  • Try Giving Directions Out Loud

The room does not need a screenplay. It needs a few ordinary words said at the right time.

    Left. Harder. Slower. There.

That is the whole trick, and people still treat it like public speaking. They wait. They hint. They make a little noise and hope he translates it into a postcode. Then they wonder why the night keeps missing the turning.

I used to do the polite version. A shift of the hip. A hand placed like a suggestion. A moan that could have meant anything from yes to please stop remixing what was actually working. Men are not psychic. Some of them are not even paying that much attention. They are busy with their own plot. If you do not put a sentence in the air, they will fill the gap with whatever they last watched, last tried, or last decided must be impressive.

Porn language makes people shy because it does not belong in a real mouth. Nobody sounds natural saying the lines they have only ever heard through laptop speakers. So they say nothing. Silence feels safer than sounding daft. The problem is silence gets read as permission to keep going exactly as they are.

Plain instructions make people useful. That is not a vibe. That is a fact.

There is a serious reason this matters and it is not about being a director in cheap lingerie. A lot of bad sex is just miscommunication wearing confidence. He thinks faster means better. He thinks changing position every forty seconds means he is generous. He thinks the sound you made two minutes ago still applies now that he has moved two inches and lost the plot. You know what you need. Your body is not being mysterious. Your manners are.

Women get trained early to protect the mood. Do not make him self conscious. Do not seem demanding. Do not kill the atmosphere by turning a kiss into a briefing. So we swallow the note and hope he stumbles onto the right thing, like desire is a lucky dip. Sometimes he does. Often he does not. Then everybody performs a version of having a nice time and the actual nice time never clocks in.

I am not interested in that anymore. High drive does not mean grateful for whatever lands. It means I notice when it is rubbish. It means I would rather say one blunt sentence than spend twenty minutes being almost there.

The words can be ugly. They should be. Pretty talk is how people hide. “A bit to the left” is not poetry and that is why it works. “Stay” is not a monologue. “Do not stop” only works if he understands that do not stop includes do not get creative. Most of them hear encouragement and take it as a prompt to improve the scene. They add speed. They add a new angle. They add a hand in a place that was fine being ignored. The minute that was building falls over.

Say it like you are giving directions to a taxi. Not rude. Not theatrical. Just clear enough that the driver does not sail past the house.

    There. Like that. Keep that.

If he is in his ego, those words will sting. That is useful information. A man who cannot take a simple instruction in bed is telling you how he handles the rest of you. He wants to be good. He does not want to be guided. Those are not the same hobby.

The funny part is how small the fix is and how dramatic people act about it. You would think asking for a slower pace was a legal document. You would think “harder” was a personality change. It is a verb. Use it. The body already knows the difference between almost and yes. The mouth is the last thing to catch up because the mouth is worried about sounding like a manager.

I have watched competent, charming men go oddly fragile the second a woman becomes specific. They were fine when the feedback was a noise. A noise can be filed under I am doing well. A sentence can be filed under I was not quite doing well. That flinch is not always vanity. Sometimes it is panic. He has been told sex is something he should already know. Direction sounds like a report card.

You can make it easier without watering it down. Touch while you talk. Put his hand where you want it and say the word at the same time. People hear better when their skin is involved. Do it early, before the whole thing has a plot he is proud of. The later you leave it, the more it feels like a correction. Early is just part of the weather.

Try it in daylight first if the dark makes you cowardly. On the sofa. In the kitchen. A sentence about what you like when nobody is mid performance. “I go quiet when it is good, so if I say stay I mean stay.” That one line saves an entire later argument with his improvisation.

Ordinary words also protect you from the script. Once you start performing dirty talk you do not mean, you are acting. Acting is tiring. It also teaches him the wrong play. If you moan like a clip because you think that is the done thing, he will chase the clip. Then you are both in a scene neither of you is actually in. Your actual voice is filthier than you think, not because it is shocking, but because it is true. Truth has a heat fake language cannot copy.

There is a balance here and it is worth getting right. Direction is not a running commentary. You do not need to narrate every breath. That turns the bed into a satnav with a headache. Say the thing when the thing changes. Say it when he is close to useful and about to wander off. Say it when you want more and he has started treating your body like a suggestion box.

    Left.

    Wait.

    Again.

    Those are complete sentences.

People worry it will make them sound experienced in a way that gets them labelled. Let them label. Reputation is other people’s paperwork. Wanting sex and knowing how you like it is not a scandal. It is literacy. The double standard only works if you agree to whisper. Say the word out loud and the spell thins out. You are allowed to have taste. You are allowed to have a map.

The other fear is that talking will break the spell. Sometimes it does, and that is not a tragedy. If one honest instruction kills the mood, the mood was made of glass. Better to find that out than to keep padding around a man who can only function if nobody tells him the truth. Good sex can survive a sentence. In fact good sex often starts at the sentence. The air clears. He stops guessing. You stop bracing.

I like the moment after you have said it and he actually does it. Not as a treat. As a response. Something in the room drops its shoulders. You can feel the difference between a man performing skill and a man paying attention. Attention is the hot part. Technique is just the tools. Plenty of people have tools. Fewer people listen.

If he listens, reward that in the same language. Yes. That. More of that. Positive direction is still direction. It stops him panicking that every word out of your mouth is a complaint. Men are simple in this one way. They like knowing they have landed. Tell them when they have. Then tell them not to leave the landing.

If he does not listen, do not escalate into a seminar. Repeat it once, clearer. If he still treats it like optional colour, stop the scene. Starting is not a contract to continue. A clean no in a warm room is better than pushing through out of manners. Manners ruin nights. They also train both of you. You learn to shrink. He learns that your words are decoration.

That is the serious bit I will not joke off. A lot of us were taught to keep the peace with our bodies. Make it nice. Do not embarrass him. Get it over with if it has already begun. That is how you end up expert in other people’s pleasure and amateur in your own. Saying left and harder is a small rebellion against that training. It is also basic safety. Your mouth is part of consent, not just your nodding.

Things to try are embarrassingly practical.

Pick three words before you go out and decide they are allowed in the room. Stay. Slower. There. Use them even if you feel self conscious the first time. Self conscious passes. A missed orgasm hangs about.

Try saying it into his ear rather than up at the ceiling. It lands differently. Less of a note from management. More of a secret with instructions attached.

Try putting his name in it if he drifts. Names pull people back into their bodies. So does eye contact, if you can stand it. If you cannot, the hand on the back of his neck will do.

Try directing the pause. Not everything needs more. Some nights need wait. The wait is where a lot of men get itchy. They think stillness is a failure of effort. Teach them that stillness can be the effort.

Try directing after he has finished if you have not. This is where people go shy again, because his timeline has always been treated like the house style. It is not. If you want his mouth, say mouth. If you want his hand, put it there. If you want five quiet minutes and then another go, say that too. Wanting more is not needy. Neediness is the apology you wrap around the wanting. Skip the wrap.

You will get it wrong sometimes. You will say too much. You will laugh. He will go left when you meant the other left. Fine. Sex is not a spelling test. The point is not perfect copy. The point is refusing to be a mystery in your own bed.

I do not think confidence has to sound like a speech. Confidence can sound like a woman in a flat in Essex telling a man to stay where he is because that is the first useful thing he has done in ten minutes. No candle. No essay. No performance of being easygoing. Just taste, said out loud.

The ones who can hear it become better. Not in a project way. In a present way. The ones who cannot will show you quickly. That saves time. Time is underrated when you actually like sex. Life is too short for another night of almost, another polite soundtrack, another man convinced that changing pace is the same as paying attention.

Use ordinary words. Let them be a bit blunt. Let them be a bit funny if that is how your mouth works. Serious does not have to mean solemn. You can laugh and still mean stay. You can be filthy and still be precise. Precision is not the enemy of heat. Guessing is.

    Left. Harder. Slower. There.

Say it. Then see who is actually in the room with you.

  • Wanting More Is Not Needy

The first round can be a whole evening for some people. Lights, clothes, the little performance of arriving in the same bed with the same idea. For a lot of men it has a neat ending. He comes. The night files itself under done. The body goes loose and the diary in his head closes.

That is not how every body works.

Wanting more is not a character defect. It is not a hint that you are about to ask him to meet your parents. It is not a loyalty test dressed up as horniness. It is a body that has not finished with the evening. Heat does not always spend itself on his timetable. Sometimes it has barely stood up.

Neediness is a different animal. Neediness is the apology you attach to a want so nobody thinks you are too much. It is the joke you make at your own expense before you have even asked. It is the quick, bright laugh that says ignore me, I was only kidding, please do not look at the fact I am still here and still interested. Appetite does not do that dance. Appetite just wants another go.

Women get trained early to treat desire like a volume knob that should stay polite. Want it a bit. Want it when he wants it. Want it in a way that still looks tasteful in the morning. Want it once, then behave. A second round has a smell of excess about it, as if you failed to be satisfied by the official programme and are now making a scene in the foyer.

Men do not get that lecture in the same font. A man who wants it again is healthy, lucky, still in the game. A woman who wants it again is hungry in the way people use hungry when they mean inconvenient. Same act. Different press release.

