for.

Aftercare is still the sex because that is when the nervous system votes.

If the vote goes well, the night settles. Breathing evens out. The filthy part and the human part get to sit next to each other without one of them fleeing. A person can laugh. A person can ask for a jumper. A person can admit they feel a bit wrecked and mean it as a compliment. The body files the evening under wanted.

If the vote goes badly, the same night gets rewritten. Not always as drama. Often as a faint off note. He was keen. Then he was gone. The pleasure was real and the ending made it feel cheaper than it was. Next time the body arrives with a little less trust and a little more performance. That is how good sex turns into careful sex. Careful sex is exhausting.

None of this means every encounter needs a debrief and a snack plate. A quickie can still have aftercare. It just looks like a hand on the waist while the clothes come back on, or a look that says that happened and I am still here. Morning sex can have it too. Less plot, more water, a lazy sentence before the kettle. The form changes. The job does not.

The practical version is almost embarrassingly easy, which is why it is strange how often it gets skipped.

Water first. Throats are dry. Heads go light. People forget they are animals with basic needs once the interesting part is over. A glass on the side before anyone starts is not romance. It is competence.

Then contact that does not ask for a new scene. Not immediately climbing back on. Not immediately turning away either. Skin to skin for a minute. A thumb drawing nothing in particular. If sweat makes that less charming, a towel and a laugh will do. The laugh matters. It tells the room the body is allowed to be a body, not a finished product.

Then one ugly sentence. Ugly meaning ordinary. Not a review. Not a speech about connection. Something that could survive daylight. Come here. That got me. Do not move yet. You look properly done in. I liked that. Even I need a second. The sentence is a bridge. It stops the drop from becoming a hole.

What does not count is the performance of care with no follow through. Asking “was that all right” while already reaching for the jeans. Kissing a forehead on the way to the bathroom and staying in there long enough for the moment to die. Saying stay, then scrolling. The body can tell the difference between a gesture and a person.

There is also the version where aftercare gets treated as a female hobby, like it is emotional unpaid labour that happens to take place in a bed. That is lazy. Anyone who just had another person in their mouth, on their chest, around them, owes a little staying. Intensity is a two person weather system. The one who wants the heat also owns the landing.

Asking for it can feel awkward, which is part of why people do not. It sounds like needing something. It is needing something. That is allowed. Sex makes people need things. Water. Reassurance. A minute. Pretending otherwise is how nights end with both people slightly lonely two feet apart.

The ask can be small enough to survive a proud mood. Stay there. Can you just hold that. I go quiet after, do not take it as a cue to disappear. I want a minute before phones. Put it in the room before the clothes come off if that is easier. People behave better when the expectation is not a surprise.

It is worth noticing what happens when someone is good at this. They do not turn into a different species. They just do not treat the ending like a fire exit. The filthy talk can stop without the person stopping. They can be a bit useless with words and still get the glass, still keep the arm, still look at the face instead of the ceiling. It feels adult in the unglamorous way. Like somebody knows the night has more than one act.

It is also worth noticing what the absence trains. A person who is always left in the drop starts doing the work alone. Joking first. Getting up first. Making the silence look like it was their idea. That can look like confidence. Sometimes it is just speed. Getting out before the feeling arrives. That is a reasonable defence. It is also how a sex life gets efficient and a bit cold.

Serious bit, then, without the brochure language. Aftercare is part of consent’s longer shadow. Consent is not only the yes at the start. It is how a person is treated when they are at their least armoured. Open legs and an open nervous system are not the same thing, but they often arrive together. Leaving someone in that state with no landing is not villainy every time. It is still careless. Careless adds up.

There can be medical plainness here too. Some bodies shake. Some people cry without it meaning the sex was tragic. Some get suddenly cold. Some feel a wave of sadness that has no neat story attached. That is a known comedown, not a crisis by default. What turns it into a worse night is being alone with it while the other person treats the mattress like a platform they have finished using.

A joke helps if it is kind. Not a joke at the expense of the feeling. A joke that says we are both a bit ridiculous and still here. Humour is aftercare when it keeps the dignity in the room. Mockery is not. There is a difference between that was feral and wow you actually need a cuddle, weird. One lands as intimacy. The other lands as a flinch.

Toys, quickies, long nights, first times, the hundredth time in the same bed. The principle does not change. If the sex asked the body to open, the ending should help it close without slamming. That can take two minutes. It can take twenty. The clock is not the measure. The measure is whether anyone is still treating the other person like a person.

For the ones who go quiet after they come, the work is not becoming chatty on command. The work is not disappearing. Learn a small script if the mouth goes empty. Water. Come here. That was good. Stay. Four words and a glass will rescue more nights than another position from a video.

