  • Have Sex Like You Have Taste

Taste is not a candle and a playlist. Taste is the quiet decision that this particular night, this particular mouth, this particular man, is worth the time it will take to get your clothes off and then put them back on again.

A lot of people treat sex like weather. It arrives. You endure it. You make the best of a damp afternoon. That is a miserable way to live in a body that actually likes sex. Wanting it often does not mean you have to accept whatever turns up looking keen. Hunger and standards can sit at the same table. They should.

Think about food for a second. Nobody with any sense praises a meal just because they were starving when it landed. You can be properly hungry and still know the chips are soggy. Sex works the same way, except people get strange and moral about it. High drive gets read as desperation. Selectiveness gets read as being difficult. So a lot of women end up performing gratitude for average hands and a man who kisses like he is trying to win a bet.

Have sex like you have taste. Meaning: notice. Meaning: choose. Meaning: if it is rubbish, it does not get a standing ovation just because it happened.

Start with the unglamorous bits, because those are the ones that decide the night before anyone is impressive.

Time of day matters. A man who is electric at midnight can be a damp sock at 7am. A Sunday afternoon can be filthy in a lazy way that a Friday after six drinks never quite manages. If you only ever have sex when you are half cut and half asleep, of course it feels like something that happens to you. You have scheduled it in the slot where your judgment is weakest. That is not chemistry. That is logistics wearing a disguise.

Lighting matters more than people admit. Pitch black is not automatically sexy. It is often just hiding. Overhead bulbs are a war crime. A lamp in the corner is enough. You should be able to see the person you are in bed with without feeling like you are being interviewed. If he insists on darkness because he is shy, fine, once. If he insists on darkness because he does not want to look at you looking at him, that is a different review.

    Then there is the mouth.

Kissing is the preview screen. If you do not like his mouth, the rest of the evening is an argument you are having with your own standards. Some men kiss as if volume is the same thing as wanting. Some go still, mouth open, waiting to be operated like a vending machine. Some are good in a way that makes the rest of the night feel already decided. You are allowed to care about that. You are allowed to think, I fancy him and I still do not want that tongue in my life for forty minutes.

Positions get treated like a catalogue you have to work through to prove you are not boring. That is homework energy. Taste looks more like this: what actually feels good on this body, with this person, tonight. If the thing that works is simple, stay there. If the thing he wants is a performance he saw on a screen, you can decline the role. Being bent into a shape that does nothing for you is not open mindedness. It is customer service.

The serious part sits underneath the jokes, and it is this. A lot of women were trained to be grateful for being wanted. The wanting was supposed to be the prize. So when the sex itself is careless, rushed, or oddly lonely, the brain does a little accounting trick. At least he chose me. At least it happened. At least I am not the girl who makes a fuss.

That accounting trick will rob you.

Sex you survive has a particular feeling. You are managing him. You are tracking his ego. You are making encouraging noises so the atmosphere does not collapse. You are waiting for a moment that keeps not arriving, then deciding the moment was probably close enough. You leave with the sense of having completed something. Not enjoyed it. Completed it.

Sex you choose feels different in the body before it is even good. There is a click. Yes. This. Now. The room can still be messy. He can still be imperfect. You can still laugh when something is awkward. The difference is that you are in it, not hosting it.

Taste is not the same as being precious. Precious is white sheets and a speech about connection. Taste can be filthy. Taste can be casual. Taste can be a weeknight and no overnight bag. The standard is not romance. The standard is that your actual pleasure is not an optional extra he might get round to if the main event leaves him with spare time.

This is where high drive gets people into trouble. If you want sex often, it is tempting to lower the bar so the wanting has somewhere to go. That works in the short term. Then you clock the pattern. The nights blur. The men blur. You start recognising the same three mistakes in different bathrooms. He goes too fast. He loses the plot the second he is inside. He treats your orgasm like a nice idea he will support in principle. You keep showing up because the alternative is sitting with the want and not spending it.

Spending it badly still spends it.

You do not need a manifesto in the doorway. You need a few private rules that sound almost boring when you say them out loud.

You like being touched before anyone is in a rush.
You like a mouth that pays attention.
You like being able to use your hand or a toy without a debate about whether that means he has failed.
You like a man who can stay on one pace when that pace is working.
You like a sentence afterwards, even a stupid one.
You do not like being crushed, ignored, or used as proof of how keen he is.