The serious part sits under the joke. If you have ever swallowed the rest of the night because you did not want to look keen, you already know the cost. You lie there with a body that is still switched on and a mouth that has decided to be well mannered. You tell yourself it was good enough. You tell yourself he is tired. You tell yourself asking would make the air weird. Then you carry the leftover heat home and spend it on nothing, or on being faintly annoyed at a man who never got the chance to be any better than he was.

There is nothing dignified about that. There is only the old habit of making yourself smaller so someone else does not have to rise to you.

Humour helps, because the situation is often ridiculous. You can have had perfectly decent sex and still feel like someone changed the channel too early. He is glowing like a man who has completed a task. You are lying next to the task, thinking the plot had another scene. He stretches. He reaches for water. He gets that soft, accomplished face. You are thinking about his mouth again, or his hands, or the fact that you were just getting started when he started writing the credits.

    Ask.

    Or take it.

Those are not the same move, and both are allowed.

Asking is clean. Another go. Stay there. I am not done. You do not need a speech about female desire through the ages. You do not need to wrap it in a compliment so his ego can bear the news that the evening still has a pulse. A short sentence in a warm room is plenty. If he looks startled, that is information. If he looks pleased, that is also information. If he looks put upon, you have learned something cheaper than staying the night to find out later.

Taking it is different. Taking it means you put a hand back on him. You kiss him like the conversation is not over. You climb on. You use your mouth. You make the next round happen with your body instead of a committee meeting. This only works when the first yes is still alive in the room. Consent does not clock out just because he finished, and it does not stay open just because you would like it to. Read him. If he is in it, keep going. If he has left the building, do not try to drag the building back by its shirt.

The myth is that wanting more means you did not get enough attention and are now chasing it with sex. Sometimes that is true. Sometimes people use another round to delay the quiet, or to keep a man from putting his personality back on and going home. That is worth being honest about, at least with yourself. Using sex as a doorstop is a different hobby. It feels like appetite until the morning, when it feels like you were bargaining.

Real appetite is simpler and slightly ruder. The body liked what happened and would like it to happen again. Maybe you did not come. Maybe you did and the first one just opened the shop. Maybe you like the way he is after he has already come once, slower, less of a performance, more of a person. Second rounds are often better for that reason. The urgency drops. The showing off drops. What is left is messier and, if he can bear to stay present, actually sexier.

A lot of rubbish gets talked about stamina as if it is a moral quality. It is not. Some men can go again and some men need a sandwich and a short religious experience. Fine. Biology is allowed. What is not fine is the idea that his limit is the official end of your night. His body has a recovery period. Yours might not. Those two facts can live in the same bed without anyone being greedy.

This is where things to try earn their keep.

Stay on him after he comes instead of rolling away out of politeness. Keep your mouth on his neck. Keep a hand moving, light, not as a demand, as a continuation. See whether he comes back into the room or whether he turns into warm furniture. That tells you more than a questionnaire.

If he is sensitive, change jobs rather than arguing with his nerves. Hands. Thighs. The slow, stupid luxury of not treating his orgasm like a fire alarm. Give it a minute. Then start again somewhere that is not a negotiation.

Use your own hand without making it a speech. If you are still close, finish. Let him watch or help or lie there amazed that the night did not end on his cue. A man who finds that threatening was never going to survive a woman with a pulse. A man who finds that hot has just been given a useful education.

Say the practical thing. I want you again. Not later. Now. If later is genuinely what his body can do, then later can be a plan rather than a brush off. There is a difference between I need twenty minutes and I would rather we pretended this was enough.

Try making the second round slower on purpose. Less performance. More of the thing that was working before he got competitive with himself. If he starts remixing the pace, stop him. Stay. That. The first round is where a lot of them show you their idea of sex. The second is where you find out if they can listen.

If you want him in your mouth after, want it plainly. If you want him to go down again, say so. People get shy about repeating an act as if repetition were proof of neediness. Repeating an act is how you get good at an act. Nobody calls a second drink needy unless they are trying to manage you.

The double standard will still turn up, even in a decent bed. You can feel it in the little joke. Insatiable. Bloody hell. You are going to kill me. Sometimes that is affection. Sometimes it is a soft way of saying please be less. Listen to the temperature of it. A man who is delighted and wrecked is one thing. A man who is keeping score of your hunger is another.

Reputation sits outside the room and tries to get in anyway. Easy. Too much. Always up for it. Those phrases are designed to make appetite look like a lack of standards. They are a trick. Standards live in who you choose, how you are treated, whether the sex is actually any good, and whether you can leave when it is not. How many times you want someone in one night does not decide your character. It decides whether you are still awake.

There is a serious kindness in not abandoning yourself mid evening. You do not owe the performance of being easily finished. You do not owe the pretty myth that good women are content with whatever they are given and then go quiet, grateful, small. Wanting more can be the most honest thing in the room. It says the body is still here. It says the night was not a transaction that closed when he got what he came for.

It can also be funny, and it should be allowed to be funny. There is something comic about two adults, half wrecked, having a tiny administrative meeting about whether the night is over. There is something comic about a man looking faintly betrayed that you have not joined him in the afterglow coma. There is something comic about the way people will discuss politics, rent, and their childhood wounds more bravely than they will say I would like you to touch me again.

    Say it anyway.

If he meets you there, the second round often has a different flavour. Less proving. More heat. The kind of sex that happens when nobody is still auditioning. If he does not meet you there, you have not made a fool of yourself. You have just been accurate. Accuracy gets called needy by people who were hoping you would not notice you wanted anything.

Appetite is just appetite. It can be casual. It can be concentrated on one person for a few hours and then go home on the night bus. It can be greedy in a way that is actually quite cheerful. What turns it sour is the shame people try to staple to it, and the habit of asking permission from an audience that is not even in the bed.

Another round is not a plea to be kept. It is not a five year plan. It is not proof you are desperate for closeness you did not get the first time, although sometimes closeness is part of what you want and that is allowed too. It is a body finishing its sentence.

Ask. Or take it. Stay in the room with yourself either way.

  • Be The One Who Starts It

Waiting is a terrible seduction strategy. It looks polite. It feels safe. It produces a lot of nights that are fine in the way lukewarm tea is fine. The script is old and still running. He starts it. She receives it. He risks the ask. She risks the reputation. He gets to look hungry. She gets to look chosen. On paper it is manners. In bed it is often just delay. The heat arrives, hangs about in the doorway, and then somebody’s courage clocks off and the whole thing becomes a negotiation with timing instead of a decision.

Initiation is not unladylike. That word has always been a costume anyway. Ladylike is what people say when they would like a woman to want things quietly enough that nobody has to deal with the wanting. It is a compliment that functions like a muzzle.

Starting it is simpler than the myth. A text. A hand. A look that does not pretend it landed by accident. Take the yes while it is still hot. Waiting to be selected is a slow way to get average sex, and average sex is how a high drive starts arguing with itself.

There is a serious reason women hesitate, and it is not mystery. It is paperwork. The double standard is still in the room even when everyone claims they are modern. A man who texts first is keen. A woman who texts first is keen as well, only the story attached to her is sloppier. Easy. Forward. A bit much. The words change with the decade. The flinch does not.

So a lot of people wait. They wait for him to catch up to a mood they have already been in for an hour. They wait for the second drink. They wait for the conversation to tilt, as if desire were a bus that only comes if you stand still at the stop looking unbothered. Meanwhile the body has already voted. The night is already happening in the head. The only thing missing is the sentence.

That delay has a cost. Heat is perishable. It does not sit neatly in a Tupperware until someone else feels brave. By the time he finally makes a move, the version of you that wanted him sharp and specific has been replaced by the version that will accept whatever arrives. That is how people end up in beds they are only half in.

Starting it is not a personality transplant. It does not require a speech or a trench coat or a line that sounds like it was written for a trailer. Most good initiation is ordinary. You up. Come over. I keep thinking about your mouth. Stay. The words can be plain. Plain is less embarrassing than poetry you do not mean.

The humour is that a lot of men act stunned, as if female appetite were a plot twist. They have been told they are the engine. Then the engine starts without them and they stand there looking pleased and slightly panicked, like a cat that has been offered a suitcase. Some of them love it immediately. The relief is visible. Somebody else brought the match. They can stop performing the whole hunt.

Some of them do not love it. That is useful information. A man who likes you hungry in theory and gets twitchy when the hunger has a voice is telling you the kind of night he wants. He wants desire that flatters him without ever taking the wheel. He wants to be the one who decides when the temperature rises. That is not chemistry. That is administration.

Rejection is the serious bit people skip when they talk about being bold. If you start it, you can be told no. You can be left on read. You can watch a mood die in real time. That sting is real. It is also the same sting he has been expected to live with since he was seventeen, except nobody called his wanting unseemly. The point is not to become numb. The point is to stop treating your own appetite like a liability that must be smuggled in under his.

A no is not a verdict on your entire sexual character. It is a no about this person, this hour, this night. Collapsing those things together is how people go back to waiting. Waiting feels like control because you cannot be refused if you never ask. It is a cheap sort of control. It keeps the ego intact and the sex mediocre.