For the ones left in the quiet, the work is not swallowing it forever because the sex itself was decent. Decent sex with a poor landing still teaches the body something. Say the sentence. Move toward the contact. Or, if the pattern is fixed and the man is always a monk in the after, believe the pattern. People tell the truth in the minutes they think no longer count.

The credits do not get to roll just because he finished. The scene is still going. Skin, breath, the odd tenderness that shows up when there is nothing left to prove. That is not extra. That is the rest of it.

Water. A hand. One ugly sentence.

The quiet bit is where the body decides if it felt safe. If it did, the night keeps its heat in the memory. If it did not, the memory keeps the heat and adds a little frost around the edge. Most people can live with imperfect sex. Fewer want to keep collecting endings that feel like being left in a room that was full a moment ago.

Stay for the drop. That is the whole article, really. The rest is just saying it long enough that it sounds as ordinary as it is.

  • He Goes Quiet After Coming

He can talk for Britain on the way in. Filthy little novelist. Full sentences. Timing. Jokes that land right against the neck. He will tell you exactly what he wants to do and then he will do half of it and describe the other half like it is already happening. Chatty. Present. Almost impressive.

    Then he comes.

And that is it. Personality clocks off. Body stays behind like a coat on a chair. The mouth that would not shut up ten minutes ago has joined a monastery. Classic.

It is one of the great male mysteries and it never gets less funny. Not tragic. Funny. A bit rude. Slightly erotic in the way unfinished business always is. You are still warm. Still in it. Still halfway through a thought that started with his voice in your ear. He is already somewhere else. Same bed. Different postcode.

The build up is never the problem. That part he understands. Wanting is a language he speaks fluently. He will text. He will hover. He will find reasons to stand too close in the kitchen. He will do that low laugh that means the evening has a destination. By the time clothes are on the floor he is generous with words. Good boy energy mixed with a bit of smug. He likes being wanted and he likes saying so. Fine. More than fine. That version of him is good company.

The switch is what does the head in. Not even a fade. A cut. One second he is gripping and muttering and making the kind of noise that would get a noise complaint in a thinner wall flat. Next second he is a warm statue with a pulse. Eyes soft. Brain emptied. Conversation skills packed into a bag and left in the hall.

Some of them go for the roll. Classic geography. Face in the pillow. One arm flung out like he has been shot, but politely. Some stare at the ceiling like it owes them an explanation. Some reach for the phone with a speed that should be studied. Not even a full minute. Thumb already moving. As if the universe might have sent a notification more interesting than the person still breathing next to them.

The phone is its own punchline. All that urgency. All that focus. Then suddenly emails exist again. Football scores exist again. A group chat that has been silent for six hours suddenly requires his full attention. You can watch the man leave the room without standing up.

There is a scientific explanation if you want one, and people always do, because calling it what it is feels too simple. Prolactin. Refractory period. Nervous system swapping shifts. The engine that was screaming for contact now wants a dark room and no homework. Fair enough. Bodies are messy little machines. They peak and then they sulk. That part is not personal.

    The manners are personal.

Because he can still say something. He managed an entire dirty monologue twenty minutes ago. He can manage water. A hand. A stupid comment. Anything that proves the person who wanted in is still in the building. Instead there is this thick quiet, like someone muted the film and forgot to tell the other actor.

And it is specific, the quiet. Not peaceful. Not afterglow. It is the quiet of a man who has completed a task. Tick. Done. Next. Except there is no next. There is just you, still humming, and him, already halfway to sleep or scrolling or thinking about whether he left the bathroom light on.

The sexy part, if we are being honest, is the contrast. That is the hook. He was so in it. Mouthy. Keen. Eyes on you like you were the only plot twist in his week. That version is hot. The drop after is what makes the whole thing feel like a trick. Not a cruel one. A sloppy one. Like he spent the budget on the first half of the night and hoped nobody would notice the ending was underwritten.

Some of them try a single sentence. That was nice. You good. Tired now. All of which are technically English and spiritually nothing. You good is the worst. It is not a question. It is a full stop wearing a wig. It means I have finished my bit. Please do not require additional personality.

Others go tender for ninety seconds and then the shutters come down. A kiss on the shoulder. A squeeze. Then gone. As if affection has a timer and it ran out with the orgasm. Which is a hell of a business model.

There is a theory floating about that the quiet is shame. That some of them feel exposed the second they are not performing hunger. Wanting is allowed. Having had is complicated. The second it is over they remember they have a job and a mother and a reputation and suddenly the sweaty, swearing, begging version of themselves needs to be filed away. So they go blank. Easier than staying in the room as a person who just made a noise like that.