None of that makes you difficult. It makes you someone who has had sex enough times to know the difference between heat and a decent night.

The review happens whether you write it down or not. Your body keeps the notes. So you might as well be honest in the morning. Was he actually good, or was he available. Did you finish, or did you perform completion to keep the peace. Did you like the way he looked at you, or did you like the fact that somebody looked. Those are different scores.

Humour helps, because the alternative is turning into a person who lectures men in bed, and nobody wants to have sex with a TED Talk. You can laugh at the man who changes position every thirty seconds like he is clicking through channels. You can laugh at the one who asks if you came in the voice of someone checking you received a parcel. You can laugh at yourself, too, for staying that extra twenty minutes out of manners.

Then you still have to decide whether you will do it again.

    That decision is the taste.

If he is lazy and sunny about it, you do not owe him a training programme. Some men want to learn. You can tell those ones in the way they watch your face and adjust. Some men want applause. They hear a direction as an insult. You will waste a lot of good wanting on the second type if you keep mistaking potential for skill.

Things to try are simpler than the internet makes them.

Try having sex when you are awake. Properly awake. Not as a full stop after wine.

Try leaving a light on. Not an interrogation lamp. Enough to see whether he is in the room with you or performing at the wall.

Try kissing for longer than the job requires. If it stays good, the rest usually follows. If it dies, you have saved yourself a lot of choreography.

Try one position you actually like and refusing to upgrade it for his boredom. Boredom is his problem. Your nervous system is not a content platform.

Try saying the true thing in ordinary words. Left. Slower. Stay there. I do not like that. I do like that. People get shy and then hide inside dirty talk they do not even fancy. Plain language is not unsexy. It is how you get what you came for.

Try ending it when it turns grim. Starting is not a contract. You can stop in the middle and still have been allowed to start. The women who push through out of politeness are the ones who later say they do not know why they went off sex. They know. They just keep calling it a mystery.

There is a double standard humming under all of this and it is worth naming without building a shrine to it. A man who knows what he likes is experienced. A woman who knows what she likes is a lot of other words, most of them designed to make her smaller. Easy. Fussy. A lot. The trick they want is for you to want it and also not have opinions about the quality. Be available. Be pleasant. Be impressed.

    No.

You can like sex, have it, want it again tomorrow, and still think a particular night was mid. Those facts do not cancel each other. The people who need you to be ashamed are usually the ones who benefit from you accepting less.

Reputation is other people’s paperwork. Taste is yours. One of those will still be in the room when the door shuts.

The point is not to become so exacting that nobody qualifies and you turn desire into a job interview. The point is to stop treating your own pleasure like a side dish you did not order but might as well eat. You have a body that tells you things. Lighting. Timing. Mouth. Hands. Whether he stays after he comes or becomes a warm statue. Whether you leave feeling chosen or merely used efficiently.

Have the nights you actually want.

Leave the ones that are just something to be getting on with.

And when it is rubbish, give it the review it earned. Not a scene. Not a speech for the group chat, unless that is how you metabolise things. Just a private, accurate verdict. Not again. Or yes, again, but not like that. Or yes, exactly like that, tomorrow, with the lamp on, while you are still awake enough to know you chose it.

That is taste. It is not fancy. It is just refusing to survive what you could have selected.

  • Separate Heat From Hope

Heat is a body thing. Hope is a plot. That is the whole article, really, and most people still manage to staple them together in the dark like they came in the same packet. They do not. Fancying him at midnight is not a five year plan. It is not even a Tuesday plan. It is blood and skin and the particular stupidity that arrives when someone smells right and talks just well enough and puts a mouth on you like they have been thinking about it.

You can want that. You can have that. You can also clock, in the same hour, that he is unavailable, a bit boring once the lights are less kind, or already halfway out the door in his head. Both things can sit together. The trouble starts when one of them gets dressed up as the other.

High drive makes the mix up easier. Wanting is loud. It fills the room. It makes a decent jawline look like character and a half decent text look like devotion. The body does not care that he answered in one word all week. The body cares that he is here now, warm, interested, and briefly fluent. Hope hears that fluency and starts building furniture.

It is funny until you catch yourself doing it. One good hour and the brain is already assigning him a mug in the cupboard. He remembered a detail. He laughed at the right time. He was filthy in a way that felt specific rather than copied. Suddenly he is not a night. He is a possibility. That leap is so common it should have its own warning label. Chemistry is not a character reference.