There is also the opposite fear, which is looking too available. Available is treated like a stain. The joke is that availability is what sex actually requires. Somebody has to open the door. Somebody has to say the thing. Somebody has to put a hand on a waist and mean it. If the only socially clean position is reluctance, then the people who like sex are forced to act like they are being talked into it. That performance is exhausting. It also produces partners who never learn what you want because you have been too busy looking chosen.

Initiation is a form of taste. You are not just starting sex. You are choosing the terms while you still have language. Text first and you can say what kind of night it is. Pull him in and you can set the pace before his porn tempo arrives and starts remixing a good minute. Take the yes early and you are less likely to talk yourself into a half-wanted hour because the clock got late and the conversation got blurry.

In a relationship the same rule applies, only the waiting gets dressed up as patience. People sit on the sofa wanting each other and running a silent competition over who will break first. He does not want to look desperate. She does not want to look like she is asking. Both of them get polite. Polite is death in a long bed. The couple that waits for a perfect cinematic moment often gets Thursday night fatigue and a kiss that feels like a chore. The couple that can start it badly, laugh, and carry on tends to have more sex and less mythology about who is allowed to want it.

Practical does not have to be grim. If you are going to start it, start it in a way your actual mouth would say. Do not borrow a script that makes you cringe halfway through typing. Do not send a paragraph that sounds like an essay on longing if what you mean is come here. Do not initiate as a test. Tests make the other person into coursework. Say the want. Leave space for the answer. If the answer is yes, do not suddenly become shy about the thing you asked for. That is how nights get confused.

Consent does not disappear because you made the first move. If anything it gets cleaner. You have put the want on the table. He can meet it or not. You can hear the quality of the yes. A yes that arrives with energy is different from a yes that arrives because he does not know how to decline a situation that is already in motion. Starting it gives you a better view of that difference. Receiving it in silence often does not.

Safety belongs in this conversation without turning the whole piece into a leaflet. Meeting someone new is still meeting someone new. A first move is not a reason to abandon the ordinary precautions you would take anyway. Initiation is appetite plus judgement. Those two can share a cab.

The double standard will not vanish because you sent a confident text. Someone will still have a comment. Someone will still decide that a woman who wants sex on a Tuesday must want it from everyone, including the audience. Let them do their accounting. Reputation is other people’s hobby. Your night is yours. The people who use easy as an insult are rarely offering better sex. They are offering a lecture.

There is a particular pleasure in being the one who starts it when you actually like sex. Not the performance of liking it. The fact of it. High drive gets treated like a problem to be managed, softened, made palatable. Managed desire becomes vague. Vague desire gets vague nights. Starting it is how appetite stays specific. This person. This evening. This mouth. Not a general fog of being up for whatever happens if somebody else gets brave.

It also changes the rubbish-sex problem. When you wait to be chosen, you are already a little grateful that anything happened at all. Gratitude is a poor critic. It lets the pace slide. It lets him finish and go quiet and call that a full evening. When you started it, you remember what you walked in wanting. That memory is useful. It makes it easier to say slower. Stay. Not that. Again. It makes it easier to leave when the night is lazy. You did not wait three hours to be granted an average time. You asked for a good one.

Men are confusing on this point in the usual way. Plenty of them say they want a woman who goes for it. Then she does, and they have to decide whether they meant appetite or just the compliment of being pursued on their schedule. Watch which one you are dealing with. The first kind gets better when you start it. The second kind gets odd. Odd is a review. Believe it.

Humour helps because the whole dance is faintly ridiculous. Two adults, both thinking about the same thing, both pretending the thought might pass if nobody names it. All that intelligence spent on not looking keen. Keen is the point. Keen is the heat. Keen is the reason anyone bothers taking their clothes off when the sofa was perfectly fine.

Seriousness helps because initiation is not only spice. It is a way of not abandoning yourself in the first five minutes. If you cannot say you want him, you will struggle to say you want the rhythm changed. If you cannot risk a no over a text, you will struggle to risk a no in the bed. The first move is practice for every move after it.

So text first. Pull him in. Say stay. Say come over. Say I have been thinking about that thing you do with your hands and I would like it again tonight. Use your own voice. Keep the ask small enough to send and clear enough to answer. If he meets you there, the night has a pulse from the start. If he does not, you have lost an evening that was going to be built on his timing anyway.

Waiting looks elegant in stories. In real rooms it looks like two people hoping the other one will be brave enough to want them out loud. Bravery is not a speech. It is a sentence sent while the heat is still in the body.

Take the yes while it is still hot. The cold version is how people end up convinced they are difficult, when really they were only late.

  • Bring A Toy Without The Speech

Put it on the table like a charger. Not in a velvet bag with a preamble. Not after a drink you did not want, once the conversation has been steered into a TED Talk about modernity and open mindedness and how some people are just more adventurous. Put it down the way you put down your phone. Here is an object. It exists. It plugs into the evening.

The speech is the bit that ruins it. Women are trained to wrap desire in explanation, as if wanting a reliable orgasm were a planning application. You hear yourself doing it. I thought maybe. Only if you are comfortable. It does not mean you are not enough. It is just something I sometimes. By the time you have finished sanding the edges off the request, the request has died of good manners.

He did not write an essay before he put his mouth on you. He did not convene a briefing about what his hands meant. He reached. That is allowed to travel in both directions.

There is a serious reason the speech appears, and it is not vanity. A lot of men treat a toy like a review of their performance that arrived early. The object sits there and quietly suggests that his timing, his hands, his favourite pace might not be the whole architecture of the night. Ego hears that before curiosity does. So you start managing his feelings in advance. You make yourself smaller so he can stay large. You call it consideration. It is often just fear wearing a nice blouse.

Fear of being called a lot. Fear of looking practised. Fear of the word easy, which still gets used like a verdict instead of a scheduling note. Fear that he will laugh in that thin way men laugh when they are deciding whether they are threatened. The speech is an attempt to get in front of the laugh. It rarely works. People who were going to be strange about it will be strange about it. People who were going to be interested did not need the disclaimer.

    So skip it.

If you are going to his, put it in the bag next to the charger and the mascara and the fact of yourself. If he is coming to yours, leave it where a sensible object lives. Drawer beside the bed is fine. Bathroom shelf is a bit on the nose. Kitchen counter is a bit unhinged. Bedside is honest. Honesty is the point.

You do not have to produce it like a rabbit from a hat at the exact moment his belt comes undone. You also do not have to hide it as if it were contraband. Midway through, when the heat is already in the room and his idea of a plan is starting to look like hope plus thrusting, you can reach for it the way you reach for a glass of water. No announcement. No seminar. If he asks what that is, you can say the true sentence, which is short. It is a toy. I like it.

Watch what he does with his face.

Interest has a look. He gets a bit still, then a bit curious, then he wants to know where it goes and whether he is allowed to be involved. That man has just become more useful. Not because a piece of plastic is magic. Because he has room in his pride for your body to have a preference that did not originate in him.

The flinch has a look too. A joke that arrives too fast. A tightness around the mouth. The sudden need to prove that he has never needed help in his life, which is a claim only made by people who have needed help and taken it personally. That is data. Not a moral trial. Data. You now know whether the night is a collaboration or a display.

You are allowed to decide what you do with the data. Some nights you put it away and take what is on offer because you still want him, and wanting is allowed to be inconsistent. Some nights you keep it in your hand because you came here for an evening, not a lesson in making a man comfortable with the concept of female anatomy. Both choices can be adult. Only one of them should become a habit if you actually like sex.

The serious part, the part underneath the joke about chargers, is dependency. Too many nights are built around his timeline. He gets hard, he gets close, he finishes, the temperature in the room drops, and whatever you were building has to either sprint or die. A toy changes the power supply. The evening is no longer waiting on his stamina, his accuracy, or his belief that he can find the right spot by vibes alone. You can keep going when he needs a minute. You can start before he has organised himself. You can finish without turning the whole thing into a referendum on whether he is good in bed.

That last one matters more than people admit. A lot of bad sex survives because nobody wants to be the person who implies the obvious. He is trying. He is sweet. He asked if you came in the same voice people use for was that enough salt. You say something kind because kindness is easier than logistics. Then you go home and want to bite a pillow. A toy is logistics. It is not a break up letter. It is not a review. It is a way of keeping the night honest.

There is humour in how unromantic this sounds, and the humour is useful. Romance, as sold, is a man who just knows. In practice, the man who just knows is rare, and the man who can be shown is common enough to work with. Showing him does not require a monologue about the orgasm gap, porn, and the historical neglect of the clitoris. He can read a book on his own time. In the room, you need something that buzzes in the right place while he does the other things he is actually good at. Kissing. Weight. Dirtier talk than he thinks he can pull off. The toy does not replace him unless he replaces himself by sulking.

Sulking is the fork in the road.

If he treats it like a rival, you are not looking at a sex problem. You are looking at a status problem. He wanted to be the cause of your pleasure in the same way some men want to be the only name on a lease. Shared credit feels like a demotion. You can have patience for nerves. Nerves look like, I have not done this, show me. Status looks like, why would you need that if I am here. One of those can be worked with. The other one will keep turning every useful object into an insult.