Maybe. Some nights it tracks. The ones who were filthiest on the way in often go the quietest after. Like the mouth needs to atone. Ridiculous. Also very them.

Another theory is simpler and ruder. He got what he came for. The conversation was part of the getting. Once the getting is got, the conversation has no job. That one stings a bit because it is occasionally true and nobody likes a true thing that is also unflattering. Not all of them. Enough of them.

The confusing bit is that the same man can be clingy in the abstract. Wants closeness. Says sex makes him feel close. Then the closeness arrives and he treats it like a draft. He will tell you, on a Tuesday, that physical stuff is how he shows he is in it. Friday night he shows he is in it for eleven minutes and then becomes furniture. So which is it. Is the sex the language or is the sex the full stop.

This is where they get properly baffling. They will insist they are simple. Hungry, straightforward, not overthinkers. Then they perform this tiny vanishing act that takes a seminar to unpack. Simple men do not evaporate after coming. Simple men stay in the bed they just made a mess of and act like a person.

The ones who stay are a different species and they spoil you for the monks. They talk rubbish. They laugh at the awkward bit. They get water without being asked. They keep a hand somewhere that is not a demand. They do not treat the orgasm like the credits. Those ones make the quiet ones look even funnier, which is saying something.

Because it is funny. That is the part that saves it. You lie there with your heart still doing laps and he is conducting a vow of silence like he joined an order between the second and third thrust. The dignity of it. The commitment. He could not keep a secret in a pub if you paid him. He will tell a stranger his whole Sunday. But post climax he becomes a locked drawer.

There is also the sleep fake. Special category. Eyes shut too fast. Breathing a little too performed. Not asleep. Hiding. The body is heavy and satisfied and the social energy has left the chat. So he pretends the night is over in case someone asks him to be present for the last ten percent. Cowardice, but soft cowardice. The kind you can almost forgive if the sex was decent.

If the sex was mid, the quiet is louder. That is just physics. A good ending can carry a bit of mute. A mediocre ending plus mute is just a man who has run out of material. You can feel the difference. One is a body cooling down. The other is a performance that did not have an encore planned.

What makes it sexy, still, against all odds, is the animal of it. The fact that he can be so in his body that language falls out of him. That part is not nothing. There is something honest in the collapse. He wanted. He took. He emptied. The lights dimmed because the fuse blew. Fine. Bodies do that. The erotic leftover is that you got to watch the whole system overload and then sit in the dark with the evidence.

The problem is he forgets there is another system in the bed that has not blown yet. Different wiring. Longer fuse. Sometimes the wanting stays after the finishing. Sometimes the skin still wants a voice attached to it. Not a speech. Not a debrief. Just proof that the person who was so interested in getting in has not already left.

He does not owe a TED talk. Nobody sensible is asking for that. A grunt with warmth in it would do. A laugh. Your name. Anything that is not the emotional equivalent of putting his coat on indoors.

Instead, silence. Thick enough to lean on. The radiator ticks. A car goes past. He swallows. You can hear him thinking about nothing, which is impressive in its own way. All that blood went south and took the chat with it.

People dress this up as post nut clarity, as if he has accessed some higher truth and the truth is quiet. Please. Most of the time the clarity is just that he is tired and slightly stunned and does not want to accidentally say something affectionate he cannot stand by in the morning. So he says nothing. Safer. Colder. Very efficient.

The morning version is its own sequel. If the night quiet was a fade, the morning can be a rewrite. Suddenly he can talk again. Coffee. Plans. Work. As if the mute button was location specific and only worked in the dark. Daylight restores the software. Night him remains an unsolved file.

That is the creature in full. Nocturnal mouth. Post climax monk. Breakfast conversationalist. Three men sharing one body and none of them thought to leave a note.

It would be easier if it was always selfish. Then you could file it and move on. Sometimes it is shy. Sometimes it is spent. Sometimes it is a boy who never got told that the last ten minutes count as part of the sex. He thinks the event ends when he does. Like a goal. Ball in net. Walk off the pitch. No idea the other team is still on the field stretching.

So the quiet sits there, ridiculous and a bit hot and faintly insulting, and you learn the shape of it. You learn which ones go blank because they are shy and which ones go blank because they are done. You learn that a hand in the dark is a full paragraph. You learn that the chatty ones are not automatically the kind ones. Talk is cheap on the way in. Talk after is the tell.