The serious version is this. A lot of women are taught that wanting sex needs a story attached or it looks cheap. So the mind supplies one. He must like you. He must be shy in daylight. He must be complicated, which is the glamorous word for inconsistent. The story protects the appetite. It makes the night look like an investment instead of a choice.

You do not owe anyone that story.

You can like the sex and still see the man. Those are different skills. One is appetite. The other is taste. Appetite says yes. Taste keeps notes. Taste notices that he only becomes present when he is hard. Taste notices that his conversation before the bedroom was thin, and after it was a monastery. Taste notices that unavailable is not mysterious. It is a schedule he already gave you, just not in words.

Unavailable looks like this. He wants the heat and flinches at the calendar. He can do late. He cannot do ordinary. He will stay the night if the night is already happening and vanish when the night would have to become a plan. He is warm in fragments. He is absent in daylight. Hope hears the warmth and ignores the timetable. Heat does not need a timetable. That is why it keeps getting hired as a witness for the defence.

Boring is less cinematic and more common. The sex can still be good. Bodies are allowed to work when personalities do not. Then morning comes and he has nothing to say that was not already said with his hands. No curiosity. No bite. No extra room in him. Just a nice enough man who became interesting because he was close. That is not a crime. It is also not a future. The joke is how quickly heat can rent a personality for the evening and then the lease expires with the sunrise.

Gone by morning is the cleanest version and still people argue with it. He was sweet. He was intense. He said stay. He just did not mean stay into the part of the day that includes breakfast and opinions and the slightly less flattering light of a kitchen. Some men are only brave in the dark. That is not a tragedy. It is a category. Put him in it and stop promoting him.

The humour is that none of this is subtle. He tells you with his timing. He tells you with the way he goes quiet after he comes. He tells you with the three day gap, the half plan, the compliment that never becomes a question about your actual life. Heat translates all of that into chemistry. Hope translates it into potential. Neither translation is honest.

Honest looks blunter. I want him tonight. I do not trust him with tomorrow. I like how he kisses and I do not like how small my life becomes when I wait for him to text. I can want his mouth and still admit he is a bit dull when he has clothes on. That sentence feels disloyal the first time you say it. It is not. It is adult.

There is a serious cost to refusing it. You start granting extras to men who have only paid for the night. You soften your standards because the sex was convincing. You replay a good hour until it looks like evidence. You stay longer than the night deserved because leaving would mean admitting the heat was the best part and the best part was not enough. That is how high drive turns into self betrayal. Not because wanting is wrong. Because wanting gets used as glue.

Shame sits next to this, obviously. Be called easy and the temptation is to prove it was never just sex. Look, there were feelings. Look, it could have been something. Look, I am not the woman who wanted a body and had one. The double standard loves that panic. It would rather you decorate the night than own it. Owning it is simpler and less popular. I wanted him. I had him. I still have eyes.

You can practise the split in small ways.

Before anything happens, ask what you actually know. Not what you hope the heat will reveal. What you know. How he treats time. How he talks about other people. Whether he can stay in a conversation that is not heading toward a bed. If the file is thin, do not let the night thicken it for you.

During, stay in the room you are actually in. The room is skin, pace, whether he listens, whether he is generous, whether he disappears into his own ending and takes the personality with him. That is data. It is also allowed to be hot. Good sex does not have to be a character reference to be good.

After, do the unromantic audit while the kettle boils. Did he stay present. Did he ask a real question. Did the morning make him smaller or clearer. If you feel the urge to write him a better personality than the one he brought, that is hope clocking in for an unpaid shift. Send it home.

None of this means becoming cold. Cold is just hope wearing a different coat. You can be filthy and clear at the same time. You can text first, pull him in, have the night, and still not promote him to a man who gets your patience on tap. Appetite without fantasy is not grim. It is clean. It leaves you with the sex you wanted and the morning you can live with.

The confusing part is that heat feels like meaning. It has the same temperature as closeness. Your brain, traitor that it is, loves a shortcut. If the body opened, the story must be opening too. That shortcut is how people end up half in love with a man who cannot make a Wednesday. It is also how people talk themselves out of sex they would have enjoyed because they cannot find a future in it fast enough. Both errors come from the same fusion. Heat and hope glued together so hard that one cannot move without the other.