Be plain if he goes thin-lipped. I want this as well as you. Not instead. If that sentence makes him smaller, he was already making himself the main character of your body. That is not mysterious. That is just inconvenient, and it is better to find out before you have spent six weeks teaching him your patience.

On the practical side, keep it simple the first time you bring one into a new bed. You do not need a drawer that looks like a hardware shop. One thing you already know how to use will do more for the night than a complicated gadget you have to Google in the dark. Quiet is kinder than a toy that sounds like a tiny lawnmower. Charge it before you leave the house, which is the only reason the charger comparison is not just a joke. Nothing kills heat like an ambitious object dying at the exact moment you needed it to be competent.

Use it on yourself first, in front of him, if the mood can take it. That is often cleaner than handing it over and hoping he has instincts. He can watch how you angle it, how little movement you actually want, how you do not treat your own body like a drum kit. Men who only learn from films tend to go too fast and too proud. A live demonstration is faster than a paragraph. If you do put it in his hand, give him one instruction and then stop talking. There. Stay. Do not get creative. Creativity is how good minutes get lost.

You can also keep it. You do not owe him the job. Some of the best nights are the ones where he is in his body, you are in yours, and the toy is just the third useful thing in the bed. That arrangement offends people who think sex has to look like a scene with a hero. Let it offend them. You are not shooting a poster.

There will be a temptation, once it has gone well, to explain after the fact. To soothe. To say you loved what he did and the toy was only extra and please do not take it personally. Sometimes a little warmth after is decent. A full repair job is not required. He had sex. You had sex. An object helped. Adults can survive that sentence.

The double standard still sits under all of this, which is why the humour has to stay or the whole subject gets heavy enough to flatten. A man can arrive with condoms, expectations, and a mental library of things he wants to try, and that is just being keen. A woman arrives with a toy and suddenly she has a reputation, a backstory, a level of experience people want to audit. Let them audit the air. You do not have to narrate your history to justify a preference. Liking sex is not a confession. Being good at knowing what works is not a warning label.

If you are doing this in something casual, the same rules apply with less furniture around them. Casual is not a skip pass for effort, and it is not a reason to pretend you are simpler than you are. You can want a clean night, a condom, a toy, and a man who does not look injured by the idea that your orgasm might have a power source other than his optimism. People who only want you uncomplicated are asking you to be less alive for the length of their comfort.

There is also the private version, which does not need an audience at all. Bring the toy home for yourself and stop treating solo sex like a draft of the real thing. That is how you learn the map you keep handing to people who cannot read. High drive without knowledge is just restlessness. High drive with a bit of competence is how you stop accepting rubbish and calling it chemistry.

None of this has to be solemn. The solemn version is a pamphlet. The live version is you putting an object on the table, carrying on with your mouth and your hands, and letting the room catch up. If he gets interested, the night gets wider. If he flinches, you have learned something cheaper than another month of translating yourself into someone easier to handle.

Leave the speech in the bag.

You already know what you came for. The toy is only there so the evening does not have to depend on whether he does.

  • Own Being Called Easy

The word arrives like a receipt someone else printed.  Easy. Slung across a pub table. Dropped in a group chat that was supposed to be about something else. Said with a laugh so the speaker can pretend it was nothing. It is never nothing. It is a filing system. It is how certain people keep score of a woman’s appetite without admitting they are keeping score.

Wanting sex and having it will get you that label faster than almost anything. Not cruelty. Not carelessness. Wanting. The wanting is the offence. The sex is just the evidence.

Here is the part that needs saying without a joke first. A reputation is other people’s paperwork. It is not a medical record. It is not a moral exam you sat and failed. It is a story assembled by people who were not in the room, or were in the room and still missed the point. It does not confer ownership. It does not give anyone rights to your nights, your body, or a running commentary on how those nights should look.

You can be called easy and still have taste. Those two facts can sit in the same person without cancelling each other out.

The humour, because there is humour in it if you refuse to kneel, is how seriously some people take the ledger. They will forgive a man a messy decade and call it growing up. They will watch a woman enjoy herself twice in the same month and start drafting a personality. He is experienced. She is a warning label. He got it out of his system. She is the system.

It would be funnier if it were less efficient. The word does a lot of work in four letters. It means you said yes. It means you said yes more than once. It means you said yes without making the yes look like an accident. God forbid the desire looked like it belonged to you.

People love a woman who has sex if she looks faintly surprised about it. Reluctant is romantic. Hungry is a problem. Hungry and cheerful is a scandal. Hungry, cheerful, and picky is apparently too many personality traits for one body.

That is the trick they never admit. Easy is not really about volume. It is about tone. A woman who treats sex like something she is allowed to want, choose, and review is harder to manage than a woman who treats it like a favour she got talked into. The first one has standards. The second one can be flattered into worse decisions. Guess which one gets called difficult when she leaves, and easy when she stays.

There is a serious cost to swallowing the word. You start editing the night before it happens. You stay with sex that is lazy because leaving would confirm the story. You laugh off the man who goes quiet after he comes because asking for a sentence would sound demanding, and demanding on top of willing is apparently greedy. You perform a little shame as insurance. Just enough apology to keep the room comfortable.

That insurance is a con. The room was never going to be comfortable. Some people need a woman to be slightly sorry about her own heat. If you refuse, they will invent the sorry for you and call it your reputation.

    So do not buy it.

Casual sex without an apology tour is not a character collapse. It is an adult arrangement. Two people want a night. They have it. They either stay decent or they do not. The decent part is the standard. The number of nights is bookkeeping.

Taste is how you keep the whole thing from turning into sludge. Easy, as an insult, pretends you will take anything. That is the smear. Meet it with the opposite. Want the sex. Notice when it is rubbish. Leave when it is rubbish. Ask for the pace. Keep the clit in the plot. Require a condom like you require keys. Want him to stay in the room after, not because you are building a marriage on a Tuesday, but because vanishing the second he finishes is grim manners.

High drive does not mean low standards. That sentence should be on a tote bag and also carved into a few headboards.

The double standard is older than anyone currently using it. Men get a biography. Women get a rumour. He is praised for appetite as if appetite were a sport. She is advised to keep hers quiet, then blamed for being cold when she does, then blamed for being easy when she does not. There is no winning version of this game because the game is not designed for you to win. It is designed to keep female desire looking like a problem that needs supervision.

You do not have to supervise yourself for them.

That does not mean being careless with other people. It does not mean treating bodies like free samples. Consent is still the floor. Kindness is still available. You can like sex a lot and still be the person who checks in, who hears a no, who does not turn a warm room into a negotiation. Wanting is not a free pass to be sloppy. It is a reason to be precise.

The serious version of owning the word is this. You stop using other people’s anxiety as a mirror. You stop letting a nickname do your thinking. You look at the actual night. Was it wanted. Was it honest. Was it good. Did anyone get treated like public property. If the answers are clean, the gossip can sit in the corridor and wait.

The funny version is watching how quickly the story changes depending on who is telling it. Sleep with someone once and you are mysterious. Sleep with him again and you are keen. Sleep with someone else and you are a pattern. Sleep with nobody for a bit and you are healing, which is a polite way of saying the audience would like a quieter season. You cannot win an audience that thinks your body is communal television.

Let them talk. They will talk anyway. Silence has never protected a woman from a story. Good behaviour has never retired the ledger. The people who use easy as a weapon are rarely talking about ethics. They are talking about discomfort. Your freedom made their categories look small.

There is a particular Essex flavour to this, though it happens everywhere. Class gets in the mix. Be too blunt about wanting something and you are common. Be too polished and you are calculating. Speak plainly about sex and someone decides you have no mystery, as if mystery were a moral achievement and not just good lighting. You can be well spoken and still get filed under easy because you did not wrap the wanting in lace.

    Fine. Lace is optional.

What is not optional is the distinction between being available and being indiscriminate. Available means you can want a night and say so. Indiscriminate means you outsource your taste to whoever is standing nearest. Those are different women. Sometimes they are even different nights in the same woman, which is allowed, because people are not brands. The insult collapses them on purpose. Do not help it.

If someone calls you easy to your face, you do not owe a thesis. You can laugh. You can say that is one word for it. You can ask whether they are bored. Humour works here because the accusation wants heat. It wants you flustered, explaining, listing the men, proving you have standards like you are applying for a visa. Refuse the interview.

If it comes from a man you have actually slept with, that is a different weather system. A man who enjoyed the yes and then uses the yes against you is telling you what the night was for. It was for him. Your wanting was convenient until it made you look free. You can file that under useful information and not under self improvement.

Friends can be worse, in a quieter way. The raised eyebrow. The joke that is not a joke. The concern that sounds like care and feels like management. I just worry about how it looks. It looks like a life. That is how it looks.

You are allowed to want more than one night with more than one person and still be loyal where loyalty was agreed. You are allowed to like filthy, straightforward, unromantic sex and still want a hand in your hair after. You are allowed to be good at it and not pretend you wandered in by accident. Competence in bed is not a confession.

The apology tour is what happens when a woman tries to pay rent on her own reputation. She explains the context. She mentions she was drunk, or sad, or it did not mean anything, or she does not usually. She makes the desire smaller so other people can stand it. The rent never ends. Pay once and they will invoice you again.