He will do it again. Of course he will. The build up will be lovely. The mouth will come back for the wanting. That part he rehearses. The leaving he does on instinct. And every time it is the same small comedy. A man who can narrate a whole seduction cannot manage a sentence once he has got what the seduction was for.

The body stays. Warm. Heavy. Harmless. The person who was in it has stepped out for air and forgotten the way back. Classic. Infuriating. Weirdly intimate, because you are the only one who watched him go.

You can lie there and find it funny. You should. It is funny. A grown man silenced by his own nervous system like a laptop that overheated. All that swagger. All that talk. Then nothing. Just breath and skin and the faint sense that if you asked him what year it was he would need a minute.

That is the article. That is the creature. Chatty on the way in. Monk on the way out. And somehow still convinced he is not confusing at all.

  • He Needs It To Feel Close

He will not say he missed anyone.

He will, however, appear in a doorway at half ten with that look. The one that pretends it is casual. The one that has already decided the evening has a destination. Jacket still on. Voice a bit lower than it was in the group chat. Hands already doing the talking his mouth refuses to.

That is the whole trick, really. Sex as the translator. The act doing the job of a sentence he will not risk out loud.

It is almost impressive, if you squint. He can be inside someone and still not manage I like you. He can come and call it closeness. He can go quiet afterwards and believe the quiet is intimate, not empty. A whole emotional life stuffed into twenty minutes and a bit of breath on a neck. Then he wonders why the room feels unfinished.

Here is the confusing bit. He is not always cold. That would be easier. Cold is honest. This type is warm in the specific places that do not require language. Mouth, hands, the way he pulls a person in like the body has already agreed to a conversation the brain is still dodging. Tender when it is dark. Capable of being properly filthy and oddly gentle in the same stretch of minutes. Then morning arrives and he is a locked cabinet again. Asks if there is coffee. Does not ask how anyone slept. The closeness clocked off with the orgasm.

It would be funny if it did not keep working on people. Because it does work, a bit. Bodies are not stupid. Skin against skin still does something. A hand at the back of a head still lands. Being wanted in that blunt, physical way can feel like being chosen, even when the words never turn up to confirm it. That is the trap. The body says yes. The morning says, hang on.

He skips the talking that would make the act land. That is the line. Not that he will not talk at all. He will talk. About work. About a mate who is being an idiot. About a film. He will talk right up to the edge of the useful stuff and then reach for a zip instead. As if the useful stuff is dangerous and the zip is safe. Backwards, that. The zip is the bit that actually leaves a person open. The sentence is just air.

Watch him try to say something real and you can see the panic behind the eyes. Not big panic. Small. The kind that makes a man suddenly very interested in someone’s mouth so he does not have to use his own for anything risky. Kissing as a diversion. Sex as a cover band for feelings he will not put on the main stage.

And it is sexy, that is the annoying part. Of course it is. A man who wants someone badly enough to skip the speech can feel like heat. No preamble. No committee meeting about what it means. Just the weight of him and the knowledge that this is the only language he trusts. There is a charge in that. Always has been. The problem is what he thinks the charge is paying for.

He thinks the orgasm is the paragraph. He thinks if it was good, the closeness has been delivered, signed, filed. He does not understand that for a lot of people the good bit needs a place to sit afterwards. A stupid comment. A hand that stays. The unglamorous proof that he is still in the room as a person, not just as a pulse. Without that, the sex can be excellent and still feel like it happened in a lift that opened on the wrong floor.

The after is where he gives himself away. Some of them go soft and sweet and ruin the theory. Those ones exist. This one goes quiet like he has completed a task. Not cruel. Just finished. Scrolls. Stretches. Makes a joke that is a little too light for the thing that just happened. The body is still warm and he is already halfway back to being a flatmate of his own feelings.

Ask him what he meant by it and he looks vaguely betrayed. Meant by what. It was sex. It was nice. Why does it have to be a press conference. Which would be a fair point if he had not just used the sex to say the thing he will not say. You cannot employ an interpreter and then deny there was a message.

This is why they are such confusing creatures. He can want someone in a way that is almost hungry, almost honest, and still treat the honesty like a stain. He can need to be close so badly it comes out as urgency, then flinch when closeness asks to stay for breakfast. He will chase the feeling and then act surprised that the feeling has a person attached.

There is a version of this that is almost sweet, which makes it worse. He was probably not raised to say I feel small today. He was raised to be fine. Fine does not get to ask for a hand on the chest and a bit of quiet that is not sex. Fine gets to get hard and call that a personality. So the body becomes the only approved channel. Want becomes thrust. Care becomes how carefully he takes someone’s clothes off. Love, if that word is even in the building, becomes how he looks at a mouth like it might save him.