Separate them and the options get wider. You can have the hot, limited night without turning it into a wound. You can walk away from impressive chemistry when the man attached to it is unavailable in that boring, repetitive way. You can admit a man was good with his hands and still not very interesting. You can want more sex and still refuse the story that every spark is a seed.

There will be nights when the split is harder. He will say something almost soft. He will look at you like the dark has made him honest. He will hold on after he comes instead of becoming furniture. That is allowed to land. It is also allowed to be one night of good behaviour. Do not let a single gentle hour overwrite a pattern. Patterns are the adult language. Moments are the sales pitch.

If you need a practical test, use the morning. Not because mornings are morally superior. Because they are less decorated. In the morning he has to be a person without the soundtrack. Does he meet your eye. Does he know what to do with quiet. Does he want you in a way that survives daylight. If the answer is no, you did not imagine the heat. You imagined the sequel.

People love to pretend this is bitterness. It is not. Bitterness is what you get when you keep hiring heat as a planner. Clarity is when you let heat do the job it is good at, which is making a night feel alive, and let hope work for people who have earned a place in the daytime.

You are allowed to like sex. You are allowed to be good at it. You are allowed to want another round and still clock that he is not a life. Those facts can share a bed without getting married.

Want the night. See the man. Keep the difference.

  • Own Being Called Easy

The word arrives like a receipt someone else printed.  Easy. Slung across a pub table. Dropped in a group chat that was supposed to be about something else. Said with a laugh so the speaker can pretend it was nothing. It is never nothing. It is a filing system. It is how certain people keep score of a woman’s appetite without admitting they are keeping score.

Wanting sex and having it will get you that label faster than almost anything. Not cruelty. Not carelessness. Wanting. The wanting is the offence. The sex is just the evidence.

Here is the part that needs saying without a joke first. A reputation is other people’s paperwork. It is not a medical record. It is not a moral exam you sat and failed. It is a story assembled by people who were not in the room, or were in the room and still missed the point. It does not confer ownership. It does not give anyone rights to your nights, your body, or a running commentary on how those nights should look.

You can be called easy and still have taste. Those two facts can sit in the same person without cancelling each other out.

The humour, because there is humour in it if you refuse to kneel, is how seriously some people take the ledger. They will forgive a man a messy decade and call it growing up. They will watch a woman enjoy herself twice in the same month and start drafting a personality. He is experienced. She is a warning label. He got it out of his system. She is the system.

It would be funnier if it were less efficient. The word does a lot of work in four letters. It means you said yes. It means you said yes more than once. It means you said yes without making the yes look like an accident. God forbid the desire looked like it belonged to you.

People love a woman who has sex if she looks faintly surprised about it. Reluctant is romantic. Hungry is a problem. Hungry and cheerful is a scandal. Hungry, cheerful, and picky is apparently too many personality traits for one body.

That is the trick they never admit. Easy is not really about volume. It is about tone. A woman who treats sex like something she is allowed to want, choose, and review is harder to manage than a woman who treats it like a favour she got talked into. The first one has standards. The second one can be flattered into worse decisions. Guess which one gets called difficult when she leaves, and easy when she stays.

There is a serious cost to swallowing the word. You start editing the night before it happens. You stay with sex that is lazy because leaving would confirm the story. You laugh off the man who goes quiet after he comes because asking for a sentence would sound demanding, and demanding on top of willing is apparently greedy. You perform a little shame as insurance. Just enough apology to keep the room comfortable.

That insurance is a con. The room was never going to be comfortable. Some people need a woman to be slightly sorry about her own heat. If you refuse, they will invent the sorry for you and call it your reputation.

    So do not buy it.

Casual sex without an apology tour is not a character collapse. It is an adult arrangement. Two people want a night. They have it. They either stay decent or they do not. The decent part is the standard. The number of nights is bookkeeping.

Taste is how you keep the whole thing from turning into sludge. Easy, as an insult, pretends you will take anything. That is the smear. Meet it with the opposite. Want the sex. Notice when it is rubbish. Leave when it is rubbish. Ask for the pace. Keep the clit in the plot. Require a condom like you require keys. Want him to stay in the room after, not because you are building a marriage on a Tuesday, but because vanishing the second he finishes is grim manners.