    Stop paying.

Keep the nights that were good. Keep the standards that made them good. Keep the right to want another one tomorrow without issuing a press release. Easy, if it means you do not treat your own desire like a stain, is just a rude word for unashamed. Let it be rude. You do not have to become polite in return.

There will still be moments that sting. Anyone who says otherwise is selling a posture. A word can land even when you know it is rubbish. The work is not becoming numb. The work is not handing the word the keys. Feel it. Then go home, put the kettle on, and remember that paperwork filed by strangers has no authority in your flat.

Wanting sex is a personality trait in the same way wanting money or wanting a quieter life is a personality trait. It shapes how you move. It does not make you public. It does not make you owed. It does not make you less entitled to care, or to leaving, or to saying that was rubbish and I would like something better.

Own the nights. Own the appetite. Own the fact that some people will need a smaller woman than the one you actually are.

    Let them talk.

    Keep your taste.

    Keep your nights.

  • Make Feet Part Of It

People treat feet like a punchline until they are in the room and somebody actually pays attention to them. Then the joke gets very quiet. That is the whole case, really. Not a manifesto. Not a new personality. Just the fact that a pair of feet, handled with a bit of heat and a bit of patience, can take a man apart in a way his favourite position never quite manages. You do not have to join a club. You do not have to buy the vocabulary. You try it once, properly, and you see what happens.

There is a seriousness underneath the giggle. Most sex gets funnelled into the same three postcodes. Mouth. Hands. The obvious main event. Everything else is treated as garnish or a dare. Feet sit in that odd drawer with ears and the back of the knee. People know they are part of a body. People forget they are part of a nervous system. Ignore them and they are just the things that walked you home. Give them time and they become a switch.

The humour writes itself, of course. The second you say feet out loud, somebody does the voice. Somebody mentions a celebrity interview. Somebody decides you have announced a lifestyle. That noise is why a lot of good nights never get as far as a bottle of oil. Shame loves an easy target. Feet are easy. They are also right there at the end of the bed, warm from the shower, doing nothing, while two people recycle the same routine and wonder why it feels a bit samey.

Try it without the identity parade. That is the advice. Do not workshop it in the group chat for a week. Do not issue a press release. Wash them. Warm the room up. Put something slick in your palm. Start as if you are just being thorough.

Hygiene is not a mood killer. It is the difference between sensual and a bit grim. Shower first. Nails tidy enough that nobody is conducting a risk assessment. If you have been in town all day, do not improvise off a pavement foot. The bar is not spa level. The bar is clean, warm, and not a surprise attack with cold toes.

Oil matters more than people think. Lotion sits on the skin. Oil moves. Warm it in your hands so the first contact is not a flinch. Ankles, soles, the line up the tendon. Slow pressure, not a tickle. Tickling makes people laugh and leave their bodies. Pressure keeps them in. Think massage that has wandered off the professional clock. The aim is heat, not comedy.

Watch his face. That is the serious bit. You will know in about thirty seconds whether this is a door or a wall. Some men go still in that particular way that means the brain has stopped making sentences. Some men get shy and then lean in. Some men will politely endure it because they think they should be game, and that is your cue to stop. Game is not the same as wanting. If the body is polite and the breath has not changed, leave it. Curiosity should not steamroll a no that is wearing a smile.

When it works, it works because it is attention. That is the unsexy truth under the sexy one. A lot of men spend their lives being touched in the same functional ways. Handshake. Hug. The rush to the parts that count on paper. Feet are not supposed to matter, so when they suddenly do, the contrast is filthy. You are lingering where the script says linger is unnecessary. Unnecessary is often where people come undone.

There is a version of this that stays at massage and never needs a new noun. Oil, thumbs, the slow drag along the arch, a mouth at the ankle if that feels natural. You can keep it there all night and still have changed the temperature of the room. There is another version that turns into a footjob because the geometry is obvious and his brain has already arrived. Both are allowed. Neither requires you to become a person who only talks about feet now.

If it does go further, keep the same rules you would keep with your hands. Pace. Grip. Oil so nothing drags. Eyes up enough to catch whether he is with you or performing enjoyment. The mistake is to treat it like a trick you saw described once and then rush the ending. The point is the slowness. The point is that you are not in a hurry to graduate to something more respectable. Respectable is how nights get boring.

A lot of women hesitate because they think liking this, or being good at it, says something large about them. It does not. It says you noticed a part of him that still had feeling in it. High drive does not mean you have to stick to the official menu. It means you can afford to be picky and still be experimental. Those two things are supposed to be opposites. They are not. Taste includes trying the side dish.

The double standard turns up here too, because of course it does. A man can mutter about legs and arches and the way a heel looks and it is just being a man. A woman who takes that seriously and does something competent with it gets filed under too much, too game, too specific. Let them file. Specific is how you get decent sex. Vague is how you get the same twenty minutes on a loop.

There is also the simple fact that feet are honest. You cannot really fake interest with them the way people fake interest with a moan. If you are disgusted, it shows. If you are curious, that shows too. So check yourself before you offer it as a performance. Doing it to be impressive is a fast way to feel resentful. Doing it because the slowness suits you, because you like the look of him going quiet for a useful reason, that is a different night.

Quiet is relevant. Some men talk too much on the way in and vanish after they come. This is one of the rare things that can shut them up in the middle, which is a public service. Not silenced like punished. Silenced like the commentary became unnecessary. You will hear the breath change. You will feel the foot flex and then give up the flex. That is the tell. Stay with what produced it. Do not get creative for the sake of looking advanced.

Practical notes, because advice that stays poetic is just vibes.

Sit where you can be comfortable for a while. Twisting yourself into a shape that looks good in theory and kills your back in practice is how experiments die. A bed is fine. A sofa is fine. A chair with him sitting and you lower can be easier on everyone. Pillows exist. Use them.

Keep a towel nearby. Oil goes where oil wants. This is not elegant. It is also not a disaster unless you have silk sheets and a personality that cannot survive a stain. Put a towel down and carry on.

Talk only as much as the room needs. A little direction is useful. Harder. Slower. There. A running documentary is not. He does not need the concept explained while you are in it. If you want to check consent, check it in ordinary language. Is this good. Do you want me to keep going. Then listen to the answer, not the answer you hoped for.

If he laughs at first, that is not automatically a no. People laugh when they are nervous and when something has been turned into a meme. Give it a minute of actual pressure. If the laugh stays and the body never drops into it, stop and move on without making a case. Nothing kills heat like a closing argument.

If you hate it, that is also data. You are allowed to try a thing and decide it is not for you. Wanting a full sex life does not mean every corridor has to be walked to the end. The point of this category is appetite with standards. Standards include no.

There is a tenderness in it that people skip because tenderness sounds like the wrong genre. Holding a foot is oddly intimate. It is care with a filthy edge. You are handling the part of him that hits the pavement and the office floor and the last train. You are saying that even this counts. For someone who is used to being wanted in fragments, that can land harder than a speech.

It can land for you too. Being the one who sets the pace, who chooses the overlooked thing, who does not wait to be directed, changes the balance of the room. A lot of women are trained to receive the night as it arrives. Trying this is a small way of running it. Not as a power game. As taste.

You do not need candles unless you like candles. You do not need a playlist unless silence makes you self conscious. You need clean skin, warm hands, enough oil, and the willingness to look a bit ridiculous for the first ninety seconds. Most good sex has a ridiculous corridor. People pretend otherwise and then wonder why everything feels choreographed.

Afterwards, do not turn it into a debrief unless he wants one. The worst thing you can do to a new thing that worked is immediately demand it explain itself. Have a glass of water. Stay in the bed. If he has gone quiet in the useful way, leave him there. If he has gone quiet in the vanished way, that is a separate article and a separate problem.

And if it did not work, fine. You washed your feet and gave a massage. There are worse ways to spend twenty minutes. The experiment still did its job. You found a wall, or you found a door. Either one is better than recycling the official menu because you were afraid of being the woman who mentioned feet.

Desire as a personality trait looks like this in practice. Not a speech about liberation. A bottle of oil and the nerve to use it without apologising for the joke. Let them laugh in the abstract. In the room, with the pressure right and the pace slow, the joke tends to run out of material.

Try it once. Do it properly. See what happens.

  • Use Your Mouth On Purpose

Use your mouth because you want to. That is the whole article, really. The rest is just the long way round. Oral has been lumbered with a job it cannot do. It gets treated like rent. Like a nice gesture. Like the thing you offer so he knows you are generous, game, not one of those women. The minute it becomes a favour, the night changes temperature. You can feel it in the room. He can feel it too, even if he is too polite or too hopeful to say so.

A bored mouth is obvious. There is no elegant way around that. The jaw does the work and the rest of you clocks off. You go tidy and competent and slightly elsewhere. Hands rest like they are waiting for a bus. Breath gets dutiful. The pace turns into something you could set a washing machine to. He may still make the noises. Bodies are suggestible. That does not mean the scene is good. It means he has noticed movement and decided not to inspect the quality of it too closely.