It is not that he does not feel it. That is the old lazy story and it is mostly rubbish. A lot of them feel it so much they have to smuggle it in through the bedroom because the front door is alarmed. The act is not empty. It is overcrowded. Too many unsaid things riding in on one physical moment. No wonder it sometimes feels rushed. He is trying to move a whole sofa through a cat flap.

The talking he skips is not a thesis. Nobody needs a PowerPoint on attachment styles at midnight. It is the small stuff. I kept thinking about you on the way over. I like how you do that. Stay a bit. That was more than just getting off for me. Tiny sentences. Cheap. Effective. He treats them like they would cheapen the heat, when they are the thing that stops the heat from evaporating the second he pulls out.

Without them, sex becomes a very pretty shrug.

There is also the practical comedy of it. He wants to feel close, so he goes straight for the part that requires the least vocabulary and the most assumption. Then he is faintly wounded if the other person is not telepathic. He did the intimacy. Why is there still a gap. Because he performed closeness and did not build it. Different jobs. One is a scene. The other is a habit.

A person can be on their back, properly into it, making those sounds that are not for show, and still notice the gap. That is the sexy-and-sad overlap he never accounts for. Pleasure does not cancel the question. Sometimes it sharpens it. The better it is, the louder the silence afterwards. If this is how he says it, what exactly is he saying.

Some nights it is just sex and that is fine. Brilliant, even. Not every shag needs a subplot. The issue is when he only knows one setting. When every bit of need gets poured into the same mould. Horny and lonely come out wearing the same face. Then he leaves someone to sort the recycling of his feelings while he has a shower.

He is good at the physical sentence, a lot of the time. That should be said. Hands that pay attention. A mouth that is not in a hurry for once. The particular focus of a man who is safer doing than declaring. It can be filthy in a way that feels like praise. Looked at like that, the whole thing is a compliment he is too shy to put in English. Looked at in the morning light, it is also a bit of a cop out.

The loop is stupid and very human. He cannot feel close until it happens. The other person cannot let it land until there is some sign he will still be there when the sweat dries. So he pushes for the act to create the feeling, and the missing words stop the feeling from sticking. Both of them walk away slightly mis-translated.

He will swear he is not bad at talking. He talks all day. Emails. Banter. A whole personality built out of being easy. Easy is not the same as open. Easy is the joke. Open is the bit after the joke where he admits the reason he came round was not just the obvious. That second bit is where a lot of them fall down the stairs.

There is a tell, if anyone is collecting them. He gets more intense when the week has been bad. Not more verbal. More physical. A harder kiss. A tighter hold. Sex as mood regulation. Sex as I had a shit day and I do not have another way to put my body next to someone without making it weird. It is not nothing. It is just a blunt instrument. Sometimes a blunt instrument still feels good. Sometimes it leaves a bruise that is not quite on the skin.

The hilarious part, and it is hilarious once the sting fades, is how proud he can be of the silence. As if not needing to say it makes it purer. More masculine. More real. No. It makes it unfinished. A film that cuts before the last scene and calls the cut artistic. Some of us like credits. Some of us like to know the actor is still employed.

He treats sex like it can carry the whole relationship on its back. Sex is strong. It is not that strong. It cannot do the job of a text that says get home safe. It cannot replace the unsexy check-in. It cannot be the only proof that someone is not just a convenient warmth. When it is asked to be all of that, it starts to feel heavy. Even when it is hot. Especially when it is hot.

Because the heat is not the problem. The heat is often excellent. That is why this type keeps getting away with it. If he was bad in bed and mute, the mystery would solve itself. He is often good enough that the mute feels like a style choice rather than a limitation. Style choice. Limitation. Same coat, different lining.

A useful man, in the end, can do both. Can want someone in that low, specific way and still find a sentence that does not kill the mood. Can let the act be filthy and let the talk be plain. Can need closeness and not make one body responsible for an entire inner life. That man exists. He is just not the one standing in the doorway pretending the look is enough.

This one needs the act to feel close and then uses the act as evidence that closeness has occurred. Circular. Neat. Wrong. Closeness is what is left when nobody is performing. The bit where he could say something small and true and instead reaches for a phone. The bit where a person is still half undressed and already doing the maths on what any of it meant.

He wants the feeling. He just wants it without the risk of being understood.

That is the whole animal. Hungry. Shy. Convinced that a good shag is a paragraph with a full stop. It is not. It is a clause. The sentence still needs the rest of the words. Until he finds them, he will keep translating himself through skin and wondering why the other person keeps asking what he meant.

He meant it. That is the joke. He just said it in a language that disappears when the lights come on.