High drive does not mean low standards. That sentence should be on a tote bag and also carved into a few headboards.

The double standard is older than anyone currently using it. Men get a biography. Women get a rumour. He is praised for appetite as if appetite were a sport. She is advised to keep hers quiet, then blamed for being cold when she does, then blamed for being easy when she does not. There is no winning version of this game because the game is not designed for you to win. It is designed to keep female desire looking like a problem that needs supervision.

You do not have to supervise yourself for them.

That does not mean being careless with other people. It does not mean treating bodies like free samples. Consent is still the floor. Kindness is still available. You can like sex a lot and still be the person who checks in, who hears a no, who does not turn a warm room into a negotiation. Wanting is not a free pass to be sloppy. It is a reason to be precise.

The serious version of owning the word is this. You stop using other people’s anxiety as a mirror. You stop letting a nickname do your thinking. You look at the actual night. Was it wanted. Was it honest. Was it good. Did anyone get treated like public property. If the answers are clean, the gossip can sit in the corridor and wait.

The funny version is watching how quickly the story changes depending on who is telling it. Sleep with someone once and you are mysterious. Sleep with him again and you are keen. Sleep with someone else and you are a pattern. Sleep with nobody for a bit and you are healing, which is a polite way of saying the audience would like a quieter season. You cannot win an audience that thinks your body is communal television.

Let them talk. They will talk anyway. Silence has never protected a woman from a story. Good behaviour has never retired the ledger. The people who use easy as a weapon are rarely talking about ethics. They are talking about discomfort. Your freedom made their categories look small.

There is a particular Essex flavour to this, though it happens everywhere. Class gets in the mix. Be too blunt about wanting something and you are common. Be too polished and you are calculating. Speak plainly about sex and someone decides you have no mystery, as if mystery were a moral achievement and not just good lighting. You can be well spoken and still get filed under easy because you did not wrap the wanting in lace.

    Fine. Lace is optional.

What is not optional is the distinction between being available and being indiscriminate. Available means you can want a night and say so. Indiscriminate means you outsource your taste to whoever is standing nearest. Those are different women. Sometimes they are even different nights in the same woman, which is allowed, because people are not brands. The insult collapses them on purpose. Do not help it.

If someone calls you easy to your face, you do not owe a thesis. You can laugh. You can say that is one word for it. You can ask whether they are bored. Humour works here because the accusation wants heat. It wants you flustered, explaining, listing the men, proving you have standards like you are applying for a visa. Refuse the interview.

If it comes from a man you have actually slept with, that is a different weather system. A man who enjoyed the yes and then uses the yes against you is telling you what the night was for. It was for him. Your wanting was convenient until it made you look free. You can file that under useful information and not under self improvement.

Friends can be worse, in a quieter way. The raised eyebrow. The joke that is not a joke. The concern that sounds like care and feels like management. I just worry about how it looks. It looks like a life. That is how it looks.

You are allowed to want more than one night with more than one person and still be loyal where loyalty was agreed. You are allowed to like filthy, straightforward, unromantic sex and still want a hand in your hair after. You are allowed to be good at it and not pretend you wandered in by accident. Competence in bed is not a confession.

The apology tour is what happens when a woman tries to pay rent on her own reputation. She explains the context. She mentions she was drunk, or sad, or it did not mean anything, or she does not usually. She makes the desire smaller so other people can stand it. The rent never ends. Pay once and they will invoice you again.

    Stop paying.

Keep the nights that were good. Keep the standards that made them good. Keep the right to want another one tomorrow without issuing a press release. Easy, if it means you do not treat your own desire like a stain, is just a rude word for unashamed. Let it be rude. You do not have to become polite in return.

There will still be moments that sting. Anyone who says otherwise is selling a posture. A word can land even when you know it is rubbish. The work is not becoming numb. The work is not handing the word the keys. Feel it. Then go home, put the kettle on, and remember that paperwork filed by strangers has no authority in your flat.

Wanting sex is a personality trait in the same way wanting money or wanting a quieter life is a personality trait. It shapes how you move. It does not make you public. It does not make you owed. It does not make you less entitled to care, or to leaving, or to saying that was rubbish and I would like something better.

Own the nights. Own the appetite. Own the fact that some people will need a smaller woman than the one you actually are.

    Let them talk.

    Keep your taste.

    Keep your nights.