Wanting is different. Wanting has a weight to it. You get closer because you like being that close. You pay attention because the attention is part of the heat, not a chore list you are ticking so nobody can accuse you of being selfish. You use your hands because your hands want in. You slow down because slowing down feels filthy, not because a video told you to count to eight.

This is the serious bit, so I will say it plainly. You do not owe anyone your mouth. Starting the night does not mean you have signed over the whole menu. Fancying him does not mean you have to perform hunger you do not feel. A reputation for being good in bed is a stupid reason to do anything with your face. People will call you easy for having sex and cold for having standards. Let them file their paperwork. Your mouth is not a public service.

The humour sits right next to that, because the performance version is funny once you stop being polite about it. Technique theatre. The sudden documentary concentration. The man who puts a hand on the back of your head like he has seen that done and would now like it done to him, as if pressure were personality. The woman who is clearly thinking about emails. The wet sound with no pulse behind it. Everyone pretending this is chemistry when it is mostly manners.

Manners ruin sex. They really do.

If you like doing it, do it like you like doing it. That sounds simple until you watch how often people hide inside competence. Competence is useful. It is also a brilliant place to conceal the fact that you are not actually in the room. You can be skilled and absent at the same time. You can know what goes where and still be giving the sexual equivalent of a firm handshake.

Enthusiasm beats that. Not the cartoon kind. Not the soundtrack. The ordinary kind, where you are interested. Where you notice what makes his breath catch and stay with that instead of moving on because you have a sequence to get through. Where you look up because you want to see the face, not because eye contact is a tip you read once and filed under advanced.

Things to try, if you actually want the night.

Get comfortable first. Knees, pillows, a position you can hold without turning it into a plank. Pain makes people rush. Rushing makes people theatrical. If your neck is already complaining, the scene is already lying.

Use your hand. A mouth on its own is a lot of pressure and not much steering. A hand gives you control of pace and keeps you from turning the whole thing into an endurance event. It also means you can pause without the pause feeling like a verdict.

Slow is not virtuous. Slow is just easier to feel. Most people go fast because fast looks like effort. Fast is also how you stop noticing anything. Find the pace that makes him go quiet in the good way, then stay there. If he starts directing you like traffic, you can listen or you can ignore him. Listening is useful when he is telling the truth. Ignoring him is useful when he is reciting porn.

Noise from you can be real or it can be set dressing. If you are going to make a sound, let it be the one that happens anyway. The fake moan during oral is a special kind of unconvincing. It has a brightness to it. It is doing customer service.

Pay attention to whether you are aroused. That is the tell. If your body is in it, the mouth usually follows. If your body has left the building, you are performing. You can keep going. Adults do all sorts of things they are only half in. Just do not dress that up as generosity and then feel obscurely resentful at 1am. Resentment is a terrible aftertaste.

There is a version of this advice that turns into a sermon about female labour, and I am not unsympathetic to the sermon. Plenty of nights are lopsided. Plenty of men receive oral like a birthright and give it like a timed exam they would rather postpone. That imbalance is real. It is also not fixed by you doing a better job of a thing you did not want to do. Excellence in a favour still leaves you the person who did the favour.

Reciprocity is a separate conversation. Have it. Have it before the clothes are a pile, if you can stand the awkwardness. “I like this” is a useful sentence. “I want this back” is another. “Not tonight” is a complete one. You would be amazed how many adults treat a closed mouth as a puzzle rather than an answer.

If you are on the receiving end, the same rule applies in reverse. Use your actual responses. Do not award marks for effort if the effort is landing in the wrong postcode. A polite good girl script trains him to keep missing. A hand in his hair that means stay is clearer than poetry. So is a shift of your hips. So is “left” and “slower” and “that, don’t get creative.” Men take silence as a pass. They take theatre as a pass too. What they cannot ignore is direction delivered like you mean to be there at the end of it.

The double standard hangs over all of this like cheap perfume. A man who likes using his mouth gets called generous. A woman who likes using hers gets a nickname and a story that travels. That is ugly and it is old and it will not be solved in a blog post. What you can do is refuse the apology tour. Like what you like. Decline what you do not. Be good at the nights you actually want. Be average, even blunt, about the ones you do not.

High drive complicates the picture in a way people do not talk about cleanly. When you want sex a lot, it is tempting to treat every act as proof that you are the kind of woman who says yes. Appetite gets confused with availability. You can want a body in the room and still not want that particular job tonight. You can be filthy and still have a no. Those are not opposite traits. They are the same adult.

I think the fear underneath duty oral is the fear of being seen as less. Less game. Less easy. Less the girl who makes the night simple. So the mouth goes to work and the self waits outside. That bargain only holds until you notice you are keeping score. Then the sex starts to feel like admin with better lighting.

Do it on purpose or do not do it. Purpose looks like this. You chose it. You can stop it. You are allowed to be into the specific mess of it, the taste, the heat, the way a person comes apart when they are being paid attention to. You are allowed to find that hot for its own sake, not as a down payment on being wanted later.

If you do not like it, there is no moral prize for forcing a talent. Hands exist. Toys exist. Positions exist. Leaving exists. A night can be good without a scene you resent. People survive.

If you do like it, let that be visible. Not as a performance of being sexually unshockable. As presence. Get closer than you need to. Take your time when time is the filthy part. Stop when your jaw says stop, then come back if you want to, not because the scene feels unfinished on his side. His timeline is not the house style.

The men who go quiet in the good way, the ones whose commentary falls apart, they are responding to attention with a pulse in it. The men who put a hand on your head and stare at the ceiling like they are waiting for a bus are often responding to movement. Learn the difference. It will save you hours.

And if you catch yourself doing the tidy, competent, slightly absent version, you can stop mid-sentence. That is allowed too. Sit up. Drink water. Say you are done with that part. The room will survive the honesty. If it cannot, the room was never that interested in you. It was interested in the service.

Use your mouth on purpose. Wanting is the point. Everything else is just choreography people hide inside when they are afraid to admit they are not hungry.

  • Talk Before The Clothes Leave

Talk while the kettle is still an option. That is the whole argument, dressed up and taken out. Say the yes. Say the no. Say the thing you actually like, while your mouth is still doing language and not just heat. Once the clothes start leaving, diplomacy gets drunk. People become brave in the wrong direction. They become polite in the worse one. They start guessing, and guessing is how a decent night turns into a scene you finish out of manners.

It sounds unromantic. It is not. Romance is not the same thing as fog. Fog is just two people hoping the other one has read the same invisible manual.

There is a particular window that keeps getting wasted. The walk home. The sofa. The last drink. The bit where he is still being a person and you are still being a person and nobody has decided that talking will kill the mood. That window is gold. It is also short. Miss it and you are left trying to negotiate with a man whose blood has already clocked off from his brain and taken a more exciting job downstairs.

Heat is a terrible time to invent policy. Everyone knows this and then walks into the same trap anyway. You think, I will say it if it comes up. It does come up. It comes up as a hand in a place you did not offer, or a pace you hate, or a question asked with his mouth already busy. Then you are doing the worst kind of multitasking: wanting, assessing, and trying to protect his feelings while your own body is mid sentence.

That is not sexy. That is admin in dim lighting.

The serious part is simple. You are allowed to want sex and still have terms. Casual does not cancel taste. High drive does not mean open plan. Liking it, properly liking it, makes the conversation more important, not less. If you are going to be in it, be in it on purpose. Rubbish sex is not a personality building exercise. It is just rubbish.

The funny part is how often people treat a two minute chat like it will flatten the entire evening. As if a condom sentence is the enemy of lust. As if “I do not like that” is a fire extinguisher. As if telling someone you want their mouth, slow, and you want them to stay there, is going to make them flee into the night clutching their coat. In practice the opposite happens more than people admit. Clarity is a turn on when it is said like you mean it, not like you are reading terms and conditions through a letterbox.

There is a difference between a briefing and a mood killer. You do not need a laminated agenda. You do not need to sit him down with a pen. You need three true things, said in a voice that still sounds like you.

    What you want.
    What you do not.
What you like enough to ask for.

That is it. The rest is garnish.

What you want can be blunt. I want you to come home with me. I want this to happen. I want it unhurried. I want it filthy and I still want you to listen. Wanting is not the same as begging. Begging has a slump in it. Wanting stands up. If your drive runs hot, say so before the room starts making decisions for you. Otherwise you end up taking whatever is offered because the offering is already underway.

What you do not has to be equally ordinary. No teeth there. Not that name. Not without a condom. Not if you are going to go quiet and leave me with the ceiling. Not if you think starting means finishing no matter what. A no said early is clean. A no said late is still valid, but it arrives with more mess, more explaining, more of that awful little pause where someone looks wounded for being told the truth.

People get shy about the no because they have been trained to keep the peace. The peace is overrated. The peace is how you get a night you did not choose and then replay it on the bus home like a bad edit.

What you like is the part most people skip because it feels vain or specific or a bit much. It is the best part. I like being talked to. I like a hand here and not there. I like when you do not change the pace the second it starts working. I like eye contact and I hate the porn script. I like my own hand in the mix. I like you staying after. None of that is a manifesto. It is a map. Men who want to be good will use a map. Men who only want to arrive will ignore it, and then you know what kind of evening you are in.

Timing matters more than poetry. Say it before the first serious kiss turns into a conveyor belt. Say it when you are still on the sofa and can stand up. Say it in the kitchen, mug in hand, like you are deciding on food. The more normal you make the sentence, the less it sounds like a warning siren. Sex talk does not need a special voice. Special voices are how people end up sounding like they are presenting a webinar on their own genitals.

If you need a shape for it, keep it short enough to say without drawing breath like a speech.

    I want this.
    I do not want that.
This is the thing that actually works for me.

Then stop talking. Let him answer. The answer is the point. A man who can hear a boundary without sulking is already ahead of the ones who treat your mouth as decoration. A man who argues with a condom is not mysterious. He is a closed door with charm on it. A man who says “yeah, tell me if I get it wrong” has just done more foreplay than the last three who thought enthusiasm was a substitute for listening.

There is a version of this conversation that goes wrong by being too careful. The constant permission loop. Can I kiss you. Can I touch you. Can I keep going. Can I exist. Safety matters. Treating a grown woman like a form that needs signing every eight seconds will still kill the heat. The aim is not to turn desire into customer service. The aim is to set the room so nobody has to guess in the dark.

Set the big things first. Then let the small things be live. That is the balance. Condoms, hard limits, the act you do not want, the act you do. After that, a body can say more without a committee meeting on every inch of skin.

The other wrong version is saying nothing and hoping he is psychic. Psychic men are a folklore creature. What you get instead is porn tempo, a hand that is busy and uninformed, and the classic mid scene look of someone who thinks your silence is a review score. Silence gets misread. Always. If you go quiet because you are shy, he may think you are overwhelmed in a good way. If you go quiet because you hate it, he may think he should go harder. Heat makes fools of translators.

So talk while you can still be accurate.

This is also where reputation tries to sit on your knee. The fear that asking for what you like makes you a lot. That naming a drive makes you easy. That having terms makes you difficult. Let them sort their filing. Easy is a word people use when they want your yes without your standards. Difficult is a word they use when your no arrives on time. Neither word has to come home with you.

If you actually like sex, you owe that liking a bit of spine. High drive without taste is just volume. Taste is the part that keeps the nights from blurring into a single shrug. You can want it often and still walk away from a man who cannot hear a sentence. Those two facts are not at war. They only feel like they are if you have been taught that appetite should be grateful.

There are practical places to put the talk so it does not land like an intervention.

On the way. In the taxi, if the driver is not part of the date. Walking. Standing in the kitchen pretending to look for glasses. Before you put music on, because music becomes an excuse to stop using words. A text, even, if your mouth gets proud and stupid when he is close. A text is not unsexy. A text is a sentence that cannot get lost in someone’s neck.

Try being specific enough that he cannot hide in general agreement. “Just be normal” means nothing. “Do not go straight in” means something. “I want your mouth first” means something. “If I say stay there, stay there” means something. Vague women get vague sex and then wonder why the evening felt like a cover version.

Try asking him one question back. Not twenty. One. What do you not want. Or what do you actually like. Watch how he handles being asked. Some men only communicate in the direction that benefits them. They can narrate their desire in high definition and go blank when it is their turn to hear yours. That blank is useful. It tells you whether you are about to have sex with a person or with someone’s appetite.

The serious edge, the one that should stay in the room even when the jokes are working, is that starting is not a contract. You can talk before the clothes leave and still change your mind after they have. A clean stop is part of the same skill. If it turns grim, say so. If he takes that personally, that is his paperwork. Your body is not a booking he has confirmed.

Humour helps because the subject gets heavy the second anyone mentions “communication,” as if you are about to run a workshop with biscuits. You are not. You are trying to have a good time without performing or enduring. That is a reasonable adult hobby. The joke is that people will discuss wine pairings with more courage than they discuss where they like to be touched.

    Say it anyway.

Say it while you still have your coat options. Say it before his mouth makes the conversation theoretical. Say it like you say you do not want onions, or you do want the window open, or you are not staying if he puts that playlist on. Ordinary. Exact. A little smug, if smug is what keeps your voice from shrinking.

Clarity is hotter than guessing because guessing is lonely. Guessing puts you in the scene twice, once as the body and once as the manager. Talking early lets you be in it once. Present. Hungry. Able to notice whether the sex is actually good, which is the whole point of wanting it in the first place.

The clothes can leave after. They are patient. Sentences are not.

  • Stop Apologising For Wanting It

There is a particular tone some women get when they admit they want sex. It is half a laugh and half a flinch. Like they have been caught stealing something small and glittering. Like hunger needs a witness statement.

It is nonsense. And it is everywhere.

Wanting it is treated as a personality leak. Too keen. Too much. Too ready. A man can want the night out loud and look decisive. A woman can want the same night and look like she has dropped her dignity on the pavement. Same heat. Different paperwork.

High drive is not a character flaw. It is a temperature. Some people run hot. Some people need dinner, a plot, a feeling, three working days and a signed letter before the body even clocks in. Both are allowed. Only one of those gets asked to explain itself in the morning.

The sorry tour is optional. It is also usually boring.

You know the tour. The little jokes that shrink the want before anyone else can. I never do this. I do not usually. I am not like that. I just. The sentence starts brave and then trips over its own handbag. It is a pre-emptive apology for having a body that arrived on time.

It does not make you classier. It makes you quieter than you need to be.

There is a serious bit under the joke, and it is worth saying without a wink. A lot of girls are taught that being wanted is the prize and doing the wanting is the risk. Be desirable. Do not desire too visibly. Be game, but not hungry. Be sexual, but in a way that still looks accidental. As if good sex happened to you while you were busy being tasteful.

That training sticks. It sticks in the taxi. It sticks in the hallway. It sticks in the stupid little pause before you put a hand on him first. It sticks when the sex is good and you still feel the urge to make it sound like a one-off, a blip, a moment of weather rather than a decision.

A decision is hotter. It is also more honest.

Want the night. Say the night. Then judge the sex on quality, not on whether you can still pass as someone who could take it or leave it.

That last part matters. Liking sex is not the same as accepting rubbish sex. High drive gets used against people in a sly way, as if appetite means you should be grateful for whatever turns up. You wanted it, so this will do. You started it, so do not complain about the pacing. You have done this before, so you cannot have standards now.

Rubbish is still rubbish. A person can be easy to excite and hard to impress. Those two things live in the same body without contradiction. In fact they should. Taste is what stops hunger turning into a queue you cannot leave.

The double standard is not subtle. Call a man sexual and it sounds like a compliment with a smirk in it. Call a woman the same and somebody somewhere starts doing inventory. How many. How soon. How little she seemed to suffer about it. Easy is a word that pretends to be about numbers and is really about discomfort. Other people’s discomfort. The kind that needs a woman to look a bit conflicted before she is allowed to enjoy herself.

You can flinch at that word. Plenty do. You can also let it drop on the floor and keep walking. Reputation is just other people filling in forms about a life they are not paying for. They are not in the room. They are not the ones who have to live in the want, or the quiet after, or the particular relief of being in your own skin with someone who is actually paying attention.

There is humour in how clumsy the shame still is. Grown adults, jobs, rent, a whole adult life, and still that teenage reflex: do not look too pleased. Do not ask for the second round like you mean it. Do not text first. Do not say stay there, that, do not move. Do not be the one who turns the light back on and says that was not enough yet.

Not enough yet is a perfectly reasonable sentence. It only sounds reckless if you have been trained to treat your own appetite like a mess that needs mopping.

Men rarely do this to themselves in the same way. They will be awkward, sure. They will go quiet after they come. They will fumble the after. But they do not generally treat the wanting itself as a moral event. The want is assumed. The want is the point. The conversation starts after the fact, if it starts at all.

Women get the inquest before the night has even taken its coat off.

So here is the practical bit, because wanting without a spine just becomes another way to get talked over.

Say it in ordinary language. I want you to come over. I want this to happen. I want your mouth there. I want you to slow down. I want another hour. Ordinary words are underrated. They do not wobble like poetry and they do not hide like jokes. If someone cannot survive a clear sentence, he was never going to survive a clear night either.

Initiation is not unladylike. It is efficient. Waiting to be chosen can look elegant from a distance. Up close it is often just delay. The people who get decent sex on a regular basis are rarely the ones hoping the other person will guess correctly forever. Guesswork is romantic in films. In beds it produces a lot of near misses and a lot of polite noises.

And yes, polite noises. The little soundtrack that keeps a man thinking he is doing well while the actual point of the evening wanders off and dies on the duvet. Faking it is not kindness. It is admin. It files the night under fine when it was not fine. It trains the room to expect less. If you have a high drive, that is a particularly stupid habit, because you will be back in another room soon enough, still hungry, still hoping this one has more sense.

You are allowed to stop midway. Starting is not a contract. Heat is not a signature. If it turns grim, or careless, or strangely lonely even while the bodies are busy, you can say no thank you and find your jeans. Manners have ruined more nights than bluntness ever did.

You are allowed to want casual and still want effort. No relationship does not mean no presence. A condom is not a mood killer. A sentence afterwards is not a proposal. Water, a hand, one ugly honest line. That was good. Stay a minute. The bar is on the floor. If he trips over it, believe him.

There is a softer serious point here too. For some people, sex is not just sport. It is how the nervous system comes back into the room. It is contact. It is proof of being wanted without a speech. That can be healthy and it can also be a way of not sitting with anything else. Both can be true. A high drive does not make you shallow. It also does not make you exempt from noticing why you reach for it.

If the want is covering a hole, you will feel that in the morning whether you apologise or not. If the want is just the want, you will feel that too. The apology does not sort the difference. Honesty does.

The joke people make is that women who like sex are either damaged or performing. As if the only two settings are trauma and display. There is a third setting. It is called I like it. I like the heat and the mess and the particular intelligence of two people who are paying attention. I like being good at it. I like getting better at asking. I like leaving when it is dull. I like staying when it is not.

That is not a confession. It is a preference.

The culture loves a reformed appetite. The girl who used to, and now does not. The girl who learned better. The girl who got it out of her system, as if desire were a virus with a clear course. Nobody talks as fondly about the woman who did not get it out of her system because it was never a system. It was her. Temperature. Taste. A body that clocks on without needing a pep talk.

There will still be days when the old flinch shows up. You will hear yourself making the night smaller in the retelling. You will add a shrug you do not mean. You will say it was just one of those things, when it was actually a thing you chose, liked, and would choose again if the quality held.

Catch that shrug. It is the apology in casual clothes.

Wanting it will not make you simpler. People with appetite still get lonely. They still pick badly. They still stay too long in a bed that has nothing going on except friction and hope. Drive does not grant taste automatically. It just gives you more evenings in which to practise having some.

    So practise.

Want the night out loud. Do not decorate the sentence with shame. Let him rise to it or fail in good light. Judge the sex like you judge a meal. Hot plates are not enough. You are allowed to send it back. You are allowed to order again. You are allowed to go home and put the telly on and not turn the want into a story about what kind of woman that makes you.

It makes you a woman who likes sex and has noticed that some of it is excellent and some of it is a waste of a good Wednesday.

That is not a scandal. That is a standard.

The sorry tour can keep walking. You have somewhere better to be.

  • Make Him Watch You Come

The polite version is a very good actress. It knows when to breathe out. It knows which face to borrow. It knows how to keep the peace in a room where a man is trying, and trying is supposed to be enough, and enough is a word that has ruined more nights than outright selfishness ever did.

The useful version is less photogenic. It is a hand in the right place for longer than looks elegant. It is a small, unglamorous movement that would never make a trailer. It is the face a person actually makes when something is working, which is rarely the face they practised in case anyone was watching.

That is the point. Make him watch the useful version.

Not as a test. Not as a performance review with better lighting. As information. Men copy what they are shown. Show him the wrong film often enough and he will learn it by heart. He will become fluent in a version of you that was designed to protect his feelings and starve yours.

This is where the humour sits, because the situation is faintly absurd. Two adults, naked, supposedly after the same outcome, and one of them is still working from a manual the other one wrote in invisible ink. He is looking. He thinks he is looking. What he is looking at is the edited cut. Then he wonders, later, in that baffled male way, why the same moves do not land twice.

Of course they do not. He rehearsed the understudy.

There is a serious reason women do this, and it is not mystery or complexity or some poetic inability to know what they like. It is manners with a body attached. It is the old habit of making the room comfortable. He is keen. He is proud. He has that hopeful expression men get when they think they are close to being good at something. Interrupting feels cruel. Redirecting feels like criticism. Coming quietly, or almost, or not at all and making a noise anyway, feels like kindness.

It is not kindness. It is training.

Bodies are not mind readers. They are copycats with good intentions. If the thing that actually works is a slower grind against his thigh, and the thing he sees is back-arching theatre, he will keep offering theatre. If the thing that works is your own hand with his mouth somewhere less ambitious, and he never sees the hand, he will keep treating the hand like a last resort. If the thing that works is staying exactly still for twenty more seconds, and you move because stillness looks boring, he will learn that motion is the goal.

He cannot steal a method you will not put on the table.

Watching, here, does not mean turning the night into a show with an audience and a spotlight. It means letting the mechanics be visible. Eyes open. Body unhidden. Less folding in on yourself at the exact moment the information would be useful. If you need a hand, use the hand where he can see what it is doing. If you need pressure more than thrusting, take that pressure and do not apologise for how unspectacular it looks. If you need him lower, slower, quieter, put him there and let him clock the result.

The result is the teacher. Not the speech.

People get shy about this because coming is supposed to be private even when it is happening two inches from someone else’s mouth. There is a flinch in being seen wanting something specific. Specific is exposing. Specific says this is not generic pleasure, this is my particular wiring, please do not laugh at the circuit. So the polite version arrives to blur the details. A general moan. A general movement. A general finish that could belong to anyone.

General is how you end up with a man who is technically present and practically lost.

The funny part is how eager most of them are once the fog lifts. Not all. Some get sulky, because being shown a better method implies the old one was a bit rubbish, and rubbish is a word their ego files under attack. Those ones will tell on themselves quickly. A good look at that reaction is useful too. If he treats accurate information like an insult, the problem is not your timing.

The better ones go quiet in a different way. Concentrating quiet. The face of a man being handed the answer sheet. It is not glamorous. It is slightly comic. He looks like he is assembling a shelf and has just been told the leftover screw was load bearing. Then he tries again, closer to the actual instructions, and the night improves because reality was allowed in the room.

There is a practical way to do this that does not require a seminar.

Start before anyone is close. If you already know what tends to work, do not save it for the emergency ending. Bring it in while the mood is still generous. His hand over yours. Yours over his. A bit of, like this, held there, not as a lecture, as a demonstration. The body understands demonstration faster than it understands paragraphs.

If you come more easily from a toy, the toy belongs in the scene as a fact, not as a verdict on him. Let him see where you put it. Let him see the angle. Let him keep doing whatever he is doing that helps. Men get strange about toys when the toy appears like a substitute teacher after they have already failed the lesson. They get less strange when it is just part of the kit.

If you come more easily from your own hand, same rule. Do not smuggle it in under the duvet like contraband. He can hold you. He can kiss you. He can stay inside that closeness and still watch the part that works. A lot of them find that hotter than they expected, because wanting is contagious when it is obvious. What they cannot copy is the thing they were never allowed to observe.

Pace matters here more than invention. The useful version often looks repetitive. Same small movement. Same pressure. Same ugly little rhythm that would bore an audience and delight a nervous system. This is where men go wrong even when they are trying. They see repetition and assume the scene needs a twist. They add speed. They change angle. They introduce a move they saw somewhere else, as if variety were the same thing as skill.

If he is watching the real thing, he gets to see that the twist is the enemy. Stay. That one word does more than a speech about anatomy. Stay, and then let him see why.

There is a balance to strike with the face as well. You do not owe anyone a porn expression. You also do not have to hide in the pillow if hiding is how the details get lost. Looking at him is optional. Letting him look at you is the point. There is a difference. One is performance. The other is evidence.

Evidence is what changes the next time, and the time after that. One night of honesty is a good evening. Repeated honesty becomes a habit in him. He starts reaching for the thing that worked instead of the thing that looked like it should. That is how a sex life gets quietly better without anyone having to hold a meeting about it.

The serious cost of not doing this is not just missed orgasms, though that bill adds up. It is the slow training of both people. You get used to disappearing at the important moment. He gets used to guessing. The night becomes a polite negotiation with a fake ending, and then someone calls it fine, and fine is a miserable standard for something that is supposed to feel like heat and relief and a bit of filth.

There is also the lie that talking should be enough. Talking helps. Talking is how you get the toy out of the drawer without a drumroll. Talking is how you stop him mid-wrong-move before it becomes a theme. But a lot of useful sex information is physical. It lives in timing and pressure and the exact place a breath changes. He can hear “a bit higher” and still miss it by an inch. He is less likely to miss it if he sees the inch.

Does this feel vulnerable? Yes. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is the reason it works. You are letting another person see the unedited circuit. If the relationship, or the night, cannot survive that, it was already a thin arrangement. Better to find that out while someone is still paying attention.

The joke, if you need one to get through the first awkward attempt, is that men have been watching the wrong film for years and then calling themselves experienced. Experience in what? In a version of women who were trying not to cause offence. Of course the technique is weird. Of course the tempo is off. Of course he thinks the loud part is the important part. That is what the polite version taught him.

Show him the quieter mechanics. The hand that does not look cinematic. The grind that would never trend. The face that is busy with an actual sensation instead of an implied one. If he laughs in the cruel way, that is data. If he pays attention, that is the start of him being good rather than keen.

Keen is common. Good is copywork done from the right original.

Afterward, do not turn it into a debrief unless he asks or the night needs a single clear note. The demonstration already said it. Water. A hand. The ordinary after. Let the information sit in his body overnight. The ones worth keeping will come back to the useful version without being invited to a seminar.

The ones who preferred the actress will miss her. Let them. She was doing unpaid work.

Make him watch you come. Not because he is owed a show. Because he is standing there trying to learn a language and you keep mouthing a different one to be polite. Stop translating yourself into something easier to handle. Give him the actual sentence. Then see whether he can read.
